PATTAYA CITY EXPATS CLUB NEWSLETTER March 9, 2012

This Sunday’s Meeting Program

We will be welcoming

back Peter Marsh from

Black Star Jewelry. He

previously spoke to us

a couple of years ago

about the mythical

powers of gemstones

and brought along

some young ladies to model a few of their

creations.

Peter says this time he will speak about

Sapphires and Rubies such as those that are

available in Thailand, and how to avoid fraud.

However, instead of his models he will be

bringing along some other “little gems” to

entertain us. When Peter accepted our

invitation to speak, he had this to say about

their sponsorship of K C Dance Studio:

Black Star Jewelry is now sponsoring the

Thai Dance Studio called KC Dance Studio,

which is for Thai children between 3 and 8

years mainly. The KC Dance Studio wants

to be the number one dance school in

Thailand and they are entered for the

‘Thailand’s got Talent’ competition later in

February. This is an entertainment

competition open to all talents and ages.

We are entering a team of dancers for it.

Black Star wants to help them achieve their

aims of success in being the number one

school in children’s dancing, Thai dance

and ballet, hip hop and others. They are

already very good and have won many

awards and accolades over the years.

Well, they did compete in the “Thailand‟s got

Talent” and the Pattaya Mail had the following

report on the results:

A troupe of 7 to 9 year old children

from the K.C. Dance Studio based in

Pattaya were voted the most popular

winners in the All Thailand dance

finales held in Bangkok at the end of

last month.

So, plan to attend Sunday‟s meeting to learn

how to avoid fraud in purchasing rubies and

sapphires; then sit back and enjoy the K C

Dance Studio‟s “little gems” as they

demonstrate their dance techniques for your

enjoyment.

We will have the usual announcements of

upcoming events in and around Pattaya,

updates on club activities, and last, but not the

least, there will be an Open Forum, which is the

time for you to ask questions about living in

Thailand, or Pattaya. We ask you to offer your

own observations and suggestions on how to

live better in Pattaya. Your humorous stories

(jokes) are welcome, but remember you are in

mixed company. Whether you are a new Expat,

just visiting on holiday, or consider yourself an

"old hand" at being an Expat in Thailand, you

will find the Open Forum has humor and

helpful information to offer.

Arrangements Lyndy Eggleston are being

handled by the Pattaya Ladies International

Club. Services are being planned for March 16,

2012; but the Wat has not yet been selected.

Lyndy‟s sister will be arriving on Monday and

more information should be known shortly

thereafter.

We should have more information on the

arrangements in the next Newseltter, which

most will receive the evening of March 15.

PATTAYA CITY EXPATS CLUB NEWSLETTER March 9, 2012

Last Week’s Meeting

Freedom was the expression used by last

Sunday‟s speaker, Mo Tajani to describe the

primary difference for an author between print

publishing and digital publishing. Master of

Ceremonies Richard Silverberg introduced Mo

noting that has authored several books about his

travels and experiences. Currently, he lives in

Chiang Mai where he continues to write.

Mo said that he would begin by reading from the

prologue of his earlier book, “A Chameleon‟s

Tale,” which briefly describes his life as a global

refugee after having been kicked out of Uganda

in 1972 where he had lived for 18 years. He was

born in Tanzania to Indian parents and moved to

Uganda at the age of two. As a refugee, he first

fled to England and then to America of the late

sixties and early seventies. Fluent in eight

languages, he has spent twenty years working in

refugee camps in Asia, training rural farmers in

Central America, educating First Nation tribes in

Canada, and coordinating poverty reduction

projects in Africa.

After reading the prologue, Mo started his main

theme by explaining some of the restrictions that

publishing in print media has. The publishers

have a monopoly, you are at their mercy. They

decide on what they will print, usually only

reading the first 10 or so pages as a basis for

their initial decision. This decision is based on

marketability rather than quality. Will it sell?

What market will it sell in? How much will

someone pay? Also, the printed book has to fit in

their particular niche. For example, his “A

Chameleon‟s Tale” was a memoir about his

travels. The publisher wanted to know, was it a

travel book or was it a memoir? They had to fit it

in one or the other niche.

However, things have changed with the advent

of the Internet and the ability to publish a book

in digital format; known as eBooks. He

explained that with an eBook, you have total

control. It is the author who decides on content,

illustrations, photographs, book cover, and more.

He decided to publish his latest book, “Global

Crossroads,” as an eBook. Currently it is

available only on Amazon for their Kindle

reader, but since there are many websites for

Internet eBooks, he may decide to also publish it

for their formats. Mo briefly explained the

process and how it differed from publishing a

book in print. Although he had complete

control, he said there were two others that he

could not do without. One is an editor. You do

need someone that can read what you have

written and make suggested changes. The other

is a “technical” guru, someone that knows the

how to put an eBook together and make all the

parts work. Another great feature is the ability to

market the eBook to different audiences. For

example, Amazon has several categories and you

can list your book in many of them. They also

have certain tags that you can attach so that your

book will appear for certain “search” terms that

the prospective reader may use. Mo also pointed

out that an author spends months and maybe

years writing their book for which the print

publisher will set the price and pay them 10% as

their share. Whereas, with Amazon, he sets the

price and receives 70% of the amount paid.

Mo said that you can do so much more if the

book is in digital format. In his book, he has

embedded two video clips and about 50

photographs. He has also included audio

interviews with himself, the author, at the end of

each of the 10 stories included in the book. He

also pointed out that in the digital world of the

Internet, you the reader also have certain

advantages. You can adjust the font size and

type on your “reader.” When you see a book you

want, you can purchase it without leaving your

home and it downloads and is available within

minutes. Mo concluded by reading some of the

prologue from “Global Crossroads.” He then

answered several questions from the audience.

Richard Silverberg called on Al Serrato to

conduct the Open Forum, where questions are

asked and answered about expat living in

Thailand. Return to Contents

frames around, please bring them to the meeting, give them to Richard Smith. On Dave's latest visit,
