Please plan on leaving for school about 15 minutes earlier to get to school on time. There are road closures, trains, and delays from time to time all over the valley for different reasons. This is not so fun, but it does happen. We have teachers, staff, and families traveling from the west, north, and south to come to school. We are not able to start school later because people come from all over to attend Wasatch Peak. These are amazing scholars and we are so happy to have them in our school showing others what kindness looks like. Patriot Trait for November: BE PROACTIVE Our Patriot Trait for November is Be Proactive. We are starting to focus on The Leader In Me character traits. Being Proactive means thinking or acting ahead of anticipated events. Proactive people have a plan. They reflect on what they are doing and what they need to do to be successful. Proactive people meet deadlines, do their homework, turn in their homework, take responsibility for their actions rather than blaming others, and are great problem solvers. We are trying to create a culture of proactivity at school. We want our scholars to learn to be thinkers, problem-preventers, problem solvers, and people who take the initiative rather than waiting for others. PATRIOT CARE WEEKNovember 26 This week, Mrs. Beveridge has a special week planned. We are having our first annual Patriot CARE week. C.A.R.E. stands for making good CHOICES, having a positive ATTITUDE, and showing RESPECT for peers and adults, EVERY day. Each day, there will be activities that we will all be working on in homeroom to help remind us to CARE. Monday: CARE Assembly for each grade level, Tuesday: Be Proactive Daymaking good choices, Wednesday: Attitude of Gratitude, Thursday: Secret Service Day, Friday: Teacher and Staff Appreciation Day. We are excited about this great week to begin our month of November and our Leader in Me character traits. Remember to ask your child what s/he is learning this week!

PATRIOT CARE WEEK—November 2—6

This week, Mrs. The Weather is Changing! Since the weather is changing, this means a few things:

1. DRESS UP MONDAYS: girls may wear tights under their skirts/skorts, or wear long pants-(navy). Boys may wear navy vest sweaters over a white-collared shirt. Anyone may wear a white collared shirt under a navy, long-sleeved crew-neck or V-neck sweater.

2. BEFORE SCHOOL: Since the weather is turning colder, scholars who arrive at school before 7:50 will be waiting in the GYM rather than outside. They can read a book OR play a card game. They may NOT run around because there are people eating breakfast and we do not want chaos. If your child is not having breakfast, they should not arrive at school until 7:45-ish. Only breakfast students should be here at 7:30.

3. COATS and JACKETS need to be MARKED with students’ names. If you are missing a jacket or a sweater or a coat, we have given the lost and found items away. We DID keep the Red, White, and Blue sweaters/jackets, etc. and they will be cleaned and put in the PTO buckets with extra clothes. PLEASE put your names in jackets and coats. We give the scholars so many chances to look for their things, but they don’t seem to recognize their own clothes.

4. LEAVE HOME EARLIER for school on snowy days. Double your driving time. We will always let you know if there are school closures due to really snowy weather on the website SCROLLER at the top of the website. Watch for the latest updates on our website. Thanks for staying informed! November is a wonderful month to count our blessings. Let’s all try and think of things daily we are grateful for! Have a fabulous week! Mrs. Swan

Engaging Readers Each week, we will share some information, inspiration, or tips on how to help your children ENGAGE in reading!

What is Oral Reading Fluency?

Reading fluency is the ability to read quickly, correctly and smoothly. It means that a child can recognize and decode words accurately and automatically and understand the words as they are being read. Children who do not read fluently (slow and/or choppy readers) have to work so hard on the mechanics of reading that there’s no mental energy left to think about the meaning of what they are reading.

How do I know if my child is reading fluently?

A simple way to know if your child is reading fluently is to listen to him/her read grade level text aloud. Have your child read a paragraph from their social studies, science, or reading book. As your child reads, consider the following:

How many words do they struggle with?

How easily can they sound out an unknown word?

Are they reading with expression? (for example, pausing at commas, periods, etc.)

Can they retell the story or summarize what the paragraph/story was about?

In order to screen for possible reading difficulties, Wasatch Peak Academy has assessed all students’ oral reading fluency skills in grades 1—3. Your child has been asked to read a grade level passage for one minute. Then, the assessor calculated the “words correct per minute” (wcpm). Children who have strong word recognition skills and can quickly use word attack strategies when coming upon an unknown word are able to read grade level text at an appropriate rate for that grade.

The most important thing is to KEEP READING Michelle Roderick. M.Ed. Reading Specialist/Title I Director Wasatch Peak Academy

Hello WPA Families! Our fifth graders are awesome and came up with a great theme for the Veteran’s 5K, 'What Veterans Did Yesterday, Gives us a Tomorrow!' The recipient of funds that the fifth graders chose is Continue Mission. Continue Mission is a local 501(c)(3), non-profit organization, serving Veterans with service connected physical, mental, and emotional injuries. We need many volunteers to help along the route (directing runners, cheering them on, passing out water, etc.) during the Veteran's 5K run on November 14. Volunteers would need to arrive by 7:45 and would need to stay until the last runner finishes. This is the perfect opportunity to get volunteer hours if you are unable to volunteer during the school day, not to mention...it's lots of fun! The link below is for volunteer sign up: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0e44aaa82caafd0-Veterans

Service

Learning

The Service Learning Committee is looking for a few more

parent volunteers. We need a couple of parents to help serve

as liaisons for a grade level. In addition, we need a PR person.

This would be someone who can write and submit press

releases before and after certain events. We also need

someone that is familiar with local organizations, so that we

can develop our connections to the community. Lastly, we need

someone who can research and write grants for service

learning. Helping in any of these capacities will have a

significant impact on your students' educations and CAN BE

DONE FROM HOME! Please contact Amy Hughes

[email protected] or 801-699-5167 or Cami Hamblin

[email protected] or 801-936-3066 if you have any

questions or feel like this would be a fit for you! THANKS!!!

The 5th grade is working hard to prepare for the

upcoming Veteran’s 5K Race which is sponsored by

WPA each year in the Fall. We are making posters

and flyers to advertise the race which will be held on

November 14th this year. Various students are also

writing an article for the paper to let the community

know about it and how they can participate. Other

students are coming up with a slogan for the race

and some are designing a logo. Proceeds from this

race will be contributed to a Veteran’s organization

called Continue Mission.

So a call-out to all of the wonderful parents and

students of WPA to plan on participating in this event

and even better, to invite someone to come with you

and support us in this very worthwhile cause that has

become a proud tradition at Wasatch Peak

Academy.

Quotes from our patriots “People get together from the neighborhood even if they do

not go to this school. It made me very happy to see so many

people honor Veterans. It took a lot of time and hard work, but

it was worth it!”

–Smith Alley (Student Body President at WPA)

“It’s a fundraiser for the Veterans and helps them through their

hard times.”

–Truman Harris, 5th Grade

“The Veterans’ 5K helps represent and support veterans.”

—Luke Ackerlow, 5th Grade
