PATRIOT NEWS December 14, 2016

Dear Parents, We love the Holiday Season! It seems to bring out the best in people. We so appreciate all of the wonderful “elves” who are in our school decorating the building, teachers’ doors, reading with our students, helping kids learn their times tables, bringing the faculty treats, and showing kindness in many ways. Thank you very much!! We notice all you do for our wonderful school and community. We also welcome Mark Clifford and Juan Arce-Larreta as new Board Members! They love our school and will continue to be helpful to our school community. We do need one or two parents to serve on our Trustlands Committee. If you are interested in serving, please email Mrs. Swan. There is so much learning going on in the classrooms these days. I am loving the in-depth research projects happening in several grade level classrooms. I love watching the scholars, in teams, present their knowledge to their peers. It’s wonderful to see our teachers working so much this year to make learning visible. This means that you can really SEE what your child is learning and better yet, so can they! The scholars are learning what success looks like each day so they can strive for that goal. We have a wonderful and devoted staff of teachers and paraprofessionals. They light up our WPA world with goodness! Speaking of goodness. . . We have loved having Mrs. Turck fill in for Mrs. Curtis while she has been on maternity leave. Mrs. Turck jumped in with both feet and has done a wonderful job in second grade. She will be missed. We love you Mrs. Turck. Mrs. Curtis will return in January. Next week, we hope you will all join us for our Christmas Sing-Around on Tuesday, December 20 at 1:00 in the gym. (Miss Sano has the Kindergarten schedule.) Listening to children sing really puts us all in the Christmas spirit. Mr. Wall has some great things planned this year. Next Wednesday, December 21, is our last day before the break. This is an EARLY OUT day! Scholars may wear clean pajamas on this day. (If they slept in them the night before, they’re not clean.) If your child does not want to wear pajamas, they may wear casual dress clothes. School resumes again on Tuesday, January 3, 2017. January will be our JANUARY JUMPSTART READING MONTH because the school play is in March. Mrs. Peterson has included the information in this week’s issue. We will have some great prizes for the scholars and the classes who read the most during the month of January. Literacy Night will be on Thursday, January 26. No matter what, the more your read, the smarter you get. It’s a fact! We wish you a happy, memorable, and safe Holiday Season. May your home be filled with love, light, yummy treats, good friends, family, and of course…. lots of fabulous books! J

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Mrs. Swan

It may be cold outside, but it’s time

to start getting warmed up for

January Jumpstart into Reading!

(This replaces our March Madness

Reading contest.)

Get that reading wish list ready and maybe even ask Santa for a

few new books to read! Were going to get our brains in shape!

Handouts with more details will be distributed in library this

week. The contest will start on January 1st during our Winter

Break, so be sure to keep your reading tracker in a safe place

until then! Students will be given only one copy at school. If it

gets lost, you may print out another copy from here.

Remember to turn in your minutes no matter what they are!

Even if you don’t read enough to

earn a reward, your minutes still

count toward your classroom

total. Every minute counts!

Let’s get smart!

Every day keep track of how many minutes you read at home, whether by yourself or

aloud with a family member! You can read picture books, fiction, non-fiction, magazines,

newspapers—anything!

The contest will start on January 1st and forms are due on February 1. Please tally up your

minutes and turn the form in to the library.

Hard Work Pays Off with Reading Contest Prizes:

500 minutes (20 minutes every day!) You’ll receive

a special bookmark and permission to check out an extra

book from the library each week until the end of the year.

1500 minutes (60 minutes every day!) You’ll

receive a $5 gift certificate to use at the Book Fair in

February and permission to check out an extra book from

the library each week until the end of the year!

If your literacy class achieves 15,000 minutes together, your class will receive a class

set of one novel!

Top THREE readers in EACH grade –

You’ll attend a special Reading Party in the library with books, popcorn, and fun!
