1. French and Indian War (1754 to 1763) took place in the colonies between England and France for control of America. Many Native Americans helped the French in the war.After the British won, they had lost a lot of money so they decided to tax the colonists to make money to pay for the war.

6. Boston Tea Party was an act of rebellion by the colonist on December 16, 1773 against the tea tax to encourage others to join the battle against England.

Sons of Liberty members disguised themselves as Native Americans and dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor.

2. First Continental Congress took place in 1774 in Philadelphia. The purpose was to discuss the problems the colonies were having with England.3. Second Continental Congress took place in 1775 in Philadelphia. The purpose was to discuss breaking away from England and becoming an independent nation.

5. Tyranny is a very cruel and unfair use of power.

4. Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson and his committee as a way for the colonists to respond to the tyranny andabuse of power by England’sKing George III. The document was a statement that the colonies wanted to be free and rule themselves. They felt they had been denied the basic right of freedom.

6. Lexington and Concord was the first armed battle in the American Revolution. It took place in Massachusetts on April 19, 1775. The Americans hid in the woods and behind stone fences while England returned to the hills outside Charlestown.

The British won the battle in Lexington and the Americans won the battle in Concord. The British troops were sent to find a storehouse of weapons that the colonists had gathered. But the Massachusetts militia, known as the Minutemen, were ready!

7. Battle of Saratoga was the turning point of the Revolution in October 1777. The American troops defeated the British in New York. This victory convinced the French to help the colonies fight against England. The geography of Saratoga affected the outcome of the battle. The terrain and weather caused problems for the British where the Americans used the terrain to their advantage.

8. Yorktown was the last battle where the Continental Army defeated British troops. On October 19, 1781 in Yorktown, Virginia England’s Lord Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington.

The Americans and French used the location of the British camp against them. They surrounded Yorktown to cut off the British to lead to the surrender.

1. Natural Rights were listed in the Declaration of Independence that belong to every human being. They are “unalienable”, which means they are part of our nature.

3. Right to Liberty is a natural right where every person has the right to be free.

5. Preamble is the part of the constitution that sets forth the goals and purposes to be served by the government. The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States begins, “We the people”, which establishes that the power of the government comes from the people.

6. Popular Sovereignty is the concept that political power belongs to the people. “We the people” establishes popular sovereignty.

This means that people give permission before the government makes laws that the people have to live by.
