Curriculum Vitae of Patricia Gerber 3

• Recipient of multiple awards for teaching. In 2011 I received the UBC Killam Teaching Prize, UBC’s highest honor in teaching.

• Director, Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Graduate Program (Jul 2015 – Present). o I am responsible for all aspects of the Program including its curriculum and pedagogical

approaches, the teaching and learning therein, supporting and mentoring students, providing support and guidance to 10 course coordinators as well as a large community of clinical preceptors, student performance, and program budget. https://www.gradpharmd.pharmsci.ubc.ca/

• Program Development Co-Leader: one of 3 members of the Leadership Team for the creation, development, and implementation of all curricular aspects of the new Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Program which launched in September 2015. The Entry-to-Practice (PharmD) Program replaced the bachelor’s degree program as the entry-to-practice program for pharmacists in British Columbia. This is the most significant change in Pharmacy training in 50 years. As part of the Leadership Team, I contributed significantly to the following aspects of the Program: (2012 – 2015)

o Program’s Task Force and 2 of the 9 program development working groups;

o Design of 24 new courses within an innovative competency-based curriculum, comprised of multidisciplinary integrated curricular structures.

o Building of an innovative series of 5 Medication Management courses involving 17 modified body-systems medication management patient care modules which integrate disciplinary elements required to competently manage patients with variety of medical conditions.

o Building of an Integration Activities component of the program, as a place for hands-on activities with “spiraling” content across the 4 years.

o Writing syllabi for new courses for the program approval process and for inclusion in the UBC Calendar.

o Designing new roles for faculty and staff to support the program (instructors, learning design analyst, project manager, program assistants).

o Appointing faculty to new curricular leadership roles, supporting the development of their course design and content, eencouraging and guiding faculty as they assumed new roles.

o Developing and leading faculty development workshops on integration of clinical skills with the basic pharmaceutical sciences, as well as the Cognitive Model as it applied to the various courses.

• Co-designer (2012 – 2015) and Co-coordinator (2016 – Present) of an innovative Medication Management course series comprised of 17 modified body-systems patient care modules which integrate disciplinary elements required to competently manage patients with variety of medical conditions. This is the largest (total 75 credits), most complex (in structure and faculty/personnel involvement), most significant (comprises 75% of the PharmD curriculum) course series ever designed, developed, and implemented in our Faculty.

• Curriculum Lead: Professionalism, Advocacy, Leadership, and Mentoring for the Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy Program, which launched in September 2015. (April 2015-Present)

o Responsible for developing and implementing curriculum in these areas spanning all 4 years of the program. For specific scholarly, curricular innovations and accomplishments, refer to the Innovations sections of my CV and my Teaching Dossier

• Program Development Leader: led the design, development and implementation of a Faculty-Student Engagement Program (2015 – Present) and co-led the design, development and implementation of a Student Mentorship Program (2014 – Present).

• Element Leader for the Professional Identity, Role, and Advocacy element of the new Entry-to-Practice PharmD curriculum. My role is to work with Module teams to lead the consistent integration of Professional Identity, Role, and Advocacy and promote best practices across the entire curriculum (Jan 2015 – Present).

• Program Development Co-Leader: one of 3 members of the Leadership Team for the creation, development, and implementation of the Doctor of Pharmacy Flexible Program, a (primarily) online program developed to give licensed pharmacists the opportunity to attain the PharmD credentials, launching in January 2017. As part of the Leadership Team, I contributed and continue to contribute significantly to the creation and implementation of the following aspects of the Program (2012 – Present):

o Conducting a BC-wide survey of pharmacist perceptions and preferences about the program

o Creating and co-leading the program’s Steering Committee and 4 program development working groups

o Designing a new competency-based curriculum with mostly asynchronous distance delivery for pharmacists all around BC

o Designing 20 courses and writing their syllabi for the Program approval process and the UBC Calendar.

o Designing a Prior Learning and Recognition system for the Program

o Engaging with the UBC Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology for course development and UBC’s Flexible Learning Initiative

• Project Lead: As the Lead for a project aimed at addressing Professionalism and Chair, Professionalism Committee (2011–Present)

o I led a rigorous process to explore how (and to enhance) professionalism is addressed in Entry-to-Practice curriculum in terms of content and assessment. In the process of doing so, I conducted workshops and presentations for faculty members and students. The work resulted in the development and approval (by the Faculty and the UBC Senate) of a Code of Conduct for all members of the Faculty (faculty members, staff, and students)

• Course Coordinator, Pharmacy 501 (Advanced Pharmacotherapeutics, 12 credit course) within the Doctor of Pharmacy Graduate Program (2008 – Present). I coordinate all aspects of curriculum design (case-based teaching format), scheduling, instructor selection, student evaluation, course and instructor evaluation.

• Course Coordinator, Pharmacy 533-4 (Experiential) within the Doctor of Pharmacy Graduate Program (2008 – Present). I am responsible for all aspects of the clinical clerkship rotations for the Program including preceptor and rotation development, scheduling, student tracking, and evaluations.

• Peer Reviewer: In 2013 I was invited to serve as an External Peer Reviewer for the UBC Faculty Certificate on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education- Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Leadership Program. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of providing feedback to colleagues from other faculties and programs across campus. It has been a meaningful way to “give back” to the SoTL Program. I have been a regular reviewer of the Program since.

9. EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP (a) Areas of Special Interest and Accomplishments

I have a sustained track record of providing educational leadership in a range of pharmacy settings and programs at/affiliated with the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC. These are outlined in specific sections of my CV below.

My most recent accomplishments in educational leadership are in the area of curriculum development, as a co-lead in the development of two new degree programs at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences: the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Entry-to-Practice Program and the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Flexible Program. I am proud of the Assessment Rubric I developed for the professionalism educational outcome of the Entry-to-Practice PharmD Program, which outlines examples of contexts and activities relevant to the levels of complexity in all program years. Assessment of professionalism is based on continued review of student conduct and performance in tasks of relevant year complexity.

In January 2016, I along with two other colleagues was nominated by the Faculty for the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada (AFPC) Janssen Award for Innovation in Education for the work of developing the new Entry-to-Practice PharmD Program curriculum.

In addition to the educational leadership that I have provided at the Faculty-level, I am also accomplished in this area at the University-level, nationally through scholarly involvement with the national professional body representing academic pharmacy in Canada, AFPC (the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada), and internationally through scholarly work with the Academy for Professionalism in Health Care (APHC).

I have recently been invited to join the international Professional/Problem-Based Ethics (ProBE) Program as Prospective Faculty for their first workshop in Vancouver in October 2016. This Program is a United States-based educational intervention in ethics for healthcare professionals who are being disciplined for professional misconduct. ProBE is now available in Canada and because of my experiences and expertise in the areas of ethics and professionalism, I was invited to take part in the Vancouver sessions for consideration as future Faculty in the Program.

Other innovations and accomplishments are highlighted below.

(b) Curriculum Development/Renewal • I designed and am in the process of developing a stream of leadership elective courses called

“Leadership Experience Applied to Pharmacy (LEAP)” for Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy Students at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Within the outcome roles defined by AFPC (the national body representing academic pharmacy in Canada), the development of leadership skills is an expectation of Entry-to-Practice Pharmacy programs. In leading the design and development of this course series, I am supervising a Directed Studies student who assists me in designing the courses and by developing a stakeholders working group to consult on the content of the course series. The first course launches in September 2017.

• One of 3 members of the Leadership Team that created, developed, and is implementing the new Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy Program. This is a competency-based entirely new curriculum leading to a professional doctoral degree. Unique features of the Program are: competency-based learning outcomes within 7 pharmacist roles defined by current accreditation standards, alignment of learning outcomes/competencies, teaching/learning activities and assessment methods, 2 years of pre-pharmacy course work, approximately 20% more credit hours than the original Bachelor degree program, course work focused on Medication

Management organized and delivered in body-system based modules that integrate pharmaceutical with clinical sciences, and integration activities to reinforce and contextualize knowledge and skills in increasingly complex situations. (2013 – 2015)

• One of 3 developers of a Cognitive Model for skill and knowledge outcomes that serves as the basis for course design and student assessment in the new competency-based curriculum for the new Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy Program. The Cognitive Model describes the level of performance students much demonstrate on tasks of defined complexity across the seven outcome roles defined by AFPC (the national professional body representing academic pharmacy in Canada). Complexity of case-based problems encountered by students throughout the curriculum is defined on a scale from “LOW” to “MODERATE-HIGH” complexity. (2013 – 2015)

• Designed, developed and implemented a Professionalism Assessment Rubric for the assessment of the AFPC “Professional” outcome/role in the Entry-to-Practice PharmD Program. The Rubric delineates a competency-based method of assessing students in regard to professionalism and defines “competent-level performance” in each of 13 pre-defined criteria. Assessment of professionalism is based on continued review of student conduct and performance in tasks of relevant year complexity, measured on a scale of low to moderate-high. (2014-2015)

• One of 4 leaders who developed and implemented the Medication Management Modules component of the new Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy Program. These are 17 different body-system based Modules that cover medical conditions with a high level of interdisciplinary integration of essential elements of patient care skills that pharmacists must possess. (2013 – 2015)

• Curriculum Lead for Professionalism, Advocacy, Leadership, and Mentorship in the new Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy Program. In this role I am responsible for developing curricular innovation in such areas. To date, innovations have included the development of: a Professionalism Policy for the new Entry-to-Practice Program PharmD Program, a workshop on professional accountability, curricular activities around professional advocacy, and a Student Mentorship Program. (2015 – Present)

• One of 3 leaders who is creating, developing and implementing the Doctor of Pharmacy Flexible Program. Unique features of the Program: intended for pharmacy professionals who are working, includes a means for attaining recognition for prior learning (“Prior Learning and Recognition – PLAR” process) which defines the mechanism by which students may submit evidence for consideration of recognition of their prior learning, and mostly online didactic coursework. (2013 – Present)

• Co-Chair of the Doctor of Pharmacy Flexible Program Steering Committee comprised of a range of stakeholders responsible for coordinating the activities of Working Groups charged with developing various aspects of the Program. (2014 – Present)

• Leader for the Professional Identity, Role, and Advocacy element of the new Entry-to-Practice PharmD curriculum. As leader for this essential element of patient care skills covered in each of 17 Medication Management Modules, I developed a guide for how these topics are to be addressed in the Integration Activities portion of the Modules. (2013 – Present)

• Led the creation, development and implementation of a Faculty-Student Engagement Program to enhance student connectedness and engagement with faculty members, connect students with role models who exemplify professionalism thereby contributing to the overall culture of professionalism in the Faculty, and enhance student overall experience in the Entry-to-Practice Program PharmD Program (2015 – Present)

• Led a group of students in the creation, development and implementation of a Peer Mentorship Program to enhance student connectedness while promoting camaraderie and developing professionalism and leadership skills in students. (2014 – Present)

• Represented the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the iEthics initiative (an interprofessional Working Group established to develop and test an integrated ethics curriculum, which was launched in September 2015. (2013-14)

• Led the redevelopment of the White Coat Ceremony, an event where pharmacy leaders and delegates present entering students with a white lab coat to symbolize the responsibilities that pharmacists have as health care practitioners and to reflect the commitment expected of students as they transition into becoming professionals. I also developed and implemented a post-White Coat Ceremony workshop with students to ascertain their feedback about the revised format of the event. (2012 – 2013).

• Co-Chaired the Program Advisory Committee which initiated the Faculty’s journey towards renewal of the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy curriculum in order to introduce a higher degree of curricular integration of pharmaceutical and clinical sciences. (2011- 2013)

• In 2011, as part of the leadership team struck to explore the issue of capacity in institutional clerkships as core components of the Entry-to-Practice Programs at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, I was one of 4 individuals who reformulated the learning model with the concept of introducing dedicated on-site expert personnel to provide real-time support for practice educators and students called the Experiential Education Facilitator. That work resulted in the recent hire of a practitioner to pilot the role.

• As the Faculty began to explore the development of a new Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum, I was the co-Chair of the Undergraduate Program Development Committee that oversaw the process and to which all Working Groups reported, and the co-Chair of the Admissions and Pre-Requisites Working Group (2010- 2011)

• As part of the leadership team for the AGILE project (Advancing Experiential Learning in Institutional Pharmacy Practice) aimed at developing recommendations to inform a redesign of institutional experiential pharmacy education in British Columbia, I have been involved in the development and implementation of various aspects of the initiative such as guiding the design of various student:preceptor models of teaching and learning (e.g., tier teaching) and the development of modules to introduce students to institutional practice. (2012-Present)

• As part of the Faculty’s Pharmacist Clinic initial Advisory Group (established to launch the establishment of the Clinic) as well as the subsequent Implementation Advisory Group and the Education Sub-Group, I contributed to the design of opportunities within the new Entry-to-Practice PharmD program and the PharmD Graduate Program to integrate the Clinic as an experiential education site for students. (2013-2014)

• In collaboration with colleagues at the University of Qatar College of Pharmacy, I developed an international partnership whereby students from our PharmD Graduate program complete an academic rotation in Qatar and our Faculty reciprocates by offering Qatari PharmD Students a rotation that provides opportunities to gain exposure to the Canadian academic environment under my supervision. To-date I have precepted 3 international students from the University of Qatar.

• In collaboration with the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology, I developed a Student-to-Preceptor Feedback Workshop for students in the PharmD Graduate Program to develop their skills at providing difficult feedback. The workshop consists of a series of discussions on the process of students providing feedback to their rotation preceptors, the potential challenges that may arise when having to deliver negative feedback, and strategies to overcome these. To facilitate the dialogue and illustrate potential scenarios that may be encountered by students while on rotation, a series of standardized cases are used (2009-Present)

(Oct 2015).

o In collaboration with Drs. Gurdeep and Anita Parhar (Faculty of Medicine), created and implemented an Interprofessional Program on Professional Identity (series of 5 workshops for first year pharmacy and medical students). This work was presented at the Canadian Conference on Medical Education (CCME) in Ottawa in April 2014 and at the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy Conference (AFPC) in Saskatoon. (May 2014)

o In collaboration with two other members of the Faculty, developed a Communications Workshop for students to learn about CV writing and interviewing skills. (2014-15)

o I led a comprehensive process to explore how students in the Entry-to-Practice and the Graduate Programs view professionalism. I developed focus groups to engage in dialogue with the students. The student feedback informed the development of a Code of Conduct for all members of the Faculty (faculty members, staff, and students), a rigorous process that I led, and which resulted in the UBC Senate approval of the Code. (2012 – 2013)

11. SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSITY (a) Areas of Special Interest and Accomplishments One of the most rewarding aspects of my career as an academic has been my involvement with and contributions to the development, revision, and planning of the teaching environment and culture in the Faculty. I have extensive experience leading and contributing to the work of a wide range of teaching and learning initiatives. I believe that I thrive and grow as an academic by enthusiastically taking part in the culture of the environment where I teach. Some areas of accomplishment include:

• In 2012 on my own initiative I approached the Dean of the Faculty to express my interest in exploring how professionalism was addressed in the curriculum and the views of faculty members, staff and students. This work resulted in the creation of the Faculty’s Professionalism Committee (of which I have been Chair since 2012). The Committee undertook a rigorous process to develop a Code of Conduct for the Faculty (approved by UBC Senate Sept 2013, available on the Faculty website http://pharmsci.ubc.ca/community/who-we-are/mission-vision-and-core-values), served as a catalyst and provided direction and leadership on the development, implementation and oversight of professionalism events and activities in the Faculty and within the curriculum, and established mechanisms to recognize and administer awards for professionalism.

• In a Faculty of 60+ faculty members, I am proud to have been selected by the Dean to be:

o One of 2 faculty members representing the Faculty at the Anatomy & Physiology Curriculum Working Group (2011- 2012)

Page 30: Patricia E. Gerber B.Sc.(Pharm), ACPR, Pharm.D., R.Ph., FCSHP · Clinical Pharmacist - Pediatric Neurology 1998 – 2002 Clinical Pharmacist - Adolescent Psychiatry 1994 – 1996
