Patience is a Virtue

“Patience is a virtue.” I’m sure everyone has heard this at one time or another. At least, I remember my parents constantly reminding me as a child, “No cake until supper…because patience is a virtue,” or “Just wait until Christmas, patience is a virtue.” But no matter how many times they said it, I suppose I never fully grasped this so called virtue acquainted with patience. Well, not until May 26 th of this year, when my boyfriend and I walked into the Bangor Humane Society with our friends to fill up some spare time. That day, we fell in love with Curu, our first ferret-which we coincidentally had been planning on getting for 3 months. You see, my boyfriend had expressed his interest in ferrets in the first few months of getting to know each other, and by the time we had moved in with each other in March, we knew that a ferret would be the perfect pet for us to own. Not only did we spend a copious amount of time into researching ferrets using books, websites, and videos, we ending spending a copious amount of money too. In fact, we spent around $600 on a ferret we didn’t even own yet! We would constantly visit pet stores where we would watch ferrets play and beg and plead each other if we could just get one right then and there even though we knew we couldn’t in our current apartment. And I’m glad we waited. Curu, meaning “skill” in Tolkien’s Elvish language, is a black- eyed white female ferret who likes to run, hop, and play. At six months old, she already was litter trained, was past teething, and is now extremely clever. She is the perfect first ferret for us and because of that; we can be successful ferret parents for her and her new little brother, a kit named Morokai. To put it briefly, Curu is my virtue. She did not only help me succeed at being a better pet owner but also a better person by
