A career in medicine is one of the most demanding, rewarding and important paths a person can follow. It is a noble profession which has rightly been highly regarded since the days of the Ancient Romans and Greeks.

By following a career in the medical profession you will be making a daily, active difference to the quality and longevity of people’s lives. As such you will be playing a crucial role in society.

It is therefore not surprising that only the most able and committed people achieve this goal. Only one in 20 of those who apply to Medical School are admitted.

But for those who achieve their ambitions, the rewards — both personal and professional — are quite unique.

“ After doing my AS level at Kings, I spent 2 months in a hospital doing some volunteering. During those 2 months I was able to shadow doctors, nurses, physical therapists and occupational therapists and I knew from that experience that Medicine was the right choice for me.

It’s quite different from Kings at university — you have to manage your time very well, you have exams, but no one will remind you what to study and when to study — you have to be independent. But thanks to Kings, I was prepared for that. ”

Chun Yu Chan (Jeremy) Went on from Kings to study Medicine at Queens University, Belfast (ranked 20 for Medicine)

“ Aside from a very strong academic ability, students need to display strong supporting qualities. Together, this builds the kind of profile that universities look for in successful candidates.

I counsel many Kings students on how to make themselves the outstanding candidate that they need to be to gain entry to a medical degree.

My starting point is always to ensure that students are clear as to why they want to be a Doctor; What have they done that would lead me to believe that this is a genuine interest and concern not just in the science but in caring and concern for others in need?

Work Hard. The overall need is to do well in Biology, Chemistry and their other subject. A grades are a minimum requirement.

Take advantage of the opportunities that we at Kings provide to prepare you for the challenges ahead — UKCAT, BMAT, practice interviews, Medical School Open Days, writing powerful and effective Personal Statements.

Do not forget to work hard also on your English standard and understanding, Interviews, aptitude tests and university offers all rely on really good English.

Work with your dedicated mentor researching the differing Medical schools with their varying requirements.

Take advantage of any voluntary opportunities or work experience in caring for others. Universities want to see a history of commitment on your part. Work with our voluntary work advisor to find suitable placements.

Maintain your focus and commitment for the long haul. Training to be a doctor is a long process and demands tenacity, dedication and strong will. But the rewards are life-changing — for you, and those you will help throughout your career. ”

COURSES AT KINGS

Course structure There are six parts to the A-level programme at Kings:

1. Main subjects Depending on each student’s future degree course and ability, we will agree a personal study programme, choosing from three to five subjects.

2. Academic skills developmentStudents have classes in Academic English. These will help them to use academic English effectively in their studies, and support both their general and subject-specific learning.

3. IELTS preparationAt the same time, they will develop specific skills to enable them to pass the IELTS exam to the level required for university entry.

4. Academic Enrichment programmeStudents are also exposed to a variety of topics, including PSHE, Creative Arts and PE, as part of the Academic Enrichment programme.

5. Examination practiceStudents have practice exams every week to ensure that they learn the disciplines of working concisely, accurately and to precise time limits. These also give teachers valuable information about students’ progress so they can make sure each lesson is relevant to their exact needs.

6. ExaminationsExamination structures for A-level vary by subject, but all involve a final examination at the end of year 2

As well as your main small-group classes, this programme may include lectures, problem-solving classes, revision clinics, workshops, practice exams and one-to-one tutorials.

You will also be expected to spend 14 to 20 hours per week on individual study, reading and research.

“ I am currently studying the second year of my A-level course in Kings Oxford. I have Biology, Chemistry and Maths as my three subjects. I'm not suggesting that it is easy but I think if someone works for it, it is not impossible to finish the course with good marks and an acceptance from a university that you want.

[Kings] has some really experienced and educated teachers. Another good thing about the school is that if you have any concerns about any part of your course they will be more than happy to help you with extra classes or such.

I was the head of the charity committee on my first year of A-level. During that time I had fun planning any fundraising for the United World Schools charity and also improved some of my skills that later helped me in my personal statement for universities. ”

SUBJECTS AVAILABLE

CORE SCIENCE SUBJECTS

At the beginning of term we will introduce you to different subjects and help you choose the final subjects most appropriate for your future degree. Depending on your needs and strengths, you will take 3 (or in exceptional circumstances 4) subjects.

Students aiming for medicine must already have 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade A*– A (9 – 7 in new grading system) and at least grade B (6 in new grading system) in Science.

At A-level medicine students must study Chemistry and either Biology, Physics or Mathematics. We recommend students choose among these subjects although it can be possible to choose two and add a third academic subject. This is because universities are often looking for well-rounded candidates with a broad knowledge base across multiple academic disciplines.

Options include:

• Art and Design

• Chinese

• Economics

• English Literature

• Geography

• Government and Politics

• History

• Modern languages

• Psychology

You also have the option of preparing for an exam in your own language as a fourth A-level subject.

A-levels: Biology

A-levels: Subjects available Biology has probably the most accessible content of the three sciences, as it can be related

naturally to all aspects of life. A-level students study carefully, and in detail, how life in the world works: how our bodies work; how diseases stop them working; how plants grow; how life may be threatened by poisonous substances; how ecosystems work; where energy comes from and how organisms use it; how genes and evolution affect us all.

Medical degree progressionA-level Biology, often in conjunction with other science-based subjects, can lead to the following types of degree course. It is a particularly good choice for people who want to pursue a future career in health and clinical professions.

A-LEVELOVERVIEW

CORE SCIENCE SUBJECTS

A-levels: PhysicsThe course will develop students’ essential knowledge and understanding in physics and, where appropriate, the applications of physics in new and changing situations. They will develop an understanding of the link between theory and experiment, and will appreciate how physics is used in present day society. They will recognise the quantitative nature of Physics and understand how mathematical expressions relate to physical principles.

Physics is a challenging and interesting subject which will helps students who take the subject at A-level to understand the world and universe around them.

Some students go on to study Physics at university, and others who study A-level Physics apply their knowledge in another subject area at university. Examples of this are the many branches of engineering, electronics and meteorology. For these careers, A-level Physics is essential.

Other students choose to study Physics because they feel that it will be useful even if not essential for their career. Those intending to follow a career in medicine or biochemistry often fall into this category.

Example degree courses which generally require Physics A-level include:

• Biomedical Sciences

• Biochemistry

• Economics

• Engineering

• Environmental Science

• Forensic Science

• Medical Science

• Medicine

• Optometry

• Pharmacy

• Physiotherapy

• Sports Science

• Veterinary Science

Certain “high demand” courses at a number of universities (in subjects such as the sciences, engineering, computing and economics) may prefer students who have studied Further Mathematics.

Students will gain two A-levels if studying Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

Degree progressionMathematics has wide applications in industry, business, finance, science, technology and many others.

University courses in the following fields all stipulate A-level mathematics as necessary:

• Accounting

• Business Studies

• Computing

• Engineering

• Mathematics

• Physics

There are also a number of other courses where A-level Mathematics is favoured — including Chemistry, Medicine, Architecture and Economics.

Sample enrichment activities• Bletchley Park visit

• The Big Bang fair, NEC Birmingham

• UK Maths Challenge

• Science Club

• Astronomy Club

• Science in the News Club

• Business Enterprise

A-levels: MathematicsMathematics is recommended for any student going on to an academic degree after Kings, especially those wanting to study Medicine. It is the cornerstone of so many degrees, giving students a strong basis for many of the challenges that their future studies will entail.

Content overviewThe A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics courses are designed to encourage students to:

• develop their understanding of mathematics and mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment

• develop abilities to reason logically and recognise incorrect reasoning, to generalise and to construct mathematical proof

• extend their range of mathematical skills and techniques and use them in more difficult, unstructured problem

• develop an understanding of coherence and progression in mathematics and of how different areas of mathematics can be connected

• recognise how a situation may be represented mathematically and understand the relationship between ‘real world’ problems and standard, and other mathematical models and how these can be refined and improved

Mathematics and Further Mathematics are two Mathematics A-levels, often referred to as Double Maths, which must be taken together. Mathematics A-level is studied in one year meaning the pace at which students’ mathematics must develop is very fast.

The Further Mathematics A-level in the second year builds onto the Mathematics A-level content. They are suitable courses for students who have good mathematical ability and who may be considering a university course in mathematics, physics or engineering.

“ When I was applying for university they asked me to submit a personal statement, explaining what I wanted to study. The teachers at Kings helped me — they gave me ideas when I was struggling and helped me correct my mistakes after I’d finished writing it. They also helped me to call the universities and ask for decisions when I was waiting for offers. ”

Jacky is now studying Medicine at Queens University, Belfast (ranked #20 for Medicine).

SPECIALIST MEDICAL PREPARATION

Aside from good grades, students will need to prepare the following for Medical School:

• Take part in work experience

• Take the UKCAT or BMAT test

• Sit for Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs)

At Kings we offer support with all these additional elements of a medical student’s application.

“ I need to do some volunteering work for my university application. I’m going to be a doctor so I need to know how to help people, how to make them happy, how to take care of them and I think that is the most important reason that I do this. I learned how to do things on my own, and that’s so important as well. ”

Farima Phalavan from Iran is now studying Medicine at Buckinghamshire New University.

Pictured here and on the cover, she is shown here volunteering at a retirement home while studying at Kings Bournemouth. This helped her decision to focus on medicine and made her student profile stronger.

See her video by scanning the QR code below:

Dr Andrew Short, Principal at Kings Bournemouth, explains here why relevant work experience is so important to any student seeking a medicine-related career.

“ Students following a Life Sciences or medical pathway have the opportunity during their time at Kings of adding to their profile by completing a period of work experience. We have an agreement with local hospitals which allows students to have direct experience of working in an emergency department or ward, shadowing doctors in their practice. This placement can take place during our Enrichment weeks or out of term time. Students also have the opportunity to join the hospital for longer term voluntary service allowing them to work around school times whilst they study.

Aside from helping students achieve higher grades in their studies and providing an understanding of their chosen career path, work experience can help towards making choices for university courses.

Our university application coordinators confirm that work experience gives students an advantage in applications and some vocational degree courses such as medicine insist that applicants complete work placements before applying. A piece in The Guardian quoting Sheffield University Medical School explains that this helps students to develop their medical knowledge and skills and ensures that they have “an understanding of the complex nature of a doctor's role, as well as being aware of the highs and lows of the profession” which we think is vital for anyone considering a career in such an important sector. ”

Each Kings school has partnerships in place to offer a range of opportunities, and our experienced staff will also assist any student wishing to secure their own work experience.

Opportunities include:

• Local hospitals

• British Red Cross

• St John Ambulance Service

• Lifeguarding

Work experience does not necessarily have to be in a medicine-related area. Aston University, for example, state that they are looking to see that candidates are well-rounded, so volunteering at the local library would demonstrate public facing, teamwork and organisational skills.

Any student wishing to train as a vet must demonstrate relevant work experience in that medical field.

UK CLINICAL APTITUDE TEST (UKCAT)

How do UKCAT universities use UKCAT scores?A consortium of UK university Medical and Dental Schools use the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) as part of the selection process for their medical degree programmes. It is a test specially created to enable data on each student’s cognitive abilities to be analysed. Universities use it to make accurate and informed decisions when awarding limited places.

There are four reasoning tests, as well as a situational judgement test which focuses on students’ attitudes, personality and behaviour in a professional medical context.

The UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) is operated by the UKCAT Consortium in partnership with Pearson VUE.

Note: In the first year (2018 entry), Aston University will not give a UKCAT score guideline. In due course they expect to set minimum UKCAT scores.

How the UKCAT scores workThe number of questions differs between each section of the exam:

• Verbal Reasoning: 44 questions

• Quantitative Reasoning: 36 questions

• Abstract Reasoning: 55 questions

• Decision Making: 29 questions

• Situational Judgement: 68 questions

In each of Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Decision Making, you will be awarded a raw score depending on the number of correct answers given. This score is then scaled into a score between 300 and 900 points. You can therefore score between 1200 and 3600 points overall.

Situational Judgement assesses non-academic skills, such as teamwork, empathy and communication skills. In this section the scoring differs in that the correct answer scores full points but other answers close to the correct answer may also score points. The raw score then falls into one of four bands, with Band 1 being the highest and Band 4 the lowest.

Timing of the UKCAT testFor each section of the UKCAT test, timing is different. The exam is structured in the following ways:

• Verbal Reasoning: 21 minutes, plus one minute of reading

• Quantitative Reasoning: 24 minutes, plus one minute of reading

• Abstract Reasoning: 13 minutes, plus one minute of reading

• Decision Making: 32 minutes, plus one minute of reading

• Situational Judgement: 26 minutes, plus one minute of reading

MMI INTERVIEWS

MMI overview:MMIs consist of several short practical assessments, usually less than 10 minutes each. Students are presented with the scenario a few minutes before the interview to allow time to prepare.

The student is then either asked a question by the interviewer or has to take part in a role-play scenario with an actor whilst the interviewer observes.

• MMI interviews will probably take about 2 hours

• Each mini interview will take no longer than 10 minutes

• Most universities will have around 10 MMI ‘stations’

Types of Stations at MMI sessionsMMI interviews will take various formats according to the school, however the Medic Portal gives the following examples for students:

• You will be presented with a set of instructions that describe a situation involving an ethical scenario, which you will then be asked to discuss or try and solve

• You will be given a scenario involving an actor — for example, you might have to break some bad news to them or gather specific information

• You may be given a task involving teamwork with other applicants

• There might be a station where you are asked a traditional interview question or given a reading comprehension exercise

• You are given a sheet of data and asked to provide analysis of it

What do Admission staff look for during MMI interviews? The Medic Portal says:

MMI interviews are about showing your interviewer what you’re capable of doing, rather than just telling them.

Interviewers want to know that you’ve got what it takes to be a medical practitioner — not just the grades and know-how, but the right attitude and skills as well.

They will be testing your ability to make ethical and informed decisions, as well as your critical thinking and communication skills. They will also be interested in your knowledge of current healthcare and social issues.

Some example MMI interview scenarios Example 1:An actor plays the role of your elderly neighbour. You have just accidentally run over your neighbour’s cat whilst reversing your car. You have 5 minutes to break the bad news to her.

This role-play tests insight, integrity, communication skills and empathy.

Example 2:You are given details of 15 individuals, including their age, gender and occupation. A nuclear attack is imminent and you are only allowed to save 5 of them from destruction. Which ones and why?

A prioritisation exercise. The emphasis is on problem solving and rational thinking under pressure.

Example 3:Without using your hands, explain how to tie shoe laces.

Tests verbal communication skills, the ability to break down the task into a series of small steps and your ability to check that the interlocutor is understanding what you are saying.

Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs)

“ I definitely do love it here; I have to say it’s very different from my time at Kings. It’s a much larger environment than what you’d experience at Kings, but the social experience you get there helps a lot when you’re trying to meet new people in university. ”

Identification of potential Medical students

• Potential 2- year A-level candidates will be identified during their first year of A-levels.

• 1-year A-level students will be identified at point of application.

• Aston University pathway students will be identified at the point of application.

• UCLAN pathway students will be identified at point of application or within the first 2 weeks of the course.

There is no requirement for these students to take the UKCAT test.

Booking a UKCAT test

• Booking the UKCAT Test needs to be done by an individual and can be done online.

• Students will need to book between May and October for the following year’s academic intake.

• The UKCAT will need to be taken by the October of the year before student will apply to university.

For students on the Advanced Level Foundation, booking should be done before coming to the UK.

Kings advise booking at the nearest centre to the school and will give the earliest suggested dates for registration of the UKCAT. This is because we will provide a full day of UKCAT preparation and training at one of our colleges.

Preparation for UKCAT

• A-level students are given preparation support during term 3 of their first year. This will consist of past papers and discussion, as well as Maths support where appropriate.

• The UKCAT website has the best and most relevant resources for preparing students within the Advisor Toolkit section:

ukcat.ac.uk/preparation/adviser-toolkit

APPLICATION SUPPORT AND TIMELINE

UCAS application

Once the UKCAT test has been taken students will need to complete their UCAS application by 15 October.

Students’ results will be delivered direct to the universities to which students have applied. Once applications are made, universities will usually require students to attend MMIs in order to help them decide which students will be offered places.

Preparation for MMIs

Kings will offer specialist support to all students with offers from universities which require MMIs (multiple mini interviews).

• A-level students can begin preparation term 3 of the first year. This will consist of general interview practice and we can use staff at the student’s college or another Kings college to provide practice sessions.

• 1-year A-level students, Aston students and UCLAN students will be given interview practice as part of their academic enhancement sessions. This will include sessions exploring topics which are relevant to the exam as well as interview technique. Students will also benefit from practice interviews.

• Kings will provide all students who will be completing an MMI with a full day of preparation and training from Duo UK on Interview Guidance and Communication Skills specifically for MMIs

• Students will be filmed during the interview; will be given instant feedback and guidance — which will also be filmed. This will be provided as a DVD for use when preparing further.

• This training will take place towards the end of November. MMIs are usually undertaken in January, but some can take place in December.

Completing the MMIs

Universities will ask students to attend the Multiple Mini Interviews once their applications are successful.

Kings will provide help with arranging transport to the university and Kings staff can provide help with accommodation if required.
