Welcome
The highly trained faculty members at the Northwell Health Department of Pathology and
Laboratory Medicine are committed to preparing residents to practice in either an academic or
community-based setting, while providing an excellent clinical experience in a supportive
environment.
Resident training is a vital part of providing outstanding patient care. The department works as
partners with residents in utilizing the latest technologies, research disease processes and
developing new program initiatives to improve educational offerings – all things that are essential
to maintaining high standards for care. Our program has been fully accredited for the past 30
years and our residents receive comprehensive combined training in anatomic and clinical
pathology.
Our greatest strengths include a chair who is a nationally recognized leader in pathology
education, research and lab directorship, as well as a program director and coordinator whose
primary focus is serving as advocates for our trainees. This is an exceptionally transparent
program and residents have multiple avenues for evaluating the program and faculty, which we
encourage. These evaluations are scrutinized by the program director and used to improve the
effectiveness of the educational experience. We also meet with the pathology house staff once
a month to discuss any issues that arise. Our residents are our partners in providing the best
educational experience available.
Northwell Hospitals earned 23 national rankings in the 2019-2020 US News and World Report
Best Hospital survey. Our residents rotate through two of the highly ranked hospitals, which are
both large tertiary hospitals: Long Island Jewish Medical Center (1025 beds) and North Shore
University Hospital (764 beds). In addition, residents rotate through a state-of-the-art health
system core laboratory, as well as the Northwell Health Anatomic Pathology Services, a stand-
alone surgical pathology office suite.
With nearly 110,000 surgical specimens, 200,000 cytology specimens, and 11 million billable tests
overseen by more than 40 anatomic and clinical pathologists many who are alumni of our
Residency Program. This team-oriented department offers extraordinary opportunities in
pathology residency education. In addition, research opportunities are available within the
department and in collaboration with the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.
We are very excited about our involvement with the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of
Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. The department faculty is extensively involved in the integrated
two-year structure course and incorporates many of the active learning strategies utilized at the
medical school into our residency program didactic sessions.
This is a department with an experienced, dedicated faculty, committed to excellence in patient
care and graduate medical education, set in a nurturing and friendly environment. It’s challenging
and a lot of fun!
Sincerely,
Michael Esposito, MD

Welcome
Northwell Health is an exciting, dynamic place to train. Our health system as a whole and
department are ever-growing, and residents will get to experience this first-hand. In addition to
learning how to render diagnoses, you will become familiar with laboratory management,
informatics, and digital pathology. There is ample opportunity for research; our residents have a
stellar track record of presenting at national meetings and getting published in high-impact peer-
reviewed journals.
As a recent graduate of this program, I know how demanding AP/CP training at Northwell can be.
It helps a great deal to have a supportive administration, and we pride ourselves on having an
open-door policy as it pertains to resident feedback. We also emphasize wellness and work -life-
balance. The friendships you will make amongst your peers will last with you as you move on to
fellowship training and beyond. The next four years will undoubtedly be challenging, but
simultaneously some of the most rewarding and invaluable of your careers.
Chief Residents: 2019-2020
Alex Drach, M.D.
I grew up in Netcong, New Jersey. I earned my bachelor's degree in Cell Biology and Neuroscience at
Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. I obtained my medical degree from Albany Medical College in
Albany, NY from 2012 - 2016. I enjoy playing guitar and recording music as a hobby, as well as exploring
the local eateries on Long Island and in New York City. Next year, I will be completing a fellowship in
Pediatric Pathology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital in Ohio, joining my fiancé who is currently training
there for a Pediatric Palliative Care fellowship.
Cao Jin (Jimmy) M.D. PhD
I grew up in Shanghai, China. I earned my medical degree from Shanghai JiaoTong University in China.
After that, I went to University of Otago, New Zealand for my PhD degree. After my Chief year, I plan on
pursuing my interest in breast/Gynecological pathology. I enjoy traveling, trying out new restaurants,
catching up on museum shows and spending time with friends and family.
Scott Wolfe, D.O.
I am the most local resident having grown up down the road in Great Neck, New York. I received my
bachelor’s degree from Cornell University followed by a master’s at Columbia University, before
completing my medical degree from LECOM. After completing AP/CP residency I will be continuing my
pathology training with a fellowship in GI pathology at the University of Arizona. After this I hope to
attain a position at an academic hospital. When I’m not at the hospital I enjoy trying new restaurants in
NYC, attending concerts and brewing my own beer.

APC 2019 Annual Meeting
Scholar of ’67 Reflection Report
Yonah Ziemba, MD
Resident, PGY3
The opportunity to receive the Society of ’67 Scholars Travel Award and attend the 2019 meeting has
been gratifying in many aspects. In this report, I will attempt to describe three of them.
Insight into the mindset of a leader
As a resident, we frequently see the decisions made by department leadership without understanding
the underlying decision process. At the APC meeting, for the first time in my career, I was exposed to
leaders of departments who were meeting to join forces, grapple with common challenges, and share
advice. I was impressed that the sense of responsibility they felt went beyond their own patients and
beyond their own departments; it extended to the specialty of pathology wherever it is practiced.
Building relationships
More than any other meeting I have attended, the interpersonal dynamic between attendees who have
never previously met each other was that of teammates, members of the same community, united and
working towards common goals. People did not congregate in closed groups based on their home
institution, but rather looked outward to greet new people and learn new things. This was especially
true in how the senior leadership welcomed, mentored and formed relationships with the young
trainees. For me personally, two relationships forged at the meeting which I expect to continue in the
future are with Dr Stan Robby (former president of CAP) and Dr. Melissa Upton (president of ASCP).
Opportunity to serve
I was privileged to lead the Social Media Committee of the 2018 and 2019 meetings of the Association of
Pathology Chairs, and this has been more meaningful to me than any other aspect of the meeting. I saw
what it felt like to be a leader. I was trusted with an important goal, and I was empowered by senior
leadership, most notably by Priscilla Markwood. My voice really mattered to an important institution,
and my ideas could really be implemented. It is an opportunity for which I am very grateful.

Nalan Yurtsever PGY1
I graduated from Ankara University School of Medicine. I became interested in pathology during medical
school after seeing that all branches of medicine depended on pathology for diagnosis and follow-up.
Later I did basic lab research and an observership to enhance my experience. I really enjoyed seeing a
pathologist as a consultant for other physicians, continuously interacting with them. I chose Northwell
for AP/CP residency after my interview as it was a wonderful day with friendly people in a beautiful area
of Long Island. I was extremely happy after I got my match result because Northwell is a strong
institution with a strong pathology department, offering high number of good cases in a congenial
teaching environment without overwhelming the residents with scutwork. I am only PGY-1 but so far I
am interested in blood bank because I see it as the best of both worlds: some clinical and some
laboratory. Outside of work I love spending time with my family, traveling to different areas of the world,
cooking and baking delicious food.
