Hey!If you are between the ages of 12-100 and you love water, competitive sports, and lots of fun, you are invited to be in the 4th An -nual Pateros Dragon Boat Races on July 23, 2011.

What is a dragon boat?A dragon boat is a long, narrow 46’ canoe for 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steers-man. Dragon boats will sport a large deco-rative dragon head and tail for race events.

Why do we race dragon boats? In the United States, dragon boat racing is an exciting spectator sport that is lots of fun. In China and other Asian countries, dragon boat races commemorate annual water rituals and festival celebrations in June. There are over 50 million racers world wide.

What it cost to join a team?Registration for this team will be $25 per participant. Your registration fee entitles you to 2-3 team practices, and at least 3 races on race day. All equipment for dragon boating is provided. Trophies and awards will be presents afterthe races.

Team practicesThe practice schedule will be in Pateros, the week of July 22. Times will be announced at a later date. All practices are open to the public and for paddlers of any experience.

Who do we race?We encourge YOU to challenge other schools, towns, businesses, friends, ball teams, anyone you know that may be fun to compete against. The more teams we have, the more races there will be. The course will be 250 meters long (about 820 feet). We will have a 500 meter course for clubs. All races are timed heats.

If you want to sponsor a teamThis is an excellent team building experience that people of all ages can participate and excel in!Community teams may be sponsored for $500. Community teams have a crew of 20 paddlers, 2-4 alternates and a drum-mer. Equipment, a certified steersman, and coach will be provided for the practices to prepare your team for the race. For more information contact Joni Parks at 509-670-8185, email at [email protected], or stop by Pateros City Hall.

Our event is scheduled for July 23 approximately 10am - 8pm
