Meeting notes:

Patricia's and Juan's anticipated absences were noted and they

were missed.

Juan's notes were read, and his desire to sell Oasfis garage sale

things at work approved.

Peggy will look into the community center at Fashion Square

Mall as another place for Oasfis monthly meetings.

Sci Fi Lite is next Saturday, 1/18, at Lolailo the Original.

Hurricane Who's Christmas episode viewing party was a success,

and a summary of 50th Anniversary and other Who news

discussed. Hurricane Who's June 14th tickets will be on sale

soon.

Season 3 of Sherlock began - the protagonist survived the fall!

Atlantis has found it's audience. Agents of the SHIELD Feb. 4th

episode will be featuring Stan Lee in a juicy role. Ken said 47

Ronin featuring Keeanu Reeves as a half- Samurai distracts

from the true story. He also didn't recommend Saving Mr. Banks.

Frozen was recommended as fun but forgettable, based on

Hans Christian Anderson's The Snow Queen. Ender's Game had

mixed reviews, since it condenses several books into one, and the

protagonist is older than in the books. Kim gave thumbs up to the

new Grisham book, Sycamore Row. Peggy proposed that a book

be chosen for discussion each meeting, even if we have time to

read only a few chapters. Mars, Inc. by Ben Bova will be our

February book. In noting other good books, Peggy is rereading

James Herriot's books, Dave Ratti is reading James P. Hogan,

Bob is reading Pandemonium, sequel to Fragment, and Treasurer

David Lussier is reading Under the Graveyard Sky by John

Ringo. Arthur is enjoying the Doctor Who comic, “The Girl Who

Loved Dr. Who” by Paul Cornell who has also written three

episodes of Doctor Who and several novels.

This led into Juan's talk, given by Secretary Pat, about the best

SF Books of 2013, which was well- received. The list was based

on the io9’s 2013 Best Novels list. The list is below. Thanks to

all for their edits and comments, and to President Peggy for a

great first meeting.

Neptune’s Brood by Charles Stross

Swampcon Rising

Swampcon Rising was held at the Reitz Student Union

at the University of Florida on January 18-19, 2014. Richard Lee

Byers and William Hatfield were Guests of Honor. Memberships

were free.

The convention decided to place the artist alley and fan

tables in the breezeway in front of the Student Union. On both

days temperatures dipped into the 50s and it was windy. There

was not a lot of traffic in the breezeway and after a few hours

many of the groups that had tables decided to leave. Part of the

Student Union were not available due to construction. Hopefully

next year, the tables can be placed inside the building.

Stone Hill, the group which puts on Necronomicon, did

several panels. The panels were on Doctor Who, the CW

network, the Marvel movie universe, Sherlock Holmes, and Star

Wars vs. Star Trek. The panel on the CW looked at the SF/

Fantasy/Superhero shows on the Network. These included

Arrow, Supernatural, The Tomorrow People, The Originals,

and Smallville. The Doctor Who panel allowed the panelists and

audience to discuss the recent season and what they would like to

see in the show’s future. The Marvel panel examined the recent

Marvel films.

Propeller Anime, and Orlando anime club, did 4 panels

on Sunday. The panels covered supporting characters of anime, a

death match between anime characters, the Best of 2013, and the

Best of 1990s.

The Best of 2013 included the following anime:

Attack on Titan – In an alternate world, humans are on the

verge of extinction due to man-eating giants. A young boy

grows up to fight back with his friends.

Little Witch Academia – A crowd source funded short film

about a witch school.

Kill La Kill – A girl searches for her father’s killer with a

sentient school uniform and a scissor blade in a post-

apocalyptic future.

Yowapeda – A high school freshmen discovers his talent as

bike rider and joins the school’s cycling team

Kick-Heart – A story of love in the world of wrestling.

The Best of 1990s included:

Nadia: Secret of the Blue Water – Jewel thieves tries to

steal a pendant from a mysterious young girl in this

steampunk world.

Ghost in the Shell – A cyberpunk mystery with a cyborg

protagonist who questions her humanity.

Neon Genesis Evangelion – Teenagers pilot mecha to

defend humanity from giant monsters. A good combination

of action and teen angst.

Macross Plus – Two pilots are testing new airplanes. Their

rivalry takes a new level when they compete for the

affections of an idol singer.

Golden Boy – A happy go lucky 20 something goes from job

to job having fun adventures with attractive women.

Revolutionary Girl Utena – A tomboy wants to become a

Dear OASFiSians:

Many thanks for the January Event Horizon, and it’s much

bigger than the usual! It’s got to be full of pictures…let’s see

what I can say about them.

Looks like 2013 was a great year for most fans, and 2014 holds

lots of promise. I sincerely hope it does for me… the job hunt

continues ever onwards. Not many jobs for me are there to apply

to. However, time for more searching, and hopes that the spring

will be a little better. And, a little warmer wouldn’t hurt.

My first memories of Worldcon were going to Chicon IV in

1982, and almost immediately running into Forry Ackerman…

several times over the five days of the convention. I think your

most enjoyable Worldcon is your first one. My favorite personal

Worldcon moment was going up on stage in Montréal in 2009 to

announce a Hugo, followed by being nominated for a Hugo in

2010.

Juan, the .pdf I downloaded says that there is 60 pages in it. In

going through it, I am finding that the issue has six pages in it,

and the .pdf contains ten copies of this six-page zine. Definitely

very odd, but that’s okay. Thanks for this issue, and see you with

the next one.

Yours, Lloyd Penney

Sorry about the file you got Lloyd. That is the mailing file I use

for the hardcopies I send out. It has been fixed. Thank You.

1990s

A Slytherin student,

A local Ghostbuster team with containment unit and friend

prince and goes to a surreal high school.

Princess Mononoke – A cursed prince searches for a cure to

his curse and discovers a conflict between a wolf-girl and

town. Nature is out of balance and it must be restored.

Cowboy Bebop – Bounty hunters trying to make ends meet

and not get killed. This is set in time when the solar system

is well colonized.

(Continued from page 4) Perfect Blue – A young idol singer tries to transition to an

acting career while being stalked by a crazy fan.

For each of the presentations, the opening credits or in trailers

were shown.

The convention was well attended and covered several

fandoms. Next year I may submit some literary programming

items for consideration.
