What do the words ?thank you? mean, anyway? Among the many meanings,  thank you means, I noticed that you noticed. I noticed that you cared for me. I noticed that I mattered to you. I noticed that you helped somebody. I noticed that you gave of yourself. I noticed that you sacri ficed. I noticed that you took a risk. I noticed that you noticed. Thank you.

St. Paul says in I Corinthians 1:3-9, ?I continual ly thank God for you.? Paul noticed that the people noticed the power of Jesus in thei r l ives and he said thank you to them. Al l ten of the people cured of leprosy in the Gospel were surely very grateful to be healed (Luke 17:11-19). The one who returned to say thank you is the one who noticed where the cure came from. The one who said thank you is the one who noticed that Jesus noticed.

As Thanksgiving Day approaches, we are invi ted to take note of who has noticed us and consider whom we need to notice. Thanksgiving is about recognizing those who have cared for us, sacri ficed for us, have been generous wi th us, sensi t ive to us, taken risks for us. We say thank you because they noticed. At this t ime, we are also cal led to see who is out there in our fami ly, neighborhood, parish, school, work, bigger world that we need to notice. Who needs our care, compassion or understanding? Who have we not noticed, or maybe even ignored that could be given encouragement because we noticed.

This Sunday, we say thank you to Pat O'Tero who for many years has been involved in the music ministry of the parish including di recting the choi r at the 9:30 a.m. Mass. We have noticed your commitment and love for music and the Li turgy through which the parish has been blessed. We notice that you have noticed how wonderful i t is when we gather each Sunday to give praise to the Lord through music.

To Pat and to al l at Christ Cathedral Parish, we say thank you. We notice al l the ways you help this parish to flourish as a place of uni ty and fai th. As a parish, may we always notice those who have noticed us. May we notice those whom we need to notice. To the Lord and to you, we simply say, thank you!

Together in fai th,

Martyr of Vietnam. Bernard was born in 1755 and was ordained a priest in his homeland. He spent many years in missionary work before retiring.

At age eighty-three, he declared his faith and his priesthood to a group of soldiers, where upon he was beheaded. He was canonized in 1988.

pr ayer of an expectant mot herLord Jesus, I lovingly pray for this sweet hope that I keep within my womb. You have granted me the immense gift of a tiny little life, living in my own life, and I humbly thank you for choosing me as an instrument of your love. In this sweet waiting, help me to live in a constant attitude of self-surrender to your willMary, you have known the ineffable joy of a holy motherhood; give me a heart that can transmit an ardent, living faith. Sanctify my waiting, bless this joyful hope that is in me, grant that the fruit of my womb may open out in virtue and in holiness through your working with that of your divine Son Amen

A good choi r di rector is not only a talented singer, but also one that plans music selections that are appropriate for each Mass and wi l l encourage the congregation to part icipate. ?If the congregation doesn?t part icipate, you aren?t doing your job as a choi r di rector,? says Pat O?Tero, who concludes her service as 9:30 a.m. Mass Choir Di rector on Sunday, November 22, 2015.

O?Tero, who has served her communi ty for nearly three decades, is an amazing example of a dedicated and talented choi r di rector. She treated her posi t ion wi th reverence and as a cal l ing from God, ?I love what I do, i t is not a job, i t is my vocation.?

She understands the importance of encouraging every person in Mass to part icipate. ?It?s the people of God that are important, they are our main focus, we serve them during the Mass,? she said.

After being baptized at St. Cal l istus in her 20?s, O?Tero joined the choi r as a way to stay involved and give back to the communi ty at the parish. It was during this t ime as a member of the choi r that O?Tero grew to understand the importance worship music has during the celebration of Mass. Throughout this t ime as wel l , she learned from many other members of the choi r and clergy the importance of being pastoral and welcoming to al l who entered the church.

?Ms. O?Tero has always been very welcoming and support ive when I fi rst joined her choi r at 12 years old. Over the years, Ms. Otero has al lowed me to sing and to share my talent wi th the church and for that I wi l l always be grateful,? said Joyce Amposta.

O?Tero?s desi re to have al l parishioners become involved in the Mass led her to create a young adult choi r to perform during the Saturday evening service. She cult ivated a welcoming envi ronment at every Mass, encouraging al l present to sing.

?She is passionate about the music we sing and she always chal lenges us to be better as a choi r. After having many choi r rehearsals and spending t ime wi th each other, our choi r fami ly has been a real joy. I am very blessed to know her and to see God?s love in her devotion to music,? said Amposta.

"Pat, wi l l be sincerely missed by myself and my fami ly. It 's been a true pleasure singing wi th you.  And as they say  "Al l good things must come to an end" We have 25 years of awesome memories.  We love you," said Vi rginia Gonzalez.

The month of November is the tradi t ional season for Cathol ics to prayerful ly remember al l those who have gone before us ?marked by the sign of fai th.? Fol lowing the Solemni ty of Al l Saints that remembers al l those who have l ived the l i fe of fai th wi th integri ty and are now one wi th the Lord in heaven, we celebrate Al l Souls Day. This day of prayer for the dead provides the opportuni ty for us to surround our beloved dead wi th our prayers, especial ly through the Eucharist ic celebration, as we companion them on thei r journey to the Father.

Each and everyone one of us wi l l be touched by the real i ty of death in the course of our journey of fai th. We have al l experienced the painful leave-tak ing of a loved one in death as we prepare for our own ?going forth? through death to eternal l i fe in Christ.

The funeral ri tes of our Church help us to remember that no one truly dies alone but is accompanied by the communi ty of bel ievers as eterni ty opens for each one of us. The reformed l i turgy of our Church and part icularly i ts funeral ri tes provide opportuni t ies for fami ly and friends of the deceased to actively enter into this moment of passage as we shape a truly fi t t ing farewell for our loved ones.

The Diocese of Orange has recently publ ished two helpful resources for fami l ies and individuals who are cal led upon to plan a funeral celebration for a loved one. They are a Guide to Cathol ic Funerals and Words of Remembrance ? Guide for Wri t ing a Funeral Reflection. Both resources are avai lable in the parish offices, Cathol ic cemeteries as wel l as onl ine (rcbo.org/ resource/guide-to-cathol ic-funerals/ ). These resources can be a helpful guide for fami l ies as they help shape a funeral celebration that both respects the funeral tradi t ion of our Church as wel l as personal izes this important moment of remembrance and prayer.

The most advantageous t ime of preparation is before the crisis of an immediate death. In the course of a grave i l lness of a loved one, i t would be both beneficial and comfort ing for fami ly members to fami l iarize themselves wi th these guidel ines. May they assist you in preparing a fi t t ing and worthy celebration of prayer and remembrance for a brother or sister as they prepare for the ful lness of eternal l i fe.

NOVEMBER: REMEMBRANCE SEASON

¿Qué quieren deci r las palabras ?gracias? en cualquier manera? Entre muchos signi ficados, gracias quiere deci r, he notado que te estás dando cuenta. He notado que me t ienes cariño. He notado que te importo. He notado que ayudaste a tal persona. He notado que has dado de t i mismo. He notado que te has sacri ficado. He notado que tomaste un riesgo. He notado que te has dado cuenta. Gracias.

MASSES AND MANDARIN

By LESLIE BERKMAN

Chinese chi ldren, many from immigrant fami l ies wi th Buddhist roots, come to the Christ Cathedral campus in Garden Grove each Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon to learn Mandarin and the culture of thei r ancestors. As a bonus they are also gently exposed to Cathol icism.

Founded 32 years ago, Sacred Heart (Sheng Hsin) Cathol ic Chinese School in September moved from St. Justin Martyr Church in Anaheim to the Pastoral Center at Christ Cathedral.

?Our existence is for one thing: to evangel ize,? says Tony Cheng, vice president of the Orange County Chinese Cathol ic Association, which oversees the school as one of i ts ministries. Cheng says although numerous schools teach Mandarin, only Sacred Heart Cathol ic Chinese School also teaches the Cathol ic fai th wi th the support of the Diocese of Orange.

On a recent Sunday, youngsters learned about the seven sacraments. They were taught about baptism and penance by making bal ls of newspaper and noticing how blackened thei r hands became in the process and had to be washed clean, just as those sacraments cleanse the soul.

Leonard Sun, the school?s principal, says lder students are taught about Christ ian social justice, including thei r duty to save water and in other ways protect nature and also to care for the most vulnerable, such as the disabled. Although prayers are not reci ted in class, Sun encourages the students to pray at home.

Cheng says the school?s job is to explain the Cathol ic fai th and treat the immigrants wi th understanding. ?We basical ly are sowing the seed, not knowing when we can reap the harvest,? he says.

Parents say they are very comfortable wi th what thei r chi ldren are taught under Sun?s guidance, especial ly about obeying parents and showing

respect for elders and teachers? al l of which meshes wel l wi th thei r cultural values. They also say they appreciate Sun?s k indness and the fami ly-l ike bonds that have developed between the students and thei r teachers.

Mimee Tang, 46, a Vietnamese immigrant and Buddhist who l ives in Garden Grove, says she and her sister send thei r chi ldren to the school ?to keep the language and culture al ive.? She also hopes that knowing Chinese wi l l open career opportuni t ies for her 15-year-old daughter. Tang says what her daughter has learned about Cathol icism already has helped her understand world history in high school.

For the minori ty of chi ldren whose parents are Cathol ic, rel igious instruction is preparation for baptism. Clara Leung of Huntington Beach, who emigrated wi th her fami ly from Hong Kong four months ago, enrol led her 10-year-old son Bryant and 7-year-old daughter Sophie in the school in anticipation of thei r baptism on Holy Saturday. ?I l ike the school because I learn about Jesus,? says Bryant. He also says he is learning about prayer and he prays that his dad finds a good job in his new country.

After school, the two older chi ldren joined thei r mother and two-year-old sister at a Chinese Mass that is celebrated each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on the Christ Cathedral campus by Father Joseph Yang, the spi ri tual di rector for the Chinese communi ty at Christ Cathedral.

Father Joseph wants t ies between the Chinese Mass and the Chinese school to strengthen. He says would l ike the students to attend the Chinese Mass to learn more about Cathol icism and to present some of thei r artwork and Chinese spi ri tual readings to the congregation.

The spi ri tual and temporal efforts to make the Christ Cathedral campus the true center of the Diocese of Orange are aimed at bui lding a deeper uni ty of purpose and mission among Cathol ics wi thin our local Church and a renewed commitment to permeating the world wi th the love of Christ.

Flowing from the Eucharist, the source and summit of Cathol ic bel ief and practice, the Christ Cathedral campus intends to be place of outreach to the material ly poor and marginal ized, catechesis, evangel ization, ecumenical dialogue, interrel igious cooperation and theological discourse.

In the spi ri t of Christ, we welcome al l people to come to be renewed in spi ri t and truly know that they are loved by God. In addi t ion to activi t ies of the cathedral parish, diocese, parishes of the diocese, Cathol ic schools and Cathol ic organizations, the Christ Cathedral campus is a gathering place for cultural, civic and social events.
