Pastor’s Column: Camping with Our Church Family

Come to Cornerstone’s Church Camp.

Come to Church Camp and spend time with your Church family; the kind of time we never

have together on a Sunday morning. Breakfasts together around the dining hall, campfires together at

night, devotions and games and projects and a lot of good hang-out time all throughout the day. Have

conversations that go deeper than “Good Morning.” Get to know the people who worship beside you

every week.

Come to Church Camp and spend time in God’s creation: the hills, the pines, the skies, the

river. Fish in the pond. Deer in the field. The camp dog. The hike to the cross up atop the hill. The feeling

of being away from your routine – and a lot closer to the Divine.

Come to Church Camp and make crafts. Camp candles, and camp necklaces, and tie-dye T-

shirts. Camp lets your creative side out, or at least reminds you this is just for fun, so it’s okay the statue

you glued together out of macaroni looks less like you and more like a duck.

Come to Church Camp and do something new: how about a ropes’ course through the

trees? Or a zip line across the heavens? How about a four-sided climbing tower reaching three stories up?

This is not your grandmother’s Church Camp! (Well, actually Lazy F Camp has been a United Methodist

campsite for over 60 years now, so technically this could be your grandmother’s Church Camp; but she’d

have a hard time recognizing it, with all the new facilities, programs and fun stuff!)

Come to Church Camp and stay in accommodations ranging from rugged to refined,

between hotel-like digs in the lodges, to the more traditional cabins or if you prefer you can even bring

your RV. When was the last time you fought over who gets to sleep in the top bunk? Or when was the

last time you went to camp – and didn’t have to sleep in a bunk bed at all?

Who is Church Camp for? Everyone. It is for couples. It is for singles. It is for little kids. It is for

seniors. It is for youth. It is for young adults. It is our once-a-year special-opportunity to “get away

from it all” and spend extra time with God together. It’s an opportunity

to build relationships, and create memories. And it’s a time to submerge ourselves in Christian

community, with prayers and songs and devotions and lots of grace.

Come to Church Camp early, during the “Serve” portion of the week, and get extra every-

thing: Extra Church family time. Extra time away with God. Extra time to soak in the setting.

Extra time to serve with your Church. Extra time to be at Camp! That starts on Wednesday,

August 5th.

Then stay for the Church Camp weekend portion, which is basically a week of camp activities

packed into a weekend: inner-tubing down the river, water-sports, archery, climbing wall or zipline,

hiking, crafts, chapel and baptism in the river for any who have not yet received the baptismal

waters, but who are ready to take those steps into the Christian faith and life! That starts on Friday,

August 7th. (You can come to either or both!)

Friends, now is the time to sign up for Cornerstone’s All-Church Camp weekend. The fliers,

dates, costs and details are available on the foyer table. All meals are included: rooms, showers,

programs and gorgeous 98 acres of sunshine and pine trees. You can visit Lazy F’s website and learn

more about the camp at: www.lazyfcamp.org, or you can speak to event organizers like Shannon

Brannon or Janie Whitnell. And yes, the Murphy family will be there throughout!

This is a year where our hope is for a huge turnout, that we may really go deeper in

relationship with one another. This weekend only comes but once a year – don’t miss it! Be a part

of it! Come spend time with your Church and our God. Come to Cornerstone’s Church Camp!

Looking forward to our summer together with God,

Pastor James Murphy

New Donation Request: Lollipops by the Thousands Our Share Team will be leading our Church in two big Outreach Events this Summer in June and

July: a Church Float (and presence) in the parades in Maple Valley Days and Covington Days! The Maple

Valley Days parade will be Saturday, June 13th and the Covington Days parade the 18th of July. We will be

asking absolutely everyone to join us for those events, that together as a Church family we would walk to-

gether with our float and invite our communities to check us out and join us for a Sunday of Worship!

And as part of those outreaches (as is true at every parade!) we will have candy to give out to the crowds.

And this is important: this is how we will advertise ourselves to the people. We are not allowed to give

out literature, but we can give candy with stickers about our Church. Therefore, we are asking for dona-

tions of bulk lollipops, that we will then ad stickers with our Church name, details and website. Between

the signage, the float, our people and the candy handouts, we are hoping to make a great impression on

our communities and invite a lot of people to Church! But we need LOLLIPOPS! If you can, just donate

them at the display in the foyer! Thank you!

Praising God: Baptisms & Dedications in May

There are two youth baptisms and two children's dedications happening at Cornerstone this

month! Baptism is one of the two sacraments of the Christian Church, where we are washed in water

and the Spirit, and infused with God's grace to become a member of the family of God! Children's dedication is a precursor to baptism, where the child is consecrated to God with the promise of a future

baptism when that child comes of age.

May 3rd at 9:00 am: Holy Baptism for Jena Stannard

May 10th at 9:00 am: Children's Dedication for Remme Pinkstaff

May 24th at 10:45 am: Children's Dedication for Joseph Murphy

May 31st at 9:00 am: Holy Baptism for Cara Marie Conforti

Praising God that we raised over $15,942 in offering for transportation for Pastor Joseph’s congregation! The monies will be sent soon toward the purchase of a bus or other transportation to safely transport their congregation on Sundays and throughout the week!

The Serve Team is excited to introduce a new ministry

opportunity to our congregation! Starting this Sunday,

April 26th, you will have an opportunity to sign-up to be

part of our new “Care Ministries!” This group will help

provide meals and transportation to members of our

church family who are experiencing illness, or

recovering from surgery or welcoming a new baby into

the family! As you may know, we currently have

several church members who are experiencing serious medical issues and may be in need of meals and/or rides

to doctor’s appointments, or even in some cases may

need companionship while they are recuperating. We

feel that Care Ministries will not only provide much

needed help to those who are hurting or recovering

from illness, but it will also help strengthen the bonds

of fellowship within our church family! Let us be a true

reflection of Christ to our church family. So please

consider helping with this important outreach, either by

sending an email to Carol Nohavec at carolno-

Testimony of how simple gifts mean the most

A client who we recently re-housed had to go to our

Community Caring Network to seek additional move-in

assistance. She interviewed with a church and said it was a

very encouraging meeting. A week or so later the case

manager received a bible in her mailbox with a post-it

note that said it was for the client from one of the be-

nevolence volunteers. The next time the case manager

saw the client she told her she had something to give to

her. When the case manager handed her the bible she

looked so surprised! She realized

what it was and said she had been

wanting one so badly! She soon

discovered that the volunteer took

the time to have her name engraved

on the front cover. The look on her

face was priceless. She was so joyful.

Almost looked relieved.

RIDES NEEDED

Today I visited Passage Point, an amazing facility south of Issaquah. Passage Point is a supportive community for parents re-entering the community after being in jail or prison, who would otherwise be homeless and who are re-uniting with their children. As their location is near the Cedar Grove composting facility and not convenient to public transportation hubs, they would like some help with getting to religious services. Can you make the need known to your congregation, especially if you have people coming from the area south of Issaquah, north of Maple Valley, and east of Renton. Those who are interested should call Passage Point at 425 270 9949 or email [email protected]. Let them know that you heard of the need through the Issaquah Sammamish Interfaith Coalition. Thanks!

UMCOR at Work after Earthquakes in Nepal

(from the United Methodist News service)

United Methodists joined Christians around the world in a prayerful response to the

earthquake that has claimed thousands of lives in Nepal and neighboring China and India.

BBC News reported the death toll at 4,000 people, with at least 7,000 injuries by

Monday evening as the Nepalese army and police undertook massive search and rescue

operations. Many were living in “vast tent cities” in the capital of Kathmandu as aftershocks

from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake continued.

Five missionaries working in Nepal for the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries

were reported safe.

The United Methodist Board of Global Ministries “has been in mission with the people

of Nepal a long time, and that is a great grace in this time of need,” says Thomas Kemper, the

board’s top executive.

In a joint statement, the World Council of Churches and the Christian Conference of Asia called churches around the world to pray for those affected by the earthquake and “extend

every possible support for humanitarian aid assistance in Nepal and other affected areas in the

neighboring countries.” The World Methodist Council also offered its prayers for the people

of Nepal.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief is planning to offer assistance through interna-

tional and local partners, including the United Mission to Nepal, a longtime church partner.

UMCOR approved a $90,000 grant April 27 to GlobalMedic, which will help earthquake

survivors access clean water by providing household and public water-filtration units.

To Donate toward UMCOR’s Relief Efforts in Nepal

Donations to support the response to the earthquake in Nepal and other international

disasters can be made online through UMCOR Advance # 982450. Visit www.umcor.org for

more information. Checks also can be made out to your local United Methodist church. Write

UMCOR Advance #982450 on the memo line and put in the offering plate.
