Dear Campus Bible Church,

We hope this will be a helpful guide for you this morning as we sing, pray and look at God’s Word together. Things are going to look a little different for us as we cannot currently meet together in person, but our desire is that we can still support each other and point each other to Jesus during this time.

The current situation is unfortunate, but we think it’s a great opportunity to support, encourage and serve one another in different ways. So as long as these circumstances persist, we hope you’ll use these Sunday morning times to gather with your family and worship God together.

Of course our plans may change Sunday to Sunday at this point, so please keep checking your emails and the church website for more information. This is a great opportunity to love one another and to praise the Lord regardless of our circumstances. Please reach out to to our pastoral staff and the rest of the Elders if you need anything, and we look forward to gathering once again soon.

“The Altar” Spoken Word Gloria Umanah

I’m standing here in the midst of tears Allowing shame and defeat to drown me in fear My sin Is suffocating me

Look God, I’m too dirty I’m filthy as swine I could never come close to perfection How could you ever call me, “mine”?

And (now) I know you’re not asking for perfection But Satan plays tricks on my mind And I can’t help but think of my sin from time to time It’s like my sin is on instant replay

But you tell me to pause and to remember what you did on that Third day Jesus you, rose from the grave And told death to excuse me Blotted out my sin and welcomed me in So youcould use me Use us

See church there’s no time to waste His arms have been extended This is the single reason Jesus Christ ascended So that even from His heavenly throne above He could have a personally relationship with you and me

So don’t ask what do I need to do? All the works been done. All you need to do is run to the Risen One Jesus Christ the Perfect Son The One who was and is and yet to come To the altar The price of our mistakes have been paid in full Jesus is here now and ready to make you new

Pastor Jim Cecy

“Where in the World is Jesus?”

Introduction: Our history books are filled with ancient mysteries… Did Jesus of Nazareth really die and if so, where is His body?

Matthew 28:6 “He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.”

As a believing Christian, how would you answer the many attempts that have been made throughout history to water

down the literal, bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ? It is either the greatest miracle or the greatest delusion ever recorded

in human history.

1 Corinthians 15:12-20 “Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain. Moreover, we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied. But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.”

“Faith in the resurrection is the very keystone of the arch of Christian faith, and when it is removed, all must inevitably

crumble into ruin.” (H.P. Liddon)

Acts 1:3 “Jesus showed Himself alive by many infallible proofs...”

Anyone in history producing a dead corpse of Jesus would have driven a sword into the heart of the Christian faith.

“Accordingly, if all the evidence is weighed carefully and fairly, it is indeed justifiable, according to the canons of historical

research, to conclude that the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea in which Jesus was buried, was actually empty on the morn of

the first Easter, an no shroud of evidence has yet been discovered in literary sources, epigraphy, or archaeology that would

disprove this statement.” (Dr. Paul Maier, former Professor of Ancient History at Western Michigan University)

I. THE UNBIBLICAL THEORIES

THEORY #1 - The Stolen Body Theory (cf. Matthew 28:1-4, 11-15) Question #1: Could they have stolen the body? Question #2: Would they have stolen the body?

“...a great number of [Christ’s] followers in the distant imperial capital believed so strongly in his resurrection that they

gave up their lives to Nero’s great persecution of A.D. 64.” (Tacitus, Roman Philosopher, 56-120 AD)

“It is still a good question. Men may lie when it suits their convenience, but will they cheerfully sacrifice their lives -- as

countless early Christians did -- in order to perpetuate what they know to be a hoax? Would you?…However incredible it

may seem in terms of what we know or think we know about the finality of human death, the story of the resurrection is

powerfully authenticated by the willingness of its witnesses to die rather than repudiate the truth of their testimony.”

(Article from the L.A. Herald Examiner)

“Maybe Jesus’ enemies stole the body.” (e.g. Judas, the Jews or the Romans)

Page 13: Pastor Jim Cecy - storage.snappages.site€¦ · Jim Cecy Senior Pastor/Teacher jim.cecy@campusbiblechurch.com Matt Cook Executive Pastor matt.cook@campusbiblechurch.com Gene Beck

“Maybe the disciples didn’t lie. What they saw was an hallucination or a vision.”

THEORY #2 - The Wrong Tomb Theory People simply made a mistake and went to the wrong tomb. (cf. Mark 15:47: Luke 23:55; Matthew 28:3-4; Mark 16:16)

THEORY #3 - The Swoon Theory The disciples only thought Jesus had died but Jesus really only fainted and was revived in the tomb.

e.g. The medical evidence

THEORY #4 - The Spiritual Resurrection Theory Christ rose spiritually and not physically. The bodily resurrection is both impossible and irrelevant.

What matters is that the disciples believed it really happened. We are to be more concerned about resurrection faith than

resurrection fact.

“A historical fact which involves a resurrection from the dead is utterly inconceivable” (Rudolph Bultmann, Kerygma and

Myth, p. 42)

Luke 24:39 “See my hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see what I have.”

THEORY #5 - The Lettuce Theory

The angel was really a gardener who was afraid that the disciples of Jesus would trample his lettuce plants, so he

announced that Jesus was risen to keep them away.

THEORY #6 - The Twin Brother Theory

Jesus had a twin brother who stole his body and then appeared to the disciples as the Risen Lord.

THEORY #7 - The Rapid Decay Theory

The humidity of the tomb caused the body of Jesus to completely decompose and disappear in three days. (Okay?)

THEORY #8 - The UFO Theory

Spacemen stole the body of Jesus (cf. Eric Van Donekan, Chariots of the Gods, 1970)

“Thinking themselves to be wise, they became fools.” (Romans 1:22)

II. THE UNDENIABLE TRUTH - 1 Corinthians 15:20 “But now Christ has been raised from the dead...”

“I have been used for many years to study the histories of other times, and to examine and weigh the evidence of those

who have written about them and I know no one fact in the history of mankind which is proved by better and fuller

evidence of every sort, to the understanding of a fair inquirer than the great sign which God hath given us that Christ died

and rose again from the dead.” (Professor Thomas Arnold, Chairman of modern history at Oxford University)

“I know pretty well what evidence is; and I tell you, such evidence as that for the Resurrection has never broken down yet.”

(Lord Lyndhurst, one of the greatest legal minds in history)

“As a lawyer I have made prolonged study for the events of the first Easter Day. To me the evidence is conclusive, and over

and over again in the High Court I have secured a verdict on evidence not nearly so compelling.” (Sir Edward Clarke)

“All that Christianity asks of men...is that they would be consistent with themselves; that they would treat its evidences as

they treat the evidences of other things...” (Simon Greenleaf, former Harvard professor of law)

III. THE UNAVOIDABLE OPTIONS The evidence of that empty tomb is shouting to the court of public opinion…

Acts 17:30-34 “…God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.” Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some began to sneer, but others said, “We shall hear you again concerning this.” So, Paul went out of their midst. But some men joined him and believed…” Option #1 - We can choose to sneer. Option #2 - We can seek to learn more. Option #3 - We can place our faith in this Risen One. Romans 10:9-10 “If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Option #4 - We can share our faith in the Risen Lord with confidence. 1 Peter 3:15 “…always being ready to make a defense (i.e. a solid legal defense) to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you…” One of the strongest evidences of an empty tomb is a full heart!

Discussion Questions: 1. Why is the literal, bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ important to the Christian faith (cf. 1 Cor. 15:12-20)?

2. If asked, what evidence would you give for the resurrection?

3. How does the proof of the resurrection stimulate you to share your faith with others?

4. List a few people for whom you are praying would come to have a personal relationship to the Crucified and

Risen Lord.

5. Name one person you will contact this week who you believe needs to hear the “gospel of hope”.
