S . M ’ F P N St. Mary’s Food Pantry has a few openings for volunteers. If you are interested in working a couple of hours a month on a Monday, meeting new parishioners, and participating in this wonderful Corporal work of Mercy.

T F O T Just two years ago, we engaged in one of the core activities of our democratic system: a presidential election. Actually, the institution of election can be traced to traditions in the Church, and although bishops are no longer chosen in this way, abbots and abbesses (heads of monastic communities) have almost always been elected by full voting members of their communities. The lifetime appointment begins when the monks or nuns are gathered in "chapter" at the death or resignation of the abbot, and fortunately for all involved, campaigning is not allowed! The members of the community discern, with prayer to the Holy Spirit, who among them is the best suited for leadership. Once chosen, the new leader requests the blessing of the local bishop, who usually presides at a ceremony of consecration or investiture. The ballots are always secret, and a simple majority must be achieved. In our American system the Electoral College is the determining voice in the presidential election, not the popular election on a November Tuesday, just as the monastic chapter is the electorate. Today, most religious orders elect general superiors in "chapter" by delegates of the professed members, and usually for a term of six years. A few, like the Jesuits, elect for life. God's laws are not intended to burden or torment us. Instead they are guideposts that point us in the direction of good living. Accordingly, good living requires loving God and loving one another. We should not follow God's laws out of fear of what might happen if we don't, but rather view them as a foundation for building relationships and trust with one another and with God. The Shema prayer of Orthodox Jews is based on the reading from Deuteronomy today, "Hear, O Israel." Every morning people recite the prayer as a profession of their love for God and pledge their obedience to God throughout the day. LLAMADOS A SER DISCÍPULOS La vocación central en el Evangelio según san Marcos es la vocación, o el llamado de ser discípulos. El pasaje del Evangelio de hoy nos brinda por lo menos un ejemplo de qué significa la vocación de ser discípulo y un ejemplo de lo que no significa. Una viuda pobre nos muestra que ser un buen discípulo significa seguir el camino de servicio de Jesús, incluso si implica entregar todo lo que tenemos para vivir (o incluso nuestra vida). Los letrados nos muestran con su mal ejemplo que ser un buen discípulo implica la vocación de hacer llegar el cuidado de Dios a los más necesitados. En nuestra lectura del libro de los Reyes otra viuda y su hijo corren peligro de morir. Ellos también entregan lo poco que tienen, pero son recompensados por Elías con comida suficiente para un año. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Antes de regresar a la derecha del Padre, Jesús prometió estar con sus discípulos siempre. Esta es una promesa que él ha mante-nido de diversas maneras, estando con nosotros por su Espíritu, por su palabra, en nuestro corazón. Pero Jesús también desea estar con sus siervos de una manera física y real, es por eso que en su Última Cena tomó pan y vino consagrándolos como su cuerpo y sangre. La Eucaristía que Jesús inauguró el Jueves Santo continúa consagrándose día tras día en las manos de sacerdotes santos y ni tan santos. No es la dignidad del cura que importa sino, la generosidad de Cristo que desea estar con sus fieles. Uno de estos fieles, el joven uruguayo Walter Elías Chango Rondeau, (1921-1939) en sus pocos años de vida encontró consuelo en el hecho de que Dios se entrega a sí mismo en la comunión. Según testigos, Walter animaba a sus compañeros a la reconciliación y la Eucaristía. Hablaba tan elocuentemente del Santísimo Sacramento, que parecía sacerdote. Día de Pre-Caná y Convalidación 17 de noviembre Pre-Caná es un retiro de un día para pa-rejas comprometidas que desean casarse en la Iglesia católica. El Día de Convalida-ción es un programa matrimonial educa-tivo para parejas que están casadas civilmente (fuera de la Iglesia católica) y que desean tener un matrimonio sac-ramental dentro de la Iglesia. Las parejas que estén con-siderando casarse deben obtener la aprobación de su párroco antes de asistir. Estos programas se combinan en un día para las parejas que hablan español. En este evento, se invita a las parejas a que pasen tiempo juntos reflexionando sobre su relación y futuro matrimonio. Es patrocinado por la Oficina de Vida Familiar diocesana.
