A Lot To LearnJesus said to his Apostles: No disciple is above

his teacher…: Matthew 10:24 ~ Karla Manternach

When I was young, my ambitions were vague but mighty. I wanted to be the world’s leading expert on something. I didn’t care what it was, so long as I was solely and indisputably right about something all the time. If I’ve achieved this ambition at all, it is only in spheres so small as to be meaningless. (Nobody ties my shoes as well as I do!) These days, however, instead of priding myself on everything I know, I take even greater pleasure in realizing how much I still have to learn. No matter how long I contemplate the heavens, the universe is more immense than I can imagine. No matter how much I pray, I will never fully understand the mind of God. No matter how often I read his Word, it always offers me something new. I praise God for all that is beyond my knowing!

Lord, let me sit at your feet and learn.

Crossing OverBut a Samaritan traveler who came upon

him was moved with compassion at the sight. Luke 10:33 ~ Sr. Chris Koellhoffer, I.H.M.

In this familiar parable, others also came across the person who had been robbed and beaten. Others also saw the injured one but remained on the opposite side of the road and went on their way. Only one saw a person in need, crossed to the other side to the place of suffering, bandaged the wounds of a stranger and gave of their reserves of time and resources for full healing.

So what is Jesus’ message here? I believe Jesus is telling us that love is responding with grace to the unexpected. That love is seeing the one right in front of us. That love is crossing over to the place of need.

Saint Of The Day˝Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American to be recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church. She was born in 1656, in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon. Her

mother was an Algonquin, who was captured by the Mohawks and who took a Mohawk chief for her husband.

She contracted smallpox as a four-year-old child which scarred her skin. The scars were a source of humiliation in her youth. She was commonly seen wearing a blanket to hide her face. Worse, her entire family died during the outbreak. Kateri Tekakwitha was subsequently raised by her uncle, who was the chief of a Mohawk clan.

Kateri was known as a skilled worker, who was diligent and patient. However, she refused to marry. When heradoptive parents proposed a suitor to her, she refused to

RESPECT LIFE Juanita Ruis, Respect Life Coordinator

National NFP Awareness Week JULY 21 - JULY 27, 2019

The Catholic Church supports the methods of Natural Family Planning (NFP) because they respect God's design for married love. In fact, NFP represents the only authentic approach to family planning available to

husbands and wives because these methods can be used to both attempt or avoid pregnancy.

The dates of Natural Fami l y P lann ing Awareness Week h igh l i ght the anniversar y of the papa l encyc l i ca l Humanae Vitae (July 25) which articulates Catholic beliefs about

human sexua l i ty, conjuga l love and respons ib le parenthood.  The dates also mark the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne (July 26), the parents of the Blessed Mother.  For fur ther in format ion , contact [email protected].

St. Kateri Tekakwitha (Continued)entertain the proposal. They punished her by giving her more work to do but she did not give in. Instead, she remained quiet and diligent. Eventually they were forced to relent and accept that she had no interest in marriage.

At age 19, Kateri Tekakwitha converted to Catholicism, taking a vow of chastity and pledging to marry only Jesus Christ. Her decision was very unpopular with her adoptive parents and their neighbors. Some of her neighbors started rumors of sorcery. To avoid persecution, she traveled to a Christian native community south of Montreal.

Kateri was very devout and was known for her steadfast devotion. She was also very sickly. Her practices of self-mortification and denial may not have helped her health. Sadly, just five years after her conversion to Catholicism, she became ill and passed away at age 24, on April 17, 1680.

According to legend, Kateri was very devout and would put thorns on her sleeping mat. She often prayed for the conversion of her fellow Mohawks.

Her name, Kateri, is the Mohawk form of Catherine, which she took from St. Catherine of Siena.

St. Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on Oct. 21, 2012. She is the patroness of ecology and the environment, people in exile and Native Americans.

“I promise you in the unfathomable mercy of my heart that my omnipotent

love will procure the grace of final penitence for all those who receive communion on nine successive first

Fridays of the month; they will not die in my disfavor [the grace of final repentance], or without having

received the sacraments, since my divine heart will be their sure refuge in

the last moments of their life.”~ catholic company.com

Our Lord appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alocoque, a French nun in the Visitation Order, and gave her the spec ia l t ask to spread devotion to His Most Sacred

Heart at a time when religion was growing cold in the hearts of mankind. Jesus asked for special prayers and practices to make amends (reparation) for this great neglect to proper reverence owed to God. For those who did this faithfully, he made what St. Margaret Mary referred to as the “Great Promise” which was the last and greatest of the Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
