PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
PAST TIMES – January 2013 Dear Members, To each of you I wish and hope for a very happy and healthy new year. I especially hope it will
be one filled with new discoveries. As we prepare for the New Year and MSOG’s 2013-2014
term of office, I thank each of you for the support you have given as MSOG moves forward.
Without you, your input and your volunteer efforts, MSOG would not be the Society it is today.
Yes, I’m feeling a bit nostalgic as I begin my third term of office because some of our board
members are leaving. However, I am looking forward to working with our new members on
the board who bring a wealth of expertise and especially new ideas. As we, your new board,
begin this term of office, we will hold our first board meeting on January 27, 2013. During this
meeting, we will do as the past board has done every year in January and that is to hold a ses-
sion to determine the goals and direction for this year. In addition to the board, I’m asking you
to participate by letting us know where you would like to see us direct our efforts. Please send
me your input so that it will be included in the session. We want you to participate. We look
forward to your ideas and suggestions. Send your input to [email protected].
The NERGC (New England Regional Genealogical Consortium, Inc.) conference is rapidly ap-
proaching. The conference will be held in Manchester, NH this year on April 17-21, 2012. To
read more about it or to take advantage of the early bird registration go to http://
www.nergc.org/about-nergc.html.
Happy New Year

Woven in History~The Fabric of New England
It’s not too late to take advantage of the “early-bird” rate for the eagerly anticipated New England Regional Genealogical Consortium (NERGC) conference to be held on April 17-21 in 2013, at the Radisson Hotel, Manchester, NH. To register and read more about the conference go to http://www.nergc.org/about-nergc.html. If you want a hard copy of the brochure, your chapter may have some left. If not, a PDF of the brochure is available on the website.
Sign up at the conference website for the E-Zine newsletter and follow the latest NERGC 2013 news. MSOG is a charter member of the New England Regional Genealogical Consortium and proud participant
in the 2013 conference. Our society participates in this bi-annual conference--along with other societies
and associations--to put on and run this all-volunteer New England conference.
It’s fun to volunteer at the conference. This is an opportunity to represent your Society, meet new people,
see friends, network with fellow genealogists and participate in what has become a tradition of running
the NERGC Conference.
NERGC CONFERENCE. To contribute your time at the conference or to learn more about volunteering,
contact Christine Bard, Chair of Volunteers at [email protected].
MSOG BOOTH. Officers, chapter presidents, and committee chairs will be needed at the MSOG Society
Booth (#703 in the exhibit hall) to speak with members and the public about MSOG. Contact Sharon
Christenson at [email protected] to schedule your slot.
LIBRARIANS’ AND TEACHERS’ DAY AT NERGC. To help publicize NERGC’s pre-conference event for Librari-
ans’ and Teachers’ Day contact Karen Trearchis at [email protected] or Pat Stano-Carpenter at
Under our NERGC participation agreement, MSOG agrees to comply with the requirements outlined be-
low. In return, our society receives a share of the proceeds from the conference. Many of these activities
will be familiar to you from reading Past Times and participating in past conferences.
Provide delegates to act as the Society’s representatives. Sharon Christenson has led the efforts of com-
pliance with the NERGC participation agreement. Other MSOG delegates to NERGC are: Carol Gafford,
Editor of Past Times and a member of the Bristol Chapter; John Hutchins, member of the Middlesex
Chapter; and Seema Kenney, Treasurer of the Worcester Chapter.
Publicize the conference to our members and others. Publicity efforts include placing information in our
newsletter and on our website, as well as on the MSOG Facebook page. In addition, brochures are cir-
culated at chapter meetings, local libraries, and other venues. With the newly available PDF brochure,
we are able to circulate this information via email to members of affiliated groups in Massachusetts.

Supply at least one volunteer for committee work--throughout the pre-planning phase and just prior to
the start of the conference. For the 2013 conference, this requirement is being fulfilled by Seema
Kenney, Treasurer of the Worcester Chapter, chairing Technology Day, and Karen Trearchis, Presi-
dent of the Merrimack Valley Chapter along with Patricia Stano-Carpenter, President of MSOG,
chairing Librarians’ and Teachers’ Day.
Provide on-site volunteer hours during the Conference. This is where we look to you, the members of
MSOG, to support your Society and to volunteer your time at the conference in such areas as regis-
tration, hospitality, introducing speakers, collecting evaluations, collecting meal tickets, etc.
Submit Society advertisements for the Conference syllabus. Sharon Christenson designed and submit-
ted the Society ads.
Sponsor a speaker for the conference. MSOG’s sponsored speaker for the 2013 conference is Michael
Brophy who will present, The 1940 Census: Chronicling the Great Depression into World War II.
Share equally in the financial distribution of any excess revenues created by the 2013 Conference, or in
the making up of any financial losses. The NERGC venture has proved lucrative for participating so-
cieties each year. As mentioned above, we look forward to sharing in the profits from this year’s
involvement.
Optional events/activities. MSOG participates in optional events at the conference. At the upcoming
conference in 2013, MSOG will have a booth in the exhibit hall to market the Society. Sharon Chris-
tenson has spearheaded this undertaking. Again, as indicated above, officers and chapter presi-
dents will be needed to [wo]man MSOG’s booth #703 in the Exhibit Hall. Email Sharon at schristen-
[email protected] to schedule your slot.

Web Browser Differences
The MSOG, Inc. Website may look slightly differently to you depending on what web browser you use. You can read the content from any web browser, but the more current browsers have more functionality and look prettier. According to our web statistics, more than 75% of our viewers are using current browsers but there are still some folks with older browser.
The browser is the software that lets you connect to and interact with web pages. For Windows computers the most common are Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Firefox. For Macintosh computers the most common software is Safari. Tablets and phones frequently have Safari or Chrome. Each of these updates their versions regularly. It is worthwhile to check periodically to find out which version you are using and whether there is a more current version. While many browsers will auto-matically update when it detects a new version, you can always check by looking at the About or Help tab. It will say if you are using the latest version or need to up-grade. Downloading the latest version is easy to do.
Below are snapshots of the website. Top right: iPhone view; Bottom left: view using
a current browser (either Safari, IE9, Firefox, Chrome); Bottom right: view using an
older browser —in this case, IE8. [IE8 is the last version you can use if your com-
puter is running Windows XP.]

The Flagon and Trencher Society:
Descendants of Colonial Tavern Keepers. (By Bernie Roback)
Flagon and Trencher, was founded in 1962. Those
persons, either male or female, who can prove direct descent from a person conducting a tavern, inn, ordinary, or other type of hostelry prior to 4 July 1776 can become members. In colonial times, tav-
erns, ordinaries, pubs and other hostelries were usually kept in a per-son's home and no other building existed for this purpose. Therefore,
the majority of the "taverns" as we think of them in that time probably did not have names. In smaller municipalities, taverns bearing names probably were not the rule. In larger ones the taverns sometimes had names to distinguish them. The key to estab-lishing membership is proving your ancestor was licensed by the local authority to conduct the business of keeping an ordinary, hostelry, inn or hotel or licensed to sell spirituous liq-
uors. The name of the establishment is not necessary. Brewers do not qualify.

It’s time for those New Year’s Resolutions and family historians have hundreds. My resolutions for
2013 include:
Getting organized
Keeping a Journal
Using the software I was given two years ago for Christmas
Using the software I won in a raffle at the annual meeting two years ago
Visiting older relatives and keeping a record of our conversations
Attending NERGC
Learn new ways to research online
Figure out Ancestry.com and make it work for me
Take more family photo’s and figure out what I have now
Keep names and dates on everything
Read more genealogy books and build my genealogy library
Do you have some goals for the new year? Let’s hear what they are. Send your list for the next
newsletter to the editor (Carol Gafford) at [email protected]
