IT’S 1939! 1939-2019
You are invited to celebrate the 80th anniversary of film’s greatest year!
With so many significant films to choose from, we had a hard time
narrowing down a list of films to show. This series represents the most
critically acclaimed films of 1939, earning recognition at the Academy
Awards. But don’t stop there! Seek out other timeless classics and learn
why 1939 is truly film’s greatest year.
Did you know…
1939 is the most represented year in the AFI’s “Most Memorable
Movie Quotes”? 1939 has 19 movie quotes in the list.
Gone With the Wind (1939) won 10 Academy Awards? It held the
record for most Academy Awards until Ben Hur won 11 Oscars in
1960.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) was considered a controversial
movie? It was banned by the Axis powers because it glorified
American ideals. Ironically, a few American politicians also sought to
ban the film for exposing political corruption in Washington DC.
“Over the Rainbow” was almost cut from The Wizard of Oz (1939)?
MGM Studio Head Louis B. Mayer considered the song too sad, but
the producers of the film argued for its inclusion. According to legend,
producer Mervyn LeRoy even threatened to quit his job if the song
was removed!
