    REAL!

More than 142,500 public sector jobs were cut

last year, according to recruitment consultant

Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Some 49,250

people working in education lost their jobs too.

The public sector cuts have continued this year, albeit at a slower rate, but the cuts in education

have continued to be particularly hard hitting at

18,246 so far this year they are almost twice the

    number of government cuts.

    CHAOS!

    Phones are ringing.

Kids outside in the yards and streets.

Pets joining them in their excitement that school in no more!

Some students will find happiness in their bedrooms with

TVs, games, cell phones, Ipads, computers, or maybe a good

book. Its similar to a snow day, yet cars may still get to their

    destinations.

Parents outside of these educational jobs will still have work

to attend. What will they do with their children that were just

yesterday attending the public school system?

We can all hold it together for a day, right? As time moves

from a day into a week, it starts to wear everyone down andtalk has begun about what the choices are now for education.

Arent we lucky to be in the todays world with technology as

we know it? We can find ways to continue to learn or teach

    without those buildings.

    Imagination is more

    important than

    knowledge. Knowledge

    is limited. Imagination

    encircles the world.

    So many options to consider:

    Home school?

    Private school?

    Online schools?

    Hire a teacher?

    Create small groups?

What would work best for your family?

There are many logistics to work out, but several

more choices exist than there used to be in the

    realm of educating your child.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE NOT CLOSING. I was

pulling a little Orson Wells on you to open your

minds. Breathe easy but continue with open

    minds!

Is it possible to combine some of the above ideas

with the current public schools to create a more

    individualized situation for children?

The number of homeschooler has risen 75%!

We know that the number of college students

participating in online learning has grown

tremendously. Nearly 6 millions post-graduates in

2012 are learning at online accredited colleges

    and univerisites.

What about Kindergarten 12th grade online

learning? Forty states have virtual schools or

state-led initiatives. Thirty states and DC have

statewide full-time online schools. Almost 2

million students are enrolled in distance-

education courses. Almost 300,000 are full-time

online-education students. Here is a great

informative piece by International Association for

    k-12 Online Learning:

Today you can blend types of education. Students

may attend a public school and take a class with

an online school that includes a teacher and tutor.

This is still so new that parents are leary. Here is

site to find answers to online education questions:

What about MOOC? UDACITY! Professors share

what they have learned about online learning.

    Be knowledgeable about educational options.

Call around and ask questions. Visit schoolsphysically as well as online. Talk to your public

and private schools, look into home schooling as

well as online education. This is your childs

education. What is best for that child? There are

too many options to not look outside the box!

Education in our times must try to

find whatever there is in students

    that might yearn for completion,

and to reconstruct the learning that

    would enable them to

    autonomously seek the

    completion.

When it comes to education, 21st century technology has never been so available and useful as it is

now. There are many exciting changes and innovations coming to the aid of educators and

homeschoolers. Many of the technologies becoming available are completely free to use. One of

the most useful of these free tools is Edmodo.

Edmodo is a social learning platform that allows you to create a virtual classroom in the cloud,

accessible anywhere there is an internet connection. It creates a secure learning environment that

gives you many powerful features and benefits. Most importantly, it is the easiest to learn platform

    we have used thus far.

Edmodo helps you organize your students into distinct groups and subgroups so that you can

control the ecosystem of each. You have the ability to create your own learning library of files, web

page links, pictures, and videos to use as resources for teaching. There is unlimited storage space

(100mb file size limit) for both you and your students files.

Edmodo allows you to create discussions, quizzes, alerts, polls, and assignments. It also works on

most smartphones as well, so a student doesnt necessarily need computer access to use Edmodo.

The exciting part is that it can be used by anyone, not just K-12 teachers. If you homeschool, you

can use Edmodo to organize all your educational resources and centralize the distribution of your

calendar and assignments. Creating a virtual classroom is a great way to allow your children to

continue learning on their own. They can take advantage of the vast wealth of knowledge on the

internet, but only through sites or content that you deem appropriate to share.

The internet is a wild place. There is an astounding amount of great content and knowledge, but

usually requires us to sift through a lot of junk to find it. With Edmodo, you can organize the chaos

of the internet by choosing which websites, articles, videos, etc to share in your virtual

classroom. Having a tool that allows educators to pick and choose which information and media to

share is very powerful. Edmodo allows you to create a cohesive set of knowledge out of varioussources that can basically become a personalized curriculum.

There are many more features of Edmodo that we invite you to explore. It is an incredible platform

and we believe its simplicity will be extremely helpful for you and your students.

Passion in Education is working hard to bring the knowledge of this great tool to teachers and

    homeschoolers everywhere.

Passion in EducationsTutorial section in Edmodo offers free lessons on how to use this great

    resource!

Go to Edmodo.com and sign up as a teacher to get started with your account. When you get to

your homepage, click the Join button under the word groups on the left panel of the screen. Then

type in code tjkhqd to join the Passion in Education Edmodo Tutorial Group. Feel free to ask any

questions you have on the discussion board and we will help you get started! If you get stuck,
