FORWARD FROM THE MAYOR OF St. NEOTS

When I was first asked to write this forward, I had just returned from attending Remembrance Sunday

Services. These services are held so that we can remember all those who gave their lives for us in the two world wars and in all conflicts since.

I was particularly drawn to the following words spoken at the Memorial Service,

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.”.

And that, for me, is what the Passion Play is also about. Easter is the time when we remember that a very special person Jesus of Nazareth laid down his life on our behalf, to atone for our sins so that we may live forever in the Kingdom of God.

I recall that it is also said that man has no greater love that he lay down his life for another. So let us all remember the sacrifice made for us at this special time of the year.

Please come along and view the performances which will be held at various locations in the Town as this is a reminder of the many sacrifices made on our behalf throughout history, the most recent being the loss of military lives in Afghanistan and the Earthquake disaster in Haiti.

ABOUT THE St. NEOTS PASSION PLAY

On Friday April 14th 2006, BBC3 tried an experiment... they broadcast the story

of Christ’s Passion live from Manchester City Centre. Performed by actors and members of local churches and incorporating music from local bands, it proved to be a wonderful event, bringing all sections of the community together.

“Wouldn’t it be great if we could do something similar in St. Neots?”

There have been plenty of occasions when I wondered at the wisdom of my throwaway comment! What started as a jocular aside led to a serious discussion at a St. Neots Christian Performing Arts meeting, and – eventually - resulted in a presentation before St. Neots Town Council in February 2009.

Then came the research... the visits to Bury-St-Edmunds and Winchester to learn from their experiences and the beginning of a never-ending series of meetings at which support was sought (and gained) from local councils, local churches and local community groups.

In discussion with Allan Dixon, Val Corrigan and others, it quickly became clear that this would be an event that was completely outside our ‘comfort zone’. Although CPA have been performing in the Priory Centre and local churches for 10 years, we had never before staged a production split over five different sites; or one in which a proper dress rehearsal was impossible to do... especially since the stages couldn’t be built until 3 hours before the show!

And yet, the challenge to portray the events of the first Easter in an authentic but entertaining and contemporary manner kept moving us onwards. The enthusiasm for the project from so many people kept strengthening us during the times when endless risk assessments, meetings and logistics seemed to weigh us down!

Writing these notes now – a few weeks before the production, unsure of what the finished event will look like – is quite unnerving. There is so much still to be done, yet I am confident that the faith, goodwill and hard work that has brought us thus far will bring us through to April 4th.

The scale of the production has increased greatly over the last twelve months: first actors, singers, dancers and then school choirs, Roman soldiers and donkeys, but at each step of the way the resources required have – with God’s help - somehow appeared.

The incredible generosity shown by so many people – and particularly by the churches of our town – has been inspiring, and we have been moved by the way in which so many local people have grasped our vision for an event touching the whole community.

Page 6: PASSION 2010 Souvenir Programme

6

ABOUT THE ST. NEOTS PASSION PLAY

The production has always had four distinct aims:

To tell the story of the first Easter•To encourage Christians in their faith•To increase the sense of community within the town•And to show visitors what a remarkable place St. Neots is!•

My prayer today is that we will do justice to each of these objectives.

That many people will be moved and inspired by the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made; that the wonderful variety of churches we have in this town will be strengthened as a result of the play; that the event will help bind our community and that many people who are visiting St. Neots for the first time will want to come back again! Do enjoy your afternoon, and may the experience of Christ’s Passion bless you richly this Easter.

THE CAST

Geoff Unwin (Jesus Christ)Geoff was a member of Potton Playhouse for many years when he and his family lived in Potton, and he appeared in a number of shows and plays from ‘The Lion’ in The Wizard of Oz, to leading parts in Lady Windermere’s Fan, Ten Times Table, a number of comedy roles in Ayckbourn classics and in one of his more obtuse roles as Pozzo in Waiting for Godot.

Geoff was also heavily involved in the Passion Play staged in Potton in the 1980’s. Geoff has also appeared in shows and plays for St. Neots Players since moving to live here, including : Outside Edge, Dad’s Army, Hello Dolly and The Secret Garden. Geoff is honoured and enthused to be playing the role of Jesus in this first Passion Play to be staged in St. Neots.

Phil Collins (Simon Peter)Although a Brummie born and bred, Phil has lived in the St. Neots area for over 20 years now and is an active member of St. Mary’s Church, Eaton Socon. Over the years he has directed and appeared in many productions for local amateur drama groups VAMPS and St. Neots Players.

Colin Webber (John)Colin has lived and worked in the St. Neots area for over 20 years and is a member and lay preacher at Berkley Street Methodist Church. Apart from a love of sport, he has dabbled in amateur dramatics with the CPA, St. Neots Players and St. Neots Vamps, specialising in non-speaking cameo roles!

Jane Gill (Mary the Mother)Jane has been involved in CPA productions since ‘Here and Now’ in 2006, when she played a bride and a housewife, and has also been a member of the CPA committee since 2007.

She also played a very excited ‘Deal or No Deal contestant’ at the Mayor’s open air Carol Concert in 2008, and is delighted to be able to take part in the Passion 2010. Jane is a member of St. Neots Parish Church.

David Gower (Judas)David and his wife, Sarah, only moved to St. Neots last year when Sarah became curate at St. Neots Parish Church. For the previous ten years they lived in Whittlesford where David was a churchwarden.

David performs with Cambridge Operatic Society and most recently played Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. He is Deputy Head of Chigwell School in West Essex and, therefore, knows the M11 quite well now, usually making it back just in time for choir practice on a Friday evening.

THE CAST

Marina Jordan Rugg (Mary Magdalene)Marina Jordan-Rugg is a journalist, living in Sandy with her husband Terry and children Layla and Zachary. She has attended St. Neots Evangelical Church for 37 years. Marina has been involved in drama productions at school, university and church, on the stage, in the choir and orchestra and as a make-up artist.

Previous roles include Head Girl Clare in ‘Daisy Pulls it Off ’ with the St. Neots Players and the Virgin Mary for CPA’s 2006 Christmas production held in St. Mary’s Church Eaton Socon.

Kevin Webb (Annas)This is Kevin’s first Passion play although he has done almost every other type of play, his favourite type being Pantomime which he appears in each year.

In 2010 so far he has appeared in a Panto in Swavesey, a performance in All Saints Church, Huntingdon, depicting life and times in the 17th Century and a Jeffrey Archer who-dun-it in Brampton.

He has also just started rehearsals for Shakespeare at the George in Huntingdon, where he has performed for the last 5 years.

Clive Rambart (Caiaphas)Clive is married to Sara and they both attend the Open Door Church in St. Neots. Before marriage, he regularly performed in productions for the Harpenden Methodist Players and Stable Rock an interdenominational theatre group.

Nicholas Berry (Pilate)Nicholas attends the St. Neots United Reformed Church, where he is part of the leadership team. He has lived in St. Neots all his life; although he has studied drama, this is his first major part in a production.

His main hobby is Gilbert and Sullivan, (although he claims that the quality of his voice means he is limited to watching and listening!)

Amy Law (Narrator)Amy is part of St. Neots Evangelical Church. As well as being part of the church family there, she also enjoys being part of the youth work team.

Other CPA productions which Amy has been involved in include ‘Cargo’, which commemorated William Wilberforce’s work to end the slave trade.

TITLE 1 THE STORY SO FAR

The scene: Jerusalem, approx AD 29. For 3 years, a carpenter called Jesus has been travelling round the country, preaching

a message of love, forgiveness and salvation. He has come from a humble background, born in a small village called Bethlehem and brought up in Nazareth. But his fame has spread throughout the country. Crowds come in their thousands to hear him preach and to see him perform many miracles.

Many regard him as the ‘Messiah’ the one who has come to lead the Jewish people and shake off the yoke of Roman domination in the country. Some regard him as a threat, a revolutionary who has come to disrupt the existing order and expose the comfort and hypocrisy of the religious leaders of the time. And there are those who are convinced that he is all this and so much more; indeed, some who claim he is the very Son of God himself.

For months, Jesus has been planning for the time when he would reach Jerusalem, the centre point of the Jewish faith. But whilst most celebrated his arrival, some quietly plotted, determined that Jesus would not draw people away from their current religious practices.

For differing reasons, all waited upon his arrival into Jerusalem with anticipation, but none realised that the following seven days would change the course of human history, and that the world’s concept of life and death, love and salvation would be changed for all time.

Join us on the Town Bridge as we await his arrival into Jerusalem...

change the course of human

history

THE PRODUCTION TEAM

Val CorriganVal is a member and Elder of the United Reformed Church. Originating from Northern Ireland, she became involved in the local performing arts and this has continued for many years.

She has supported VAMPS, St. Neots Players and SIMADS in St. Ives. Her involvement with Christian Performing Arts over the last ten years has culminated in the putting on of The Passion on the streets of St. Neots on Easter Sunday 2010.

Allan DixonAllan is a committee member of St. Neots Players and has stage managed many of their productions. He has also stage managed most of the CPA productions, starting with ‘Hopes and Dreams’ in 2000 and culminating with this year’s Passion Play, where he has the added challenge of managing not just one stage for this show, but 5 different ones, spread all the way around town!

Simon CooperSimon has worked on many of CPA’s previous productions, helping to direct ‘Hopes and Dream’ and ‘Cargo’, and writing a ‘Time for Everything’. He has loved working on this project, even though he has often scolded himself for agreeing to take the challenge on! Simon is a member and lay preacher at Berkley St. Methodist Church, loves puzzles and murder mysteries and is a long suffering supporter of West Ham.

Joyce BrownHaving studied music at Trent Park College London and becoming an Associate of the Royal College of Music for piano teaching, Joyce was appointed head of Music at Oakwood Secondary School, London, then Riseley Middle School and finally Dean Grange School, Upper Dean. She has been responsible for the organ/piano playing at St. Neots Evangelical Church for almost 40 years.

Since the inception of the CPA she has been musical director for the original performance of ‘Hopes and Dreams’ up to the most recent ‘Cargo’. She says it has been great to work with the many churches in the town in the Passion Play with her husband, both children and granddaughter also participating.

THE PRODUCTION TEAM

Jenny CooperJenny has choreographed the dance for many of CPA’s previous productions, including Hopes and Dreams, Time for Everything and Cargo. She has enjoyed the challenge of coordinating the dance in this Passion Play, and is very grateful to Jan, Pheobe and Emma for all their help. Jenny is a member of Berkley Street Methodist Church, and is a local teacher and historian, with many years experience in event management.

Jan WebberJan is a member at Berkley Street Methodist Church and has been involved with CPA since their first production Hopes and Dreams. She has also been a member of St. Neots VAMPS for 12 years, and has helped choreograph shows as well as playing many roles. She hopes The Passion will touch your hearts and help to make this Easter a special time.

Emma GillEmma is currently studying for her A Levels at Longsands College. She has been involved in CPA since the 2006 production of ‘Here and Now’ and has been involved in Christmas performances as both a dancer and choreographer. She was also involved in the production of ‘Cargo’ in 2008, primarily as a dancer but also helped to choreograph some of the dances.

Phoebe WebberPhoebe is a member at Berkley Street Methodist Church and has danced in many CPA productions, but is now making her choreography debut. She has also danced with AJ’s Academy (ballet, modern, street and tap) for 12 years and is a long-standing member of St. Neots VAMPS, so has been treading the boards since before she can remember.

Jenny BirdJenny was born in a village in Essex, and was a Sunday School teacher and confirmed into the Church of England. She is married to Rodney, with two daughters and three grandsons.

She works part-time and is an elected member of St. Neots Town Council. Her experience of local government has meant that Jenny has managed all the logistics for the Passion Play (no easy task!)

St. Neots Christian Performing Arts... 10 years on

In February 1999 a group of Christians from local churches got together having been challenged to put on ‘Hopes and Dreams’,

a Christian musical for the new millennium based on the words of the Lords Prayer.

Led by Lindsay Townley and Ann Garner, a large team was built up from local churches, the Players and VAMPS to put on this ambitious production and the Priory Centre was booked for a whole week in June 2000. The show had a cast of over 100 people and exceeded all expectations.

The four performances were nearly all sold out, and the show received great critical acclaim. Furthermore, those who had taken part in the play loved the whole experience, and were very keen to ensure that the event wouldn’t be a ‘one-off ’, so - during the post production party – a suggestion was made to form a Christian drama group comprising members from all the different churches in the town.

Hence, the St. Neots ‘Christian Performing Arts’ group was created, with an objective to portray the Christian message through the media of drama, dance and music. All churches in town were invited to be represented, and the group was formed with Ann Garner (and later Val Corrigan) as Chair. The group worked on different levels – helping and supporting local churches through drama in worship; by staging special Christmas events and by staging larger productions in the Priory Centre.

The first of these was ‘Time for Everything’ (2002) which incorporated a series of sketches, dances and songs loosely built around the famous passage in the Book of Ecclesiastes . . . ‘A Time for Everything’. This was followed in 2004 by a production of ‘Here and Now’ in the Priory Centre, and in 2006 by a production of ‘Follow That Star’ in St. Marys Church Eaton Socon.

2008 saw the CPA return to the Priory Centre for a week of performances of ‘Cargo’, a moving musical by Paul Field examining the roots of slavery, which was put on as part of the commemorations for the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade.

Following ‘Cargo’, there was a discussion as to what type of challenge we should next consider... and that leads us on to today!

The group has continued to grow, with increased representation from greater number of churches. If you are interested in becoming involved with CPA in the future, we’d love to hear from you. Please call the Chair, Val Corrigan, on 01480 213682 or Simon Cooper on 01480 471123.

For our church the Passion of Christ is the supreme outpouring of God’s love for humanity - love that suffers and then overcomes complete rejection - love that is totally spent but endlessly renewed. ‘Here is God, whose arms of love aching, spent, the world sustain.’

Christ died for our sins and rose again. This is the very heart of the Christian faith. It changes everything for us. God accepts us, not because of what we do, but because of what Christ has done. This is where we find love, joy, peace and hope. Amazing!
