//IBIZA PARTYSAN ISLAND

After its launch last season Partysan Ibiza Magazine celebrates its 1st birthday this summer and we are looking back on many exciting moments, a lot of creative production stress and incredibly positive feedback from readers, locals and business partners. Nobody would have imagined how much such a pocket magazine was missing in Ibiza. And even more, it amazed us how essential the party calendar became for islanders and visitors. With such a large number of clubs, parties and events every night (and every day) during the summer, it was more than necessary to provide a comprehensive guide about what’s going on in Ibiza, where, and when.

Our aim as Partysan Ibiza Magazine is to provide all the fresh news from the music island in the most authentic way, and we are very pleased that towards the end of each month people eagerly start asking when the next issue will be out. Already last year was a huge success for our team, and highly motivated we started the new season. Although we print 30,000 copies every month, it seems that this summer as soon as they were brought to the shops and outlets they were gone within hours. The great success of last and this season fills us with gratitude!

Maybe some of you have been confused with the appearance of another little magazine this summer which looked very similar to ours. Interestingly it had exactly the same format as Partysan Ibiza Magazine (105 x 148 mm) and its title contained some identical letters as “P”, “R” and “T” - so to some people it seemed like an imitation of our mag. We appreciate the apparent interest in our ideas and the efforts to jump on a train by copying our magazine’s concept. Dear readers, if you know Ibiza, you know us, and we are… P...A...R...T...Y...S...A...N!

Now the summer closing parties are around the corner and we look back at 4 fantastic Partysan Ibiza issues, each issue a unique gift for many visitors to Ibiza. We regularly receive requests from people around the world to have Partysan Ibiza Magazine to be sent to them. We’re sorry that this is not always possible - just imagine the high postal costs to Colombia - without being sure that the mail will ever arrive. Better you just go online! All issues of Partysan Ibiza Magazine are available on www.my-ibiza.net and of course for free download on www.partysan.net!

What you hold here in your hands is the final issue of the summer, and we are happy about how well things have gone. We are glad that now we find some time to spend on the beaches of this beautiful island! We thank our team and business partners for their loyalty, as well as the many volunteers

and of course our readers and fans for their response. If you want to send us your opinions about the magazine please feel free to write down your thoughts and email them to [email protected]! We look forward to meeting up next year!

At the last minute we got some fabulous news: Partysan International has been named as official media partner of the Amsterdam Dance Event, the biggest electronic festival and conference in Europe! Wow, this is a real compliment to us and rounds out a perfect summer. Our team will be at the ADE end of October; read more about it on page 20.

After the conference we are looking forward to jump into a fantastic winter and our schedule is filled with some cool international Partysan events and festivals. We want to invite you to join us in November when Partysan presents Sven Väth at the Carl Benz Arena in Stuttgart (Germany), at the famous Partysan Raveonsnow winter festival in Saalbach (Austria) in December or at the trip to Koh Phangan (Thailand) in March for the legendary Partysan Thaibreak. You can win a trip to each of these events, including travel, hotel and free access, just email to [email protected] and we will keep you updated!

But now let’s first enjoy the last weeks of a wonderful summer season in Ibiza. There is always a reason to celebrate, especially since we heard that the crew of Circoloco is planning two parties in October at our beloved DC10. So many rumours were going around if DC10 would open again at the end of the season. If yes (and we really-really-really hope it from the deepest bottom of our hearts!!!), we will see you on the dance-floor on the 5th and the 12th of October!

And talking about rumours, an email from Pepe Roselló, owner of Space, reached us moments before going to press, stating: “Regarding the existing rumours about Space closing and becoming a commercial centre, Space Ibiza informs the general public that this intoxicating news is completely false. They are created by our competitors with the sole malicious purpose of disorienting the general public. Thank you for your loyalty and confidence.”

// INTERVIEW WITH... Since how long are you coming to the island and how would you describe Ibiza to someone who has never been here before?Since 1999 I am coming regularly to Ibiza in the summer. And I would describe it as a place where you are closer to the music than at the most other classical holiday locations. The combination between sun, beach, fish, house music and party-life is pretty unique.

Does Ibiza influence your work as an artist and producer? In which way do you find inspiration here? Of course it inspires me a lot. There is all over the year ideas which I save just for the summer months in Ibiza. There is a certain hypnotic aspect in some tracks which are “just made” for Amnesia’s terrace or some crazy pool parties. I think Ibiza is dedicated to a certain feeling in music.

Do you agree with some people who say that Ibiza is a magical place? Did ever anything magical happen to you here?This question is a bit too much for me. I am not very esoteric.

Page 9: PARTYSAN Magazine

Is it the atmosphere, the cosmopolitan young crowd, the sun and the sea, or what else do you think is so special for a DJ to play here?I think for DJ’s its quite important to play here because most party promoters from the world are hanging out at least for a couple of weeks on the island in the summer. So it‘s good to play and try to stick in their memories after the summer. Then you will have bookings.

What’s your sound of this summer and which productions do you feature most?House is back, for me now almost too much. A lot of filter-action and sound which I know from my early Ibiza experiences. Sometimes it‘s a time warp 2009 > 1997. But also music with Spanish vocals is very popular at the moment. Even ex-progressive artists are doing this right now which should be an alarm sign! For me at the moment the new releases of Luciano‘s Cadenza imprint are reaching the highest quality level, they are very musical and perfect for being played in Ibiza.

If you look back on the development of the island in the last years, do you think there are some aspects of music that have changed? Yes, not so much shitty trance and stupid progressive anymore, isn‘t it wonderful? Or do you miss it?

How do you see the current situation with the new laws on opening hours?A tiring issue! Unfortunately Spain has turned into a pretty un-liberal police country which now, especially in Catalonia, has very strict rules. But nevertheless I’ve had a lot of fun in Ibiza, had several very good after-parties and even played on the beach. So there are still places where you can find it.

Basically everywhere in the world people usually go out on the weekends and in the night-time. Ibiza is different; you can party also during the week. What could be another reason why many young people choose Ibiza for their holiday? Because you need at least one alternative to Berlin‘s nightlife.

What are the main differences for DJ’s and clubbers in terms of party culture between the big German capital and this little Mediterranean island?More hot chicks in Ibiza!

Do you think parties have a cultural and social function?Yes, meeting as many hot chicks as possible and making a culture out of it like my buddy Marco!

In Berlin it’s possible to party “all around the clock” for those who want. It seems that there are no restrictions for party lovers. Do you think with the new laws that Ibiza has lost a bit of its party qualities?I think if you would do the same in Ibiza than in Berlin, it would lose its beauty. You could see this in the years between 2004 and 2008 when a certain party became very successful, which was almost unlimited, the crowd changed completely and suddenly we had aggression and even fights on some parties. So I think a certain limitation is good for the quality of the crowd.

Do you think Ibiza should have a big open-air festival like many other places in the world?Yes there should be more big festivals, at least for one week in the season like the Amsterdam Dance Event or the Sonar. Don’t forget in 2000 they had a festival “Ibiza the Rock” in a valley close to St. Antonio. I was there and it was great!

What’s on your studio agenda, on which productions you are working right now?I am working on an album which probably will be finished in 2015 and I am working together with my mate Matthew Styles on tracks for our project eMT. Also I just did a new mix CD for my home label Cocoon together with my friend Onur Özer for the Green & Blue festival. And I am writing country songs on my guitar, very nice by the way!

Thank you very much and see you soon!You are welcome!

// FILTHY GORGEOUS

Filthy Gorgeous is widely known as an underground party brand in Ibiza and London. The parties are promoted by a trio of vet-eran Ibiza workers, who have all earned their stripes promoting parties not just on the White Isle. Their trademark “deep, tech house and techno” has also taken them as far afield as Aus-tralia, Asia and Mexico. But it is really Ibiza they call “home”. Having hosted parties in various locations across the island, including Privilege, Space, Eden, pri-vate villas and other unusual locations, Filthy Gorgeous have made their reputation as serious party people. Main resident DJ’s are Scott Martin (also a We Love resident) and Jamie Gittins who have both been making their own waves in the scene too. After the success of last year’s parties with Carl Cox at Space, the Filthy Gorgeous team this summer returns for another appearance at Space in September, hosting the intimate El Salon with their deep and filthy tunes.

FILTHY GORGEOUS IS HOSTING EL SALON AT SPACE ON TUESDAY, 15TH SEPTEMBER.

// NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND

Something you should not miss if you are on the island in October is the legendary annual closing party of The Under-ground. Traditionally this is the final party of the season - and it is also the last chance to meet summer friends. Many of the workers who are spending their last days of the summer on the island come to celebrate the ending of the season, at the same time it’s the last chance to catch the lovely spirit of this magical place, and the great music.

During the season the well-loved residents Don Juanito and Justin Field amazed us with their sound and also their guests like Nima Gorji, Rhadoo, System of Survival, Matthias Tanzmann, Luc Ringeisen, Valentino Kanzyani and Guy Gerber who served the decks at Underground this summer. If you ask yourself now why you didn’t take notice about this before? Insiders know that you never see any Underground posters and flyers because everyone is free to discover the place whenever he or she wants, and free to decide if he or she likes it. The answer is: THE PARTY IS YOU! It’s simply the people who go to Underground who make the party. All guests are special but treated equally. It’s the real Ibiza spirit of the old finca with the lovely garden terrace and you will always meet a cool mix of islanders, tourists and season workers.

Underground is always worth going to. Guests say they love it because of the emotional atmosphere. The heads behind Underground are not the type of guys who use the expres-sion “underground” as a mere marketing tool, or a clever strategy to draw the crowd to the venue. Underground is probably the most authentic place for underground music in Ibiza. Even when they have some of the biggest names spinning the decks they are not shouting it from the rooftops. It’s the phenomenon of word-to-mouth and a lovely, sincere aura that brings the people to the venue. And that’s what makes the parties even more exciting.

THE CLOSING PARTY TAKES PLACE ON 7TH OCTOBER AND WE ADVICE YOU TO BE THERE EARLY.

UNDERGROUND (SANT RAFEL) IS OPEN EVERY DAY (EXCEPT SUNDAYS) FROM 23:00. THE ENTRY IS FREE AND THE NIGHTS ARE ALWAYS SPECIAL, SO JUST GO AND CHECK IT OUT!

HOW TO GET THERE: Following the main road from Eivissa to San Antonio, after passing Amnesia, you will see on the left hand side a black sign with a big white “U” on it. At the next roundabout, make a U-turn and drive back a few metres, then just make a right and follow the signs to the parking.

// SVEN VÄTH AND THE STORY OF COCOON

THE PASTSven Väth first came to Ibiza at the age of 16. That was back in 1980, and at the time it was hip to dance in San Antonio’s Extasis (today Boho). Even then he had a strong affinity for dance music. His parents operated a discotheque in Germany and he was, so to speak, "nurtured with disco music." The first parties on the island Sven organized long time before he started Cocoon, namely it was in 1989 when he promoted his Omen parties at Ku (now Privilege). At that time Sven had already been dj’ing in almost all of the clubs on the island. It was the world-changing period when the Berlin Wall fell and the time of the Love Parade: "For me these were emotional moments in history, and this was so much reflected in the music”. The decision to start the Cocoon parties at Amnesia in 1999 was a risky one, and the first years were really hard financially. Times change, and Cocoon became a real success story: "You need more than just a vision to start a project like this but also entrepreneurial awa-reness. Intuitively I did the right steps, and as a self-taught business person I developed logically. It’s important that you learn at the right time to combine the right things".

THE PRESENT“Ibiza and Cocoon are essential parts of me. Already in winter and in spring I feel the antici-pation for the summer, and I’m totally excited every year coming back to Ibiza. The attrac-tion of the island is still very strong. Here I have spent my youth, and the circle is completed now. The island is giving me back this special spirit. I would like to transmit to people what the island means to me: trust, tolerance and openness, the freedom to flourish, and always new developments in the music and party culture”. Today Sven is looking back on nearly 30 years of experience as a DJ. He is the boss of an internationally operating company with about 120 employees. "All this became reality only through hard work, discipline and diligence, and all of our team love and live this approach". Cocoon nowadays safely can be considered one of the leaders in the niche of electronic music - truly a global player in the industry.

THE FREAKS"I'm a freak who knows what he wants”, says Sven. His definition of a freak: “A freak is someone who fully approves a certain vision, and follows this vision dedicated and with a high degree of professionalism. Of course it also means to accept all the consequences. It’s worth it being a professional freak! What is most important is the right approach, and you have to be absolutely sure about your dream, don’t look at what others are doing or saying. Be a trendsetter. My job is working hard to drive you crazy. The source of my ener-gy is my heart. I'm an entertainer, this is my profession, and I love it. I could not imagine doing something else, and therefore I see myself as an ambassador of cultures, connec-ting people all around the world”.

THE DRUGS "I don’t mind excessive partying, but what’s going in Ibiza is too much, it seems that re-cently the vibe has turned into a destructive mood. People take a lot of stuff, and I really think something has to change. For such people I wouldn’t make music. My music is con-structive and inspiring, and I hope that with what I’m doing I can be a positive role model. I love to see people smiling. That's what I'm here for, and my music is the key, definitely you don’t need the drugs”.

THE FUTURE "Ibiza would be better than ever if the island’s government recognizes the role of the sub-cultural sector for the economy. All the big players from the electronic music industry are here because they believe in the island. They continually invest in their projects and create jobs in Ibiza. Unfortunately, in Ibiza still reigns a bit of the pirate mentality and not everything is transparent. Also the government should raise the is-sue of mobility and public transport and find better solutions for this. That would be a big step towards more quality for the tourists, and the clubbers. Also a festival would be great, organized together by all the clubs and the island’s labels. The young people today want to discover something new. I definitely don‘t agree with the pessimists, I truly believe in the 'new' Ibiza”.

THE MESSAGE"Just always go on! Life is good, and it's worth it!"

THANK YOU SVEN! YOU ARE WONDERFUL!

//AMSTERDAM DANCE EVENT

The annual Amsterdam Dance Event is one of the key events in the music industry calendar. Taking place from 21st to 24th Oc-tober, the ADE attracts an audience of 90.000 electronic music lovers and 2.000 music professionals from around the globe. During the four days of the festival over 700 DJ’s and live acts will perform in 40 different venues. ADE is now recognized as the biggest international gathering of the electronic music scene with representatives from record labels, agencies, festivals, managers and artists descending on the city of Amsterdam to stay in touch with the international scene and new developments.

“Amsterdam Dance Event is like a tapas bar where you get a lot of small snacks at one place. Because all DJ’s at ADE play for just an hour or so, you get a preview of a lot of dif-ferent kinds of electronic music at one event”, says Armin van Buuren who will be playing alongside Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin, Boys Noize, Freemasons, Deadmau5, Fedde le Grand, Brian Sanhaji, Funkerman, Groove Armada, John Acquaviva, Joris Voorn, Karotte, Oliver Huntemann and Pete Tong just to name a few. “Without a shadow of a doubt this is the most relevant business orientated conference in the world”, remarks Mark Knight from Toolroom Records, and Judge Jules from BBC Radio 1 agrees: “The only dance conference to combine great parties with genuine business opportunities”.

ADE TAKES PLACE FROM 21ST TO 24TH OCTOBER IN AMSTERDAM.

//GUISEPPE OTTAVIANI

Giuseppe, you’ve been playing Cream at Amnesia since 3 years, and already 3 times this summer! Can you compare the Ibiza ex-perience to other live shows?I can’t really compare the Ibiza atmosphere to others. Actually I can’t compare a single show to another since each place has an own vibe and crowd. But I have my favourite places and Ibiza is one of them! I played there many times and I still feel so nervous and excited before the show as if it was my first time!

The last gig at Amnesia is the launch of your solo debut artist album GO! Please describe the sound of Giuseppe Ottaviani - what can we expect?My sound is full of melodies and energy. The album also features my first own vocal produc-tions and some techno tracks! I tried to show all different facets, powerful instrumental tracks, beautiful vocal songs and even my darker side found its place on the record. The first and last track on GO! are quite unusual for me, but this gives a special edge to the album, keeps it inter-esting and provides a nice balance.

Where does your inspiration come from?Everything can be an inspiration to me. Trav-elling, playing and listening to music, tides of events and experiences - whatever happens in life will be found in my sound. I’m very much

influenced by the environment and the weather, too. And lucky enough to live in a sunny place where I can see the beach and the sunset from my studio. That’s really important for me!

You are a live act, not a DJ. What makes the difference to you?Playing live is something that really touches me. I’m completely interacting with the crowd, their reaction influences my sound a lot, and in real time. The stage allows me to be closer to the audience, closer then being behind a DJ booth. I feel more like a musician than a DJ. Performing my own music live has more of a concert char-acter. Seeing people right in front of me - jump-ing and screaming to my productions - is the biggest and most important satisfaction. It tells me I’m doing it right, it gives me the confidence to go ahead with my music.

What’s your essential Ibiza to-do recommen-dation?Ibiza is mostly known as party island so I wish everyone as much fun as possible! But please in a healthy way - and get some relaxation on the beautiful Ibiza beaches, too. See you there soon!

//SELECTED SUMMER SOUVENIRS

Pacha VIP III is a triple CD trip through the catalogue of Pacha Recordings across the main room dance-floor, af-ter-hours and poolside-terrace gems. This new volume is set to continue where the successes of Pacha VIP Volume I and II left off which both been sold out completely. Pacha

“Black” is mixed by New York-based producer Jorge Jaramillo who shows the after-hour’s side of Ibiza, dark, twisted and little moments of morning sunlight; Pacha “Blue” shows the uplifting, soulful and vocal vibes, and Pacha “Red” is providing the soundtrack to the peak-hour power set.

Space Ibiza 2009 combines the tune-spotting talent of Cr2 Re-cords founder Mark Brown with the pure dance-floor adrenaline of MYNC, setting an unbeatable standard for excitement and ener-gy. For twenty years Space Ibiza has drawn party lovers from around the globe to experience the magic of house music in its unique at-mosphere. In this landmark 20th anniversary, Space has chosen the

UK independent label Cr2 Records as their partner to release this year’s Space Ibiza com-pilation. The format includes two CD’s and a bonus DVD which features the highlights of this year’s Space opening party.

Balearic Beach Sessions is an inspired 80-minute sun-soaked musi-cal journey mixed by Alfredo and released on Azuli. Alfredo is a legend, not only in Ibiza, but throughout the clubbing world. The acid house revolution was sparked by the music he played and the atmosphere he created on the dance-floor. His achievement was to unify a wild mix of sounds, blending Chicago house with a distinctly European pop sensibility under Ibiza’s warm star-lit skies. Alfredo is the very person who inspired the term “Balearic beats” and a DJ who still lives on the

island. The album is a celebration of Ibiza and the island’s musical diversity.

Release Yourself Volume 8 sees Roger Sanchez’ pre-party collec-tion on Disc One, making fine company for the likes of Faithless and Mike Monday and tracks from Tuccillo and Veerus & Maxie Devine. On Disc Two Roger moves up a gear with the party selection where exclusives roll in from Terry Viether & Per QX, Chris Kaeser, Jesse Garcia, Tiko’s Groove, Da Hool and Zenker, and Martin Accorsi. Yes, it is all sexy and most definitely funky! The S-Man presents some of his biggest tracks, fresh international names, hot new producers and

cool remixers. As all party aficionados know, Release Yourself is a full-on cosmopolitan concept that embodies Roger’s rich musical heritage.

WIN WIN WINYou can win a copy of each of this selected summer souvenirs! Just send an email to [email protected] telling us which release you like most and with some luck one of them will be yours!!!

Juicy Ibiza 2009 is a mixed compilation carrying the name of Robbie Rivera’s weekly Juicy Ibiza parties at the world’s biggest club, Privilege. With tracks by Deadmau5, Joachim Garraud, John Dahlbäck, Kimito Lopez and exclusive tracks by Robbie Rivera himself, Robbie delivers a track list which is a relentless joy for the ear. He shows that his style can not be pigeonholed in only one single genre. Being active as a producer since 1996, his im-pressive list of productions and remixes is still rapidly expanding.

Reading the list of artists he remixed is like reading the VIP list of any international music award ceremony: Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Faithless, Moloko, David Guetta, Pink, Bob Sinclar, Ricky Martin and many others are strongly demanding Robbie Ri-vera’s remix work.

Privilege Ibiza has been traditionally releasing its own summer compilation over the years - a tradition which is being continued this season with the release of “Privilege Ibiza 2009”, mixed by Cosmic Gate and Hardwell. Disc One sees heavenly trance tracks produced by none the less than Mark Norman, Wippenberg, Moonbeam and of course Cosmic Gate, suitable for either rocking the dance-floor or taking it easy in a trendy beach club. On Disc Two, next to his own exclusive productions, Hardwell selected the

very best from colleagues such as Funkerman, Fedde Le Grand, Kid Massive and many more. With these artists combined on one double CD compilation, Privilege Ibiza 2009 captures two most popular music styles.

Café Mambo celebrates 15 years and more than 5.000 sunsets with a special musical tribute from José Padilla, the man credited for creating the whole down-tempo, deep, chill-out sound himself. This is a man who has been a leading musical figure on the White Island for over 30 years, adding that little bit of extra tranquility to this magical destination. So it is not surprising that he has been invited to curate the anniversary compilation for a venue that has been also at the center of Ibiza’s club culture for two decades now,

Café Mambo in San Antonio. José Padilla has put together a selection of exquisite Balearic moments to facilitate and eek out the maximum chill potential. The album is a spacey, beautiful album for sunset seekers.

Meganite by Mauro Picotto is an exclusive double CD release, celebrating six years of Meganite at Privilege. The collection takes you on a music journey from the sweeter side of house, progressing smoothly and building up the energy with its funky techno beats. The compilation features 21 full-length tracks, produced and remixed by various artists performing at Meganite events this summer. The first CD features a great collection of original mixes, mostly released on Alchemy records or due to be

released late summer 2009. Highlights include Mauro Picotto’s upcoming “Diamond” release, and recent hits “Happily” and “Living for the Time”. The second CD is packed with incredible remixes by world renowned artists including Adam Beyer, Steve Rach-mad, Technasia, Christian Smith & John Selway, Mark Broom and many more.

//REINA & ROSES

When you are driving on the road from Eivissa to Santa Eularia you will pass a big pink sign at km 7 with a crown on it and it’s definitely worth stopping there to visit the divine boutique Reina & Roses.

//KANABEACHAll different but all together…

Three surfers from France made their passion into a profession and founded the fashion label Kanabeach in 1986. The first t-shirts were printed in the basement. Now Kanabeach is popular through various collections and famous for their original prints. Ever since they stick to the label’s motto about people beyond geographical and cultural barriers as the identity of their brand: All different but all together.

//JAMIE JONES „Don’t You Remember The Future” is the debut artist album from Jamie Jones, peering into the coming apocalypse with a body-shaking, teeth-grinding, tripped out fusion of sound on Crosstown Rebels. There are some talents that remain inconspicuous and then there are some you can’t ignore. Jamie Jones is the latter, quickly rising to superstar status in underground dance circles over recent years. Releases on Cocoon, Get Physical and BPitch have catapulted him to become a cult figure and he is widely admired for his true originality. From his debut single “Amazon”, to his latest anthem “Summertime”, his unique sound has won him worldwide audiences and this album has

been widely anticipated as one to change the face of the current house music spectrum. With “Don’t You Remember The Future” Jamie Jones delivers a seamlessly blended up-tempo mix, featuring ten brand new tracks, filled with eerie and energetic moments. Jamie tells us that “the concept of the album is the idea

that this is the year 2116, when music has become some kind of controlled means of manipulating humans, and the rebellion consists of artist like myself who are hiding underground creating sounds that explore outside that control”. Cinematic and spell-binding, this album sounds like no other, cautiously enveloping the listener and creating a new and ambitious approach to the traditional artist album.

//HOT CHIP The five-headed electro pop colossus known as Hot Chip are the next act up to follow in the footsteps of Erol Alkan, Miss Kittin, Klaxons and Felix Da Housecat in compiling “A Bugged Out Mix”. Released on New State, the album comprises of two discs (Bugged Out and Bugged In), a mix fortified and 100% ready for the floor: The “Bugged Out” side features the kind of techno and house Felix Martin, Al Doyle and Joe Goddard play out regularly with tracks from John Tejada, Mark Romboy, Dominik Eulberg and Gabriel Ananda to name but a few. Also included is a new exclusive Hot Chip tune called ‘Take It In’. “The idea for Bugged Out was something altogether more considered, poised and subtle - a chance to turn a cold eye upon all the records that we've been playing in clubs over the last couple of years and fuse them into some kind of monstrous, all-destroying whole”, says Felix on “Bugged Out”. By contrast the “Bugged In” side is a dream house party mix thrown down by Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard and Owen Clarke, including everything from widescreen pop and smooth RnB ballads to grime. “It’s also a collection of songs that we play out regularly, remixes that we are proud of, and old favourites that we decided to somehow collect together”, remarks Joe on “Bugged In”.

//MOGUAI Moguai has been a leading figure in the electronic music scene for more than a decade and setting new standards in production. His DJ sets are no less remarkable, surround sound experiences for countless clubbers. Moguai’s story also begins with the letter “M” – Marl is the name of his home town in Germany. The road from Marl to Düsseldorf is a short one, and Moguai was inspired by the spherical, experimental sounds emanating from the Rhine metropolis and, at the same time, found his way as a DJ into the rave scene of the Ruhr and beyond. It was the era of vast warehouse gatherings with gigantic sound systems turned up to the max that shaped Moguai’s musical understanding until today. The shockwaves were

so severe, that traces of them can still be felt and heard. At the epicentre: Moguai. His sound, however, does more than just shake and disturb, the Moguai sound is just different. Just recently he did a remix for the new project of the France top DJ and producer Play Paul. The project is called „Ryskee – Leave Me Amor“ and has been released on the German record label „WePlay“ this sum-mer. Right now Moguai is involved in a project with Funkerman who asked him to do a remix for his new single called „Slide“.

//LIVE FROM THE ZOO “Saytek - Live From The Seal Pit” is the debut album of Saytek and a deep driving journey through underground techno, taking in elements of Detroit, dub and the new minimal tech phenomenon. Recorded in the Seal Pit Arena of The Zoo Project Ibiza last summer, this album received rave reviews as well as being universally loved in discerning techno and underground house circles. The second album “Saytek - Live From The Pool” is to be released later this season. Expect a different side from Saytek who presents this album again fully improvised, recorded in front of over 2.000 people at the Pool Arena of The Zoo Project, taking in elements of deep tech house and acid house as well as Latin, African and jazz flavours.

For a few years now, Saytek has acutely controlled dance-floors, both at home and abroad with his fresh use of technology, his skilled un-derstanding of composition, his balance of energy and emotion and his ability to construct and deconstruct live sounds capes. Saytek’s obsessive love of hardware sees him rocking up at clubs with groove boxes, synths, Kaos pads and various other noise mangling gadgets, weaving together a seamless mix of floor shaking electronics. He ar-ranges, re-samples, tweaks filters, layers effects, triggers samples, mutes parts and mixes everything together on the fly.

//JORIS VOORNJoris Voorn is a producer and DJ from Rotterdam, Netherlands. Raised in a musical family, music naturally became an intrinsic part of Voorn’s life from an early age. Electronic music first caught his attention in the mid-90’s and after developing a more focused interest in house and techno, Joris inves-ted in the versatile MC-303 Groovebox and began to experiment with synth sounds and drum loops. His first EP was massive success, finding itself in the record boxes of Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, DJ Rush and Technasia. His latest work is the Balance 014 project, a mix album released on EQ Recordings. Across two discs and using over 100 tracks, Joris constructs a layered and seamless mix of some of the best tech house, minimal and electronic dance music. An epic mix, in the very best sense of the word, Ba-lance 014 achieves the rare feat of combining variety and consistency, making it perfect for train spotters and dancers alike. The tracks change quickly and quietly, but the beat goes on. “The process of making these mixes has been more like painting with sound rather than performing a traditional DJ mix. As you can see I have used a lot of tracks, my intention while working on these mixes however, has not been 'more is more'. I hope that people will enjoy the results, some listeners will be surprised, but I believe I've pushed my own boundaries in a technical, but even more so, in a musical and artistic way”, remarks Joris.

//JOSH WINKPhiladelphia born and based Josh Wink is one of the true pioneers of techno, house and allied styles - blurring the definitions. At 13, young Josh began his first job as an apprentice at Captain Jack's mobile DJ Company; three years later he started to play at local house parties. By 1988, the year that “rave” exploded into public conscious, Wink was already a main player on the underground music scene. "Then I began to realize that I had ideas of songs. Instead of dj’ing other people's music, I wanted to translate these ideas into my own music that was in my head. House music and new wave electronic music really influenced me when I was a teenager”.

In 1990, just out of his teens, Wink released his first EP “Tribal Confusion” on the infamous Strictly Rhythm imprint under the moniker E-Culture with King Britt. In 1994 he formed his own imprint Ovum Recordings and released “Liquid Sum-mer” - a track which helped propel him onto the international circuit. Josh Wink's Ovum imprint, since its beginnings the label has seen releases from Loco Dice, Shlomi Aber, Marc Romboy, DJ Pierre, Aaron Carl, King Britt, Steve Bug, D'Julz and

of course his own productions. It still continues to grow by both introducing new talents and releasing one-offs from some of the world's best known producers. "Ovum is about integrity to good music! We feel that we don't have to follow the music that is trendy or fad-like at the moment”, Josh says.

//SANDER KLEINENBERGSander Kleinenberg’s ultra hot label Little Mountain Recordings is back with its latest release, entitled “This Is Our Night”. The brand new re-lease is taken from his forthcoming studio album, due in spring 2010. The catchy lyrics, infectious hooks, pumping bass line and overall production quality ensure that this track will be a smash from Ibiza to Ireland, Berlin to Buenos Aires and London to Lima this summer. “This Is Our Night” is really is a peak-time track and Sander’s official follow-up to “This Is Miami” on his own label and a real continuation of form. The release, with remixes from Rene Amesz and Ned Shepard, is the first part of a two part release. On remix duties are Dutch talent Rene Amesz, American Francis Preve and of course this year’s man of the moment, Deadmau5.Sander has been a regular fixture at the Balearic landmark for many years. After years of playing for Pure Pacha, hosting such an artistic show himself and generally smashing it in the club last year, it seemed only right that Sander took the reign and became in-volved with the music programming and creative art direction of Pure Pacha this season. Sander is very much involved in the look, feel and projection of the party: “Having worked with Sander for many years it’s fantastic that Sander will be fronting Pure Pacha this summer. He has consistently rocked Pacha every time he plays so it’s great to have that confidence in the quality of music for every Friday night this summer”, remarks Danny Whittle, head honcho of Pacha Ibiza.

//MONIKA KRUSEMonika Kruse, musician, DJ, record label boss, activist against rac-ism and xenophobia is the “Grand Dame” of Germany’s electronic music scene. Monika was born 1971 in Berlin, but grew up in Ba-varia’s capital Munich. Her passion and love for music came at the age of seven when she started taking piano lessons. Funk, hip hop and house influenced her early DJ sets in the beginning 90’s.Aside from her DJ’ing, Monika began to create her own musical pro-ductions. She released her first track in 1996 before she met her “partner in crime” Patrick Lindsey with whom she shares a very suc-cessful collaboration since then. Moving back to Berlin end of the 90’s, Monika formed two record companies: Terminals M and Elec-tric Avenue Recordings, two label imprints that offer a platform for well-known and unknown, young and creative artists and producers. In spring last year Monika Kruse together with producer Gregor Tresher finished her first solo album “Changes of Perception". Released in September 2008, it was voted as Best Album of 2008 on # 2 in Germany´s Raveline magazine. In 2009 three remix EP´s of "Changes of Perception" have been released on Terminal M. They contain remixes from Heartthrob, Mark Broom, Broombeck, 2000 and One, Erman Erim and Luca Morris and had dropped in spring, summer and fall of 2009.

// LIFE OF THE ISLE // HIPPIES FOREVER - BUT... WHERE HAVE THEY GONE?

It is exactly 40 years ago that the hippie era was at its zenith. On 15th August 1969 the

Woodstock festival of peace and love began and for the next three days 32 artists and

500,000 visitors celebrated in the rain and mud. “Make love, not war” was the essential

message. This feeling of life, this tolerance in the hearts, the belief of the good in

people, a life without constraints, taboos and violence – that’s what we know today as

the definition of the life of the hippies. Above all stands nature, and being able to live

happily with the simplicity of things.

In the 70’s Ibiza and Formentera became centres of the hippie movement in Europe.

But where have all the hippies gone and what’s left from the original hippie spirit? We

spoke to Susanna and Eveline who came to Ibiza at this time from Germany and have

been living on the island since then.

WHAT’S THE HIPPIE’S PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE?EVELINE: Primarily it consists of two things: freedom and love!

WHAT WAS THE LIFE OF THE HIPPIES LIKE IN THE 70’S IN IBIZA?SUSANNA: We all lived in a brotherhood-like spirit and everybody was part of a big family communal family. The idea of togetherness was very strong.EVELINE: The young people in the 70’s politically and spiritually were really advanced, much more than today. In Spain it was the time after Franco’s death when a whole generation enjoyed the new freedom they were missing before.

HOW DID YOU SPEND YOUR DAYS IN THE 70’S AND HOW WAS THE LIFE IN THE ISLAND AT THIS TIME?SUSANNA: Basically hanging around, enjoying nature and being thankful to God. There were great parties everywhere and every day something unexpected happened. Also we met with friends, and we just lived for the moment and worked on ourselves to become more conscious.EVELINE: At that time I was working a lot. I used to run a shop for designer clothes, and every winter I created a new collection for my own label. Life was so wonderful, and the nature was mainly untouched, but still there was a lot to be done, and to make a living.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE SO MUCH OF IBIZA

THAT MADE YOU STAY HERE?SUSANNA: It was the liberty and solidarity between the people. EVELINE: Ibiza was and still is a paradise with a special energy and very friendly people. Of course also the good weather in Ibiza makes the island attractive, and the fantastic sea.

HAVE THE IDEALS OF THE HIPPIES CHANGED SINCE THEN?SUSANNA: Many of our ideals dissolved, and there are only few members of this movement left. People should become again more aware of these ideals: freedom from falseness and bondage, seeking truth and love through knowledge.EVELINE: It was the capitalistic system and new norms and prohibitions on the island which made the hippies adapt to them and forced them to cut down their previous ideals.

HOW WOULD YOU RECOGNIZE A HIPPIE, AND IS THERE SOMETHING TYPICAL „HIPPIE“ LEFT IN THE IBIZA OF TODAY?SUSANNA: Don’t think that you will find hippies on some of the so called pseudo-„hippie markets“ where they are selling cheap crap from China. The hippies who still live in the island live a rather secluded life. And some of us of course are really old now.EVELINE: Hippies love nature above everything! Then and now they all have a strong ecological attitude. The spirit of the hippies of my generation lives in our children. Also they have to adapt to modern life but we as parents hope

PARTYSAN IBIZA SEP#0954

Page 55: PARTYSAN Magazine

that they stick on these essential ideals of peace, love and solidarity. In Ibiza there are still some hippie communities, and we have really good parties in private houses which can not be compared to anything else.

There still some places in Ibiza where you can feel the spirit of the hippies: Las Dalias and Anita’s Bar in San Carlos, Eco in San Joan, Benirras beach and Aguas Blancas in the North, the ecological centre Casita Verde, the Saturday’s flea market in Sant Jordi and many shops where they are selling hippie style-inspired fashion.

Famous for their atmosphere of the 60’s and 70’s also are the Flower Power parties at Pacha (next party: Sunday, 13th September). We spoke with the organiser and resident DJ Piti Urgell about the hippie spirit at Pacha and how he sees the hippie culture today:

WHAT’S THE SPECIAL THING WHY PEOPLE SHOULD COME TO THE FLOWER POWER PARTIES AT PACHA AND HOW MUCH HAVE THE PARTIES CHANGED THROUGHOUT THE LAST YEARS?PITI: Since the Flower Power parties have a strong tradition since about 30 years now the special thing that it is they are just different, happy and kind of innocent. And I think also because it is the only event in Ibiza where different music is played than just bum bum.

PARTYSAN IBIZA SEP#09 55

Page 56: PARTYSAN Magazine

// LIFE OF THE ISLE

Mainly colourful people are coming to the parties. I call them little angels. The music nowadays must be more exciting because society has less patience to dance to quieter rhythms and people are less aware of emotional songs like in previous years.

ARE THERE “REAL” HIPPIES COMING TO THE FLOWER POWER PARTIES NOWADAYS? OR IS IT MORE THE TOURISTS WHO LIKE TO CATCH THE SPIRIT? PITI: The Flower Power party is not just for hippies. My idea is that people get mixed up in the music from the 60’s, pop, soul, and rock, underground and psychedelic. The term Flower Power comes from San Francisco and the hippies there, but I see Flower Power in all the music from the 60’s. The exhibitors and their stands from Las Dalias and the Indian decoration style pull the true hippies of the island to the party.

DO YOU WISH BACK THE TIMES OF FREE LOVE, PEACE, SOLIDARITY AND HAPPINESS AMONGST THE PEOPLE? PITI: This philosophy could not succeed because it was eaten up by materialism. It was the times when people started to make things that never have been made before. But the key for me was the music that was created with heart and genius. The rest is philosophy and society, manufactured by the passing of time and out from the positive and negative of being human. If

you allow me I would summarize these times as coined by the “music of the geniuses” of the 60’s.

The young people who are coming to Ibiza nowadays - for a holiday or even the whole summer to work, but also those who chose to live here all-year round, are inspired by the hippie flair that is still present in Ibiza. Many of the season workers are coming back to Ibiza every year, not to become rich, but rather get a piece of life quality, freedom and tolerance.

In Ibiza until today the people are still free to masquerade as a tiger or elephant, and no one looks critically at the sight of two men or two women kissing. The free expression of personality is still what makes Ibiza so attractive, whether for a short visit or a longer stay.

If you want to know more about the life of the hippies in Ibiza we recommend the documentary “Hippies Forever” (2005), directed by Carlos Moro, featuring some great personalities from the island such as Yanny Levkoff, Selim, Noelle and Carlos the shaman, check it out on www.tu.tv.

// LIFE OF THE ISLE // THE NEW ROSÉ WINE FROM IBIZA

Our recommendation for hot afternoons at the beach or early morning after-party sessions: A glass of chilled “vino rosado”. Nothing conjures up the feeling of summer in the Mediterranean more than the smooth sexy hue of a rosé wine. Whether sipped slowly on a sun-drenched terrace or accompanying a beach feast under the shade of a sombrilla, Ibiza would not be complete without its “vino rosado”. This summer saw the launch of its very own home-grown “Ibizkus”.Mingling together the name of the island that provides the land and the ubiquitous pink hibiscus flower, the name of “Ibizkus” quickly spread across the islands hottest and coolest bars and restaurants. Totem Wines, the company behind, is the culmination of years of planning on the part of Laurent Fresard, a young maestro originally born and brought up in Burgundy. In the case of Ibiza, and “Ibizkus”, Totem chose to develop the rare and ancient vine Monastrell, which dates back to the early settlers to the island, the Phoenicians. “Ibiza is fantastic for this wine, because of its humidity. The closeness of the mountains to the sea produces mists nearly every day and humidity in the air, particularly in the north of the island, which keeps the vine hydrated. And the red soil, which is so rich in minerals, strengthens the vine. These vines have evolved alongside the history of this island”, states Laurent Fresard.

One of the world’s leading Taoist masters - the Barefoot Doctor- plans to bring a bit of balance back into our crazy summer schedules. With early evening sessions of dub music and guided meditation, staring at 21:00 on Sundays at Bazaar in Santa Gertruidis, it’s the first collaboration between the Barefoot Doctor and island DJ Hofer 66. Free of charge, the weekly “Dub Spirit” sessions will be held in the amazing atmosphere of the Yurt tent. Born and raised in London, Stephen Russell aka the Barefoot Doctor has travelled all over the world, learning and teaching the way of the Tao, finally falling under the spell of Ibiza’s goddess Tanit in 2008. It was shortly after his first visit that the Barefoot Doctor moved to Ibiza full-time. Since his arrival in Ibiza the Barefoot Doctor has been teaching the ancient art of Tai Chi to the locals, holding day retreats at rural hotels, and working to add to his 13 strong list of published books; the latest of which, “Pure” was recently released in UK and Europe.

// ZENSES

What is Zenses? It’s a project that was born in Ibiza to four women from the four corners of the world. They are sharing the knowledge about the alchemy of food and the magic of us all being creators. Zenses combines the pleasure and enjoyment of the senses and the awareness of the ceremony of eating, the beauty of food and the integration of food as a powerful daily medicine. Zenses is more than just having good food in a special surrounding; it’s the celebration of a tradition that is so essential to human beings like hardly anything else. But in modern times food follows rather function than form. Eating should be an event, dedicated to the human body, mind and soul. The Zenses team invites you to experience food with all senses, and the ceremony is an encounter with the self, and with others. The only requirement is presence and openness to let go into enjoyment and observation. Zensual food is taking into respect the elements and the manifestations of nature. Zenual food also means questioning your needs. Zenses food ceremonies can be hold everywhere.

// IBIZA JOB CENTRE

Ibiza Job Centre is a very helpful website about Ibiza even if you are not looking for a job, or as a company, looking for employees. The website run by Suzy Huggett is all about connection people. Of course the basic tool is the database of job seekers and employers but in the same moment it offers many helpful links to services and facilities in Ibiza, as well as legal information for workers. Founder Suzy Huggett explains: “Ibiza Job Centre was born out of a real need - there was no sure fast way of finding a job or staff on the island. Working as a freelance hairdresser, I have seen people running around like headless chickens on both sides, either looking for work or desperate for staff. I felt a more professional approach was needed as the island continues to evolve”. Registered employers who upload a job vacancy on Ibiza Job Centre receive a list of job seekers from which to select candidates for interview, and have full access to the database of workers. Job seekers can upload their CV and even there is an option to upload a video for that all important first impression - the perfect way for PR’s, dancers and singers from the show-biz to really sell themselves.

// PARTYSAN OPEN DINNERat ShardanaIn historical records the Shardana are known as “the sea people”, a group of skilled warriors that appear all over the Mediterranean Sea, Egypt and some parts of the Middle East. It is believed that they eventually settled in Sardinia, giving their name to this area.

The new restaurant and lounge bar Shardana, situated in front of the new Le Masque nightclub in Playa d’en Bossa, is the new venture of the former owners of Noctambula. The menu is based on traditional Sardinian cuisine with great meat and sea food dishes, fantastic home-made pasta and some extraordinary Italian deserts - everything with a slight twist, varying on a daily bases and served by a very sympathetic team.

During the day you can enjoy the ‘Menu del Dia’ for just 10 Euros or if you wish to be slightly more active, you can go downstairs and enjoy a game of squash, kick boxing, take some circus classes or simply enjoy a massage. There is also a small pool outside which is open to the restaurant guests.

The restaurant is already a famous hotspot for the islanders and insiders, and it’s a perfect place to have a filling dinner with friends, some cool drinks and high-quality electronic sounds before a long party night.

// Mambo BarMambo Bar was opened by Enrique and Horst in 1979 and quickly became a famous meeting point in the heart of the old port in Ibiza Town. The cosy bar is located on the marina and you when you stop there you will immediately realise that this place has something special to offer - and we are not talking about the celebrities who also like to hang out here for a tasty pre-party cocktail. The two owners have this special friendly and open-minded attitude that gives you the feeling that you are belonging to the multi-cultural Mambo family. The team is really nice and that’s also one reason why Mambo bar has such a strong following of residents, locals and season worker. Everyone of them can tell you at least one small anecdote about this historic bar. Mambo Bar is a cool spot to see and to be seen on the busy harbour promenade, and sipping on your cocktail you can also see the dancers and performers of the clubs passing by here every night in the famous parades.

// Bitch Every now and then girls ask their friends where they bought that cute little dress and the answer is often “from this great little shop I know in ….”. Well, in Ibiza town that great little shop is called Bitch and is located right in the beginning of Calle de la Virgen, one of the most trendy and busiest streets on the island. Every season they have a great little collection that is very typical of Ibiza, mixing glamorous with the funky and of course the clubbing. They also have small men and children’s collection as well as some wonderfully cool accessories and bags, which you will not find in any other shops. With the bold and daring name ‘Bitch’ it cannot be anything but a hotspot!

// ParawdisoWords by Yanny

It’s organic, it’s raw, it’s delicious, it’s good for your body and for Mother Earth. This is what Parawdiso, located in the main street of Santa Gertrudis, has to offer. The raw food cuisine, which has swept through America in recent years and begins to leave its mark in Europe, is Ibiza’s first and one of the few raw food restaurants in all of Spain. If you think raw is bland even though it might be healthy you are in for a big surprise.

Their popular zucchini spaghetti with sun-dried tomato sauce is divine. As are their falafel wraps, nut burgers, elaborate salads and the lemon-coconut soup. Thanks to a special dehydrator, “cooking” is done over many hours at temperatures low enough to preserve all the nutrients of the food. No enzymes are destroyed in the process, making digestion easier.

All their seed crackers and wrappings are prepared this way and one of the results is a raw chocolate crêpe with pineapple, buckwheat and linseeds that is like no crêpe that you’ve ever eaten before. Their juices and smoothies may seem similar to the offerings of an ordinary juice bar but because everything is organic you just know the difference. You think you know the taste of gazpacho? Try again!

Thanks to a team of three cooks with extensive experience in vegan, macrobiotic and Ayurvedic cuisines everything on the menu has the touch of alchemy in it. Eating here is an enriching experience on every level. Organic wine and beer are also available.

Sarah, the hostess, remarks that for the majority of its patrons Parawdiso is their first raw food experience, and that “99 per cent go away happy and say they’ll come again.” From time to time there are live concerts, performances or ethnic cuisine nights, and a raw food festival is already spinning in Sarah’s head.

// BazaarThe most ambitious project this year comes with the opening of the wonderful garden lounge restaurant Bazaar in the geographical centre of the island on the road to Santa Gertrudis. To the insiders this location might be still remembered as the former La Diosa and the legendary and wild parties there. Due to some irregularities with the license, La Diosa had to close down and the paradise-like location remained shut for many years.

Finally last July we saw a spectacular re-opening under new management, new name and new concept. Bazaar is a unique place in Ibiza with a great future because everybody can feel the special atmosphere and creative passion that underlies it. The vast square with the Yurt tent, the innovative design of the restaurant area, the magical mix of Mediterranean and oriental styles, the exquisite kitchen at reasonable prices, great service staff – plus the probably best little club on the island - make this venue one of the most talked about openings this season in Ibiza. There you can find literally all kind of personalities, and that’s basically the main idea of the project.

At Bazaar there is a space for everyone: mid-aged bohemians, families with their kids, business people and young hedonists. What is most astonishing that Bazaar is not following the price policy of many other restaurants, lounges and clubs in Ibiza but offers good quality for extremely good prices. A glass of wine costs 3 Euros, a delicious cocktail or long drink varies between 7 and 8 Euros, and a filling dinner menu starts from 18 Euros.

Basically, Bazaar is a place where you can easily spend the whole night, and still discover something new. Bazaar offers a new lifestyle to Ibiza, a concept that brings back the easygoing flair of the hippie era plus a touch of sophistication. You can feel and see the vision of a miraculous movie set the owners have with this place; nothing seems random but with a deep understanding of what Ibiza needs: quality, good entertainment and innovation.
