Harold Iseminger’s Story of Generosity and Impact
Annual Report
DEAR PEACEHEALTH SOUTHWEST FRIENDS AND DONORS,
It is my privilege to serve as the new Executive Director of the PeaceHealth Southwest Foundation. I want to thank everyone for the gracious welcome I received to PeaceHealth and to the greater community. Southwest Washington is a wonderful place to work and live, and I am thrilled to be back in my hometown in this role.
I am pleased to report that the PeaceHealth Southwest Foundation received $4.8 million in private gifts during the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2013, exceeding our original $3.1 million goal significantly.
Some of the key gifts the Foundation received during fiscal year 2013 were: $1.5 million from the estate of Harold Iseminger for Family Medicine; a $1 million charitable life income fund gift for a new CT scanner; almost $300,000 from PeaceHealth Southwest employees for a variety of programs; and $85,000 from the Tod and Maxine McClaskey Foundation for the DaVinci simulation robot.
The Foundation’s goal for the 2014 fiscal year is $3.5 million. Initiatives being undertaken include campaigns for Heart and Vascular Care, the Neurosciences, Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care, and meeting the needs of vulnerable patients and families. Our outstanding Board of Directors, under the leadership of President George Middleton, is leading the way toward another successful fundraising year.
Southwest Washington has been blessed with exceptional medical care ever since Mother Joseph and the Sisters of Providence founded a hospital here in 1858. Times change, names change, and systems change, but the Sisters’ commitment to providing compassionate care to all survives and thrives here at PeaceHealth Southwest.
Thank you for continuing to support PeaceHealth Southwest. Your contributions are more important than ever and are having a real impact on the lives of those we serve. Together we will continue to help PeaceHealth Southwest achieve exceptional medicine and compassionate care for every one of our patients.
Gratefully,
Carol Van Natta Executive Director

New leadership takes charge at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical CenterMajor changes in leadership occurred this year in the Columbia Network of
PeaceHealth as long-time administrators, Joseph M. Kortum and Rainy Atkins,
announced their retirements. Josiah M. (“Sy”) Johnson was named the
new President/Chief Mission Officer of the Columbia Network.
Both Kortum and Atkins were strong supporters of the role of philanthropy. Their commitment to philanthropy was demonstrated not only through their formal leadership roles, but also through their personal giving.
Joe Kortum saw philanthropy as a distinguishing characteristic of great medical centers and worked closely with the Clark County community to increase its support of PeaceHealth Southwest. During his decade of leadership, a number
of significant fundraising initiatives came to fruition, including the Firstenburg Tower, the Kearney Breast Centers, the Holtzman Twins Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and improvements in the Heart and Vascular Center. Kortum strengthened many existing relationships with community members and encouraged numerous others to begin supporting PeaceHealth Southwest.
Kortum was also among the first to create a Charitable Life Income Fund gift through our Foundation. His gift provided immediate benefits to PeaceHealth Southwest by helping to fund technological improvements throughout the Medical Center.
Rainy Atkins, who became a hospital administrator after a distinguished career in nursing, was equally committed to the role of philanthropy in healthcare. Known for her warm and giving spirit, she embodied
PeaceHealth’s vision that every person receives safe, compassionate care, every time.
Rainy was particularly committed to providing care for women and children. She financially supported those programs through consistent, generous contributions. Her sound advice and guidance was sought by both Foundation staff and volunteers.
Josiah “Sy” Johnson was named the new President/Chief Mission Officer of the Columbia Network (comprised of PeaceHealth Southwest and PeaceHealth St. John) after more than a decade in key leadership roles at
PeaceHealth St. John. An accountant by training, Johnson is noted for his warm, no-nonsense style and his ability to collaborate successfully with a wide range of constituents.
Johnson worked closely with Foundation staff and Board members at PeaceHealth St. John to significantly increase giving there. Projects he helped facilitate included the renovation of the main hospital building, the Cardiovascular Lab, the Dialysis Center, and just recently, the new Kearney Breast Center.

New Foundation Board Members
INTRODUCING GEORGE MIDDLETON, FOUNDATION BOARD PRESIDENT
George Middleton began his two-year term as president of the Foundation Board July 1st.
Middleton was born in Rockaway Beach, NY, and received his undergraduate degree in math from the Rochester Institute of Technology. After working in Europe, he earned his M.B.A. at the University of Washington.
A number of years as an accountant and CFO followed, but eventually Middleton ventured into investment management. Today, he’s a principal in Limoges Investment Management, located in the Hazel Dell area of Vancouver, where he advises a wide range of clients on how best to achieve their financial goals.
Middleton’s service to PeaceHealth Southwest began in 2005 when he was invited to join the Finance Committee.

“Several things have led to my commitment to PeaceHealth Southwest,” says Middleton. “First are the friendships I have developed with other board members and volunteers. Second is PeaceHealth’s commitment to caring for most vulnerable segments of our community. And third, I’ve been a patient at PeaceHealth Southwest and have experienced excellent care.”
Middleton and his wife Cindy are members of both the Cascade Society, which recognizes those who make annual gifts of $1,000 or more to PeaceHealth Southwest, and the Columbia Society, which recognizes those who have included PeaceHealth Southwest in their estate plans.
“Our philanthropy springs chiefly
from gratitude for all we have
been given,” says Middleton.
“We are lucky to be able to give
back to our community.”

HeArtwarming Gala Success Will Expand Heart & Vascular Excellence
On September 21st, 500 HeArts of Clark
County Gala guests dressed up, enjoyed
great art, food and wine, and gave
generously from their hearts, exceeding
the goal and raising $522,800!
“It was a truly heartwarming event,” said Connie Kearney, HeArts of Clark County Chair. “It was exciting to see the community come together to generously support furthered excellence in heart and vascular care.”
Funds raised through this endeavor will help build the new Heart & Vascular Surgical Theater which will allow cardiac and vascular specialists to move quickly
from catheter-based procedures to open-surgery procedures.
“During very complicated cases, it’s wonderful to have the opportunity to switch from a percutaneous, or less invasive procedure, to an open procedure – something that can be done in a true surgical environment,” says Shaun Harper, MD, Medical Director of PeaceHealth Southwest’s Heart & Vascular Center.
“We extend deep gratitude to our sponsors, volunteers, Gala guests and donors,” said Foundation Director Carol Van Natta. “Our community will have continued access to the best heart and vascular care because of their commitment.”
The new Surgical Theater will be completed in 2014.

Making A DifferenceHAROLD ISEMINGER: A LIFE OF QUIET SERVICE
In 1982, when Harold Iseminger was 65 years old, he
signed up as a volunteer at PeaceHealth Southwest.
A quiet man, he diligently went to work in the Medical
Records department.
He sorted physicians’ mail, made hospital deliveries, and organized paperwork. His co-workers joked that he knew the hospital better than anyone and seemed to have keys to most of it.
He didn’t like talking about himself, but he enjoyed getting to know the folks he worked with. One of his co-workers said, “He shared our children, our pets, our humor, and our food. His contribution as a friend and colleague cannot be measured.”
His volunteer commitment was extraordinary. He normally worked five days a week, starting at 4 am and leaving around noon. He did this for 23 years, logging a record-setting 34,460 volunteer hours of service! As his health began to fail, he cut back to three days a week. But he continued volunteering, working until just one month before he died, at the age of 88, at our Ray Hickey Hospice House.
Even after his death in 2005, Harold had another gift for the Medical Center. In his will, he left a bequest of $2 million dollars to benefit the Women’s and Children’s fund through our Family
Medicine of Southwest Washington program. With this gift, an endowment has been established that annually provides funds for patients in need.
Dr. David Ruiz, Director of the fund, describes how Harold’s gift has benefited the lives of women and children by providing:
n A crib-safety program for parents of newborns
n Behavioral health support for children in vulnerable home environments
n A “Reach Out and Read” program with reading materials for infants and toddlers
n A “Healthy Lifestyles” class teaching the value of good nutrition and exercise
n In-house consultations for all high-risk OB patients at Family Medicine
Harold Iseminger, a man who did not like public recognition, clearly loved the Medical Center and wanted to make a difference. Because of him, many lives have been, and will continue to be, truly blessed.
Follow Harold’s example and consider offering support where your heart leads you. Make
a gift in your estate plan or donate to the PHSW Foundation fund of your choice. Use the
enclosed gift envelope or call 360-514-3106 for more information about planned giving.
In his will, he left a bequest of $2 million dollars to benefit the
Women’s and Children’s fund through our Family Medicine program.

A BEQUEST TO PEACEHEALTH SOUTHWEST DOES GREAT THINGS!
Harold’s Gift at Work
It’s true! Making a bequest to PeaceHealth Southwest will:
n Contribute to the strength of this community’s health for generations to come
n Ensure you receive invitations to special events and behind-the-scenes tours of the Medical Center
n Allow your recognition as a Columbia Society member on the beautiful Donor Tribute Wall in the Firstenburg Tower lobby
n Lead to recognition in Partners Newsletter and the annual Foundation report
Making a bequest to PeaceHealth Southwest is easy and flexible. It is simply a gift to the Foundation made through your will or living trust. It allows you to retain full ownership and use of your assets for as long as you live and can be revised if circumstances change. Bequests can be unrestricted to be allocated for the overall good of PeaceHealth Southwest or restricted to a specific area of interest, such as Heart and Vascular, Cancer, Neurosciences, Hospice, etc.
Once you have included a bequest to PeaceHealth Southwest in your will, all you need to do is fill out a very simple Foundation form indicating your intent and you will become a valued member of the Columbia Society.
For more information on making a bequest to PeaceHealth Southwest, including sample bequest language, please contact the Foundation’s executive director, Carol Van Natta, at 360-514-3670 or [email protected].
The Trout family: Kayla, Alec, Olivia, Codie, and baby Emmett
After giving birth in April 2013, Kayla Trout was bothered by continual abdominal pains. Having a family history of Crohn’s disease, she was understandably concerned.
With insurance coverage through the state of Washington for six weeks post-partum, she went to see Dr. Karmy-Jones in June. He ruled out Crohn’s disease, but discovered Kayla had two arterial aneurysms in her spleen, requiring immediate surgery.
By this time, Kayla’s state insurance coverage had expired. Without insurance, she was faced with daunting medical bills in addition to a major health crisis. Sherie Salvadori, a social worker at Family Medicine of Southwest Washington, stepped in and helped secure funding for Kayla’s surgery through the Women’s & Children’s fund.
In July, Kayla had surgery at PeaceHealth Southwest that successfully blocked off both aneurysms. The largest was twice the size of her aorta. Kayla is recovering from the loss of her spleen and doing well. “It was an immense
financial burden lifted from my shoulders. I am so grateful to all the wonderful people at Family Medicine who helped me.”Harold Iseminger would be pleased to know how his bequest made a difference in Kayla’s life.
If you’d like to make a difference for other people in need, use the gift envelope in this newsletter or call the Foundation at 360-514-3106.
