Extraction and processing or
transport and storage of oil and
gas on or off-shore are often
characterised by explosive, cor-
rosive atmospheres. This places
extremely high demands on the
process reliability and quality of
components. With Festo's port-
folio of solutions and services
you're always on the safe side.
Everything is designed accor-
ding to strict safety and reliabi-
lity requirements. Furthermore,
4
“Safety first” for the oil and gas industry
the components, systems and
service packages fulfil all the
criteria for maximum efficiency.
The wide-ranging portfolio of
products with high corrosion
resistance and explosion pro-
tection ensures a high level of
safety and reliability, as well as
optimum system availability.
5
“Safety first” for petrochemicals
Dangerous environmental con-
ditions combined with the high-
est standards for process relia-
bility dominate the refining of
crude oil into fuels and feed
stocks for the petrochemical
industry and in the production
of petrochemical base materi-
als such as olefins or aromatic
compounds. An unplanned
shut-off of the continuously
operating systems is extremely
costly.
Petrochemical systems, such as
steam crackers, are exposed to
a range of harmful environ-
mental influences such as alter-
nating temperatures, moisture,
corrosion and potentially explo-
sive atmospheres.
Products and system solutions
from Festo are designed for
these environmental conditions
and thereby contribute to the
efficiency of the system.
Festo also offers products with
high corrosion resistance and
explosion protection for the
petrochemical industry, thus
guaranteeing a high level of
safety, reliability and optimum
system availability.
6
“Quality first” for basic chemicals
The manufacture of large quan-
tities of chemical base materi-
als, whether gaseous, liquid or
in powder form, is called basic
chemistry. The systems for pro-
ducing chemicals are as varied
as the range of products and,
depending on the production
process, they can be out in the
open or inside in corrosive and
explosive atmospheres. The
market for chemical base mate-
rials is highly competitive. The
focus is therefore on economy
and the consistent reduction of
the total cost of ownership as
well as the maximum quality of
processes and products and
identical batch reduction.
Festo's range includes products
with high corrosion resistance
and explosion protection for
high safety and reliability as
well as for optimum system
availability.
7
The premise of fine/speciality
chemistry is maximum quality
with in some cases minimum
quantities of complex chemical
substances. The quality, depen-
dability and process reliability
of the systems are thus absolu-
tely paramount. This is the only
way to ensure the very high
added value of these contin-
uous processes.
The systems are generally
found indoors and operated in
batch mode. The spectrum
covers colour pigment, liquid
crystals, fibres, lubricants, hou-
sehold cleaning products and
cosmetics, to name but a few.
Festo's range includes products
with high corrosion resistance
and explosion protection for
high safety and reliability as
well as for optimum system
availability.

The end user's production net-
works cover the globe and are
designed for maximum process
reliability and value creation.
The most important factors for
the system operator are the
efficiency of the system, its
smooth operation and the stan-
dardisation of the components
used.
The only partner who instils
confidence is one who can guar-
antee on-site expertise and
consulting, offer the most relia-
ble products and supply spare
parts immediately in case of a
failure. Festo is such a partner.
We provide the answer with
products, modules and systems,
such as complete valves and fit-

cabinets, plug and work, all
available worldwide, including
consultation and service packa-
ges. Corrosion resistance and

ded for a high level of safety,
reliability and optimum system
availability.

Solutions for EPC companies*
In Festo, planners and general
contractors have a genuine
single source partner to work
with. This includes a thorough
understanding of the processes
and structures, obviously
taking international standards
and norms into account. The
products and services philoso-
phy guarantees comprehensive
support along the entire value
creation chain. Festo's compre-
hensive range of software
engineering tools is particularly
impressive. The reliable logi-
stics concept guarantees set
delivery dates and was awar-
ded the German Logistics Prize.
*EPC = Engineering,
Procurement, Construction
EPC companies* offer a full ser-
vice package with complete
development of a system con-
cept, monitoring and organisa-
tion of all project phases. They
advise on system design and
specifications based on the
aims and situation of their
customer, often under extreme
pressure with regards to time
and costs.
10
The grouping “Original Equip-
ment Manufacturer” spans a
wide range of requirements and
products, from process valve
manufacturers, container buil-
ders and sensor and pump
manufacturers to suppliers of
sub-systems and small system
parts. The variety of tasks
requires a partner who covers
and has experience in many
processes. Ideally, they should
be present worldwide and have
expertise in solving automation
problems in pneumatics.
Solutions for Original Equipment Manufacturers
11
When considering products and
services, an openness to all
kinds of technologies, control
worlds and connection techno-
logies is key, as is meeting
international standards.
Last but not least, Festo pro-
ducts are impressive thanks to
their high corrosion resistance
and explosion protection, their
high level of safety, reliability
and optimum system availabili-
ty (SIL).
12
Explosion protection
For explosion protection with
products from Festo you can
choose from thousands of
Festo products. They are valued
the world over for suitable
explosion protection catego-
ries. And the trend is ever-
increasing. It's the only way to
ensure safety: no matter what
explosion protection zones
exist in your company, Festo
has all the suitable products for
the entire pneumatic control
chain – including extensive
documentation and declara-
tions of conformity.
Festo products conform to the
following standards:
Safety for personnel and equipment
Safety Integrity Level (SIL)
Most systems in the petroche-
micals, basic, fine and speciali-
ty chemical industries are
potentially dangerous to
employees, residents or the
environment. The systems are
therefore graded in SIL levels.
Grading takes the following fac-
tors into account:
• Degree of damage in case
of a hazardous event
• Frequency and duration of
time for which people occupy
the danger area
• Possibility of averting the
hazardous event
• Probability of the hazardous
event occurring
Selected Festo products con-
form to the requirements for
safety-related equipment. Festo
provides the documentation
and the characteristic values
necessary for the calculation
and helps you select the right
components.

Companies producing natural
gas are faced with great chal-
lenges. Natural gas is often
found in areas with very harsh
climatic conditions. The
demands placed on the auto-
mation components used for
extraction, processing and dis-
tribution are usually very high,
especially on the process val-
ves, actuators and their net-
works. That's why leading natu-
ral gas producers trust Festo.

Targeted skills training
are two central principles with-
out which the precise training
content of process engineering
could not be conveyed success-
fully. Simulation of a process
engineering system on a PC is
one way of achieving this, while
working on realistic learning
systems is another.
