objectiveTo equip degree students with accounting knowledge, business and communication skills that are in significant demand with prominent employers today, the ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition is designed to simulate real-life experience in the business environment. By developing a sensible business proposal, participating students will learn how professional inputs made by accounting and business professionals can contribute towards the success of a business project.

eligibility for entryThe competition is divided into degree and sub-degree categories, and is open to full-time accounting and business students from local institutes. Each team shall consist of 2 to 4 accounting and/or business students of the same institute.

Stage 2 Briefing session by HKcss-HsBc social enterprise Business centre (seBc) and AccA Up to 2 students of each team will be entitled to attend the briefing session. The session will cover i) the incubation and start-up experiences of HKCSS-HSBC Social Enterprise Business Centre, objectives of So-Biz project, an overview of the opportunities and sustainable business models in serving the elderly in Hong Kong, and ii) assessment criteria of the business proposal and competition logistics. Representatives from SEBC and ACCA Hong Kong will conduct the briefing session together.

Stage 3 submission of Brief Business Proposal Deadline for submission: Monday, 21 October 2013 (no later than 4:00 pm)

All participating teams are required to submit a brief business proposal on the case question in MS PowerPoint format, with no more than 30 slides (in English). Students should submit the soft copy in a CD-Rom together with one printed hard copy (on two-sided A4 sized papers with two PowerPoint slides on each side, in full colours or black and white) to ACCA Hong Kong office by 4:00pm, Monday, 21 October 2013. Late submission will not be accepted.

Stage 4 submission of final Business Proposal (for finalist teams)Deadline for submission: Friday, 8 November 2013 (no later than 4:00 pm)

The 5 finalist teams are required to submit a detailed business proposal of no more than 3,000 words (in English) for judges’ review. All teams are required to send 6 hard copies of your proposal to ACCA Hong Kong office. Marks will be deducted for late submission.

Stage 5 final competition At the Final Competition, 5 finalist teams are required to present their proposals to a panel of judges. Open audience will be invited.

Case ScenarioYou are a team of business consultants for a locally registered institution/organisation. Your challenge is to develop a business model based on a 2-year funding plan of a total HKD1 Million targeting the elderly (aged over 60) as potential customers. At the final competition, your team has to present your proposal to the Competition’s vetting committee which comprises representatives from SEBC and other professionals.

Your proposal should include the following:• A name for your consultant company; • The product/service of the business model; • The business model’s sustainability;• Initial start-up planning, operation details and manpower planning;• Budget and Business forecast.

To support your proposed business model, the following should also be included:• Estimation of the purchasing power of the elderly in Hong Kong (the findings have to be justified by a

survey designed & conducted by the team to capture the real situation in Hong Kong);• Assessment of the top 10 most popular commodities among the elderly;• The top 3 promotional channels to reach the target customers;• Recommendations on the measures contributing to better shopping experience among the elderly;• Long-term solutions to enhance the quality of life of the elderly, particularly on consumption and shopping

experience.

For the budget plan, it should include the following:• Initial setup costs, the funding plan to run the project such as launching campaign, operation costs,

manpower and promotion, etc. • Applicants may source other funding and/or sponsorships to finance the project or business model if

deemed appropriate. • The financial projections shall also identify the key risks that may impact on the launch of this project.

Your proposal will be evaluated based on the following:• Is the business model viable and sustainable?• Does the business plan have a good integration of all necessary elements?• Is the proposal innovative & creative?• Is the presentation of the proposal clear, appealing yet professional?
