Natural Gas can be used in place of gasoline or diesel in vehicles. Advantages of natural gas include:
— Combustion produces fewer undesirable gases than gasoline or diesel.
— More energy per molecule of CO2 produced.
— Does not contain any lead, thus eliminating sparkplug fouling.
— Lower fuel losses, due to closed systems.
— It is safer than other fuels since it is lighter than air and in the event of a spill disperses quickly when released.
— Lower maintenance costs.
Natural gas may be used in traditional internal combustion engines that have been modified or in OEM engines designed to run natural gas. Natural gas may be used alone or in combination with gasoline (duel fuel) or with diesel (bi-fuel).
Natural Gas is stored on the vehicle as a liquid (LNG-Liquid Natural Gas) or as a gas Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). In most cases, how the fuel is stored is not a factor. What is important is that the fuel must be supplied to the engine in gaseous form at specified purity pressure and temperature.
Water, dust, sand, dirt, oils and other contaminants in the fuel can be detrimental to the operation of natural gas engines. The challenge is to develop fuel filters that capture traces of water, oil or other contaminants protecting the engine against damage. In most cases a filter is included which filters the fuel as part of the fuel delivery system. Ahlstrom is actively assessing the technologies used with a view to designing substrates.
The challenge of designing the filter is complicated by the choice of storage and the associated pressures, temperature and flows:
— A typical CNG fuel system is comprised of tank storage, a fuel fill system, fuel lines, regulators and a high pressure fill system. CNG is stored at pressures up to 3,600 psi. Fuel lines are connected to a pressure regulator that reduces engine pressure, where a second regulator controls the engine fuel requirements. CNG is infused with an odor agent so that leaks can be identified by smell.
— The LNG fuel system is a low pressure system designed for normal operating pressure of 230 psi. When LNG needs to be converted for use, it’s drawn from the tank, run through a vaporizer to convert to gas and supplied to the engine at the required pressure.

Dear Customers,
Our Product Development teams continue to be hard at work doing what we do best, exploring new fiber, chemistry and process technologies we can marry together to bring you new and innovative products. Cellulose is still the predominant fiber in many of our best performing products and though it has been used for many years we continue to explore and find unique ways to utilize this versatile fiber. Synthetic fiber usage is growing and whether we optimize these fibers on our wet forming assets or explore polymer forming technologies to bring new synthetic webs, our teams are determined to develop new solutions. Chemistry will always require heavy focus from our teams as we look to improve filter integrity, optimize processing on pleating lines, offer energy savings and make the products safer to handle.
One example where the merger of these technologies is paying off is the 100% synthetic media we are bringing to market for oil applications. Granted, 100% synthetic in itself is not unique, but we believe this wet formed synthetic web coupled with our saturation and chemistry technologies will bring a unique and valued product into the market. A key goal is to avoid the wire mesh and slow co-pleating required in current approaches.
Many indicators point toward the need for more highly engineered products and thus our teams are exploring improved composite materials. So another example is media with unique and engineered pore structures coupled with the right compositing and lamination technologies needed to meet the ever growing demands you face in Transportation Filtration applications.
Of course all these innovations and developments do not happen on their own. We have a diverse and experienced group of Product Development professionals. This is a passionate group that takes great pride in the work we accomplish. We work hard to meet the regional challenges we face but mostly we are a global team collaborating and sharing our know-how and expertise to meet the demands of you, our customers. A word from Kent Williamson, VP Product Development
The product development leadership team
Biju John has been with Ahlstrom for six years. He received his Masters in Chemistry (1996), Polymer Engineering (2000) and an MBA (2007) from Panjab University, Indian Institute of Technology and Macquarie Graduate schools respectively. During his career at Ahlstrom Biju has had roles spanning Sales and Sale Service in India and Product Development in Korea. He is currently located at the Product and Technology
Development Center (PTDC) in Shanghai managing Product Development for Transportation Filtration, Asia.
Marcelo Polozzi has a long history with the company, joining MD Nicolaus in 1988 in Louveira as a Laboratory Assistant. Ahlstrom acquired MD Nicolaus in 1995 where Marcelo spent time in Quality, became Production Assistant in 2001, Production Coordinator in 2004 and Process Coordinator in 2007. Most recently Marcelo served as PD/TCS Coordinator from 2010 until taking his current role as PD Manager, South America in 2014.
Marcelo has degrees in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from Padre Anchieta University, Brazil.
Dan Hennessy has been with Ahlstrom for fourteen years and is PD Manager for North America. Prior to joining Ahlstrom Dan gained over 16 years of experience in the specialty paper industry while holding a BS in Chemistry from Northland College (Ashland, Wisconsin) and Master’s Degrees in both Chemistry (University of Minnesota at Duluth) and Paper Science from the Institute of Paper Chemistry (IPC) in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Marco Venturello received his PhD in chemical engineering in 1999 from Polytechnic of Turin. He spent six years in the plastics division of an interior automotive part company and three years in roofing business in various management roles. Marco joined Ahlstrom in 2009 to support the release & labeling division then moved to Transportation in 2011 taking responsibility for TCS, Quality and PD in the Turin facility. Since 2012 Marco is the PD
Manager for Transportation Filtration, Europe.
Praveen Jana a Textile Engineer from Bangalore University, India graduated from University of Tennessee in 1998 with an MS degree in Textile Science. He joined Ahlstrom Filtration’s Technology group in 2007 as Project Manager. His work at Ahlstrom includes Process and Product Development focused on medium to longer term key innovations and technologies. Prior to joining Ahlstrom, he worked in the R&D department of Pall
Corporation for 9 years where he developed process and products based on Meltblown technology.
Andrew Goodby, who received his PhD in Chemistry in 1995 from Salford University, England, joined Ahlstrom in May 1999 in Chirnside, Scotland. During his career at Ahlstrom, Andrew has been involved in the development of wipes and food and medical products. In addition Andrew spent time as part of the Corporate Research and Innovation Group. In 2012 Andrew joined the Transportation Filtration team as Project Manager
located in North America focusing on medium to longer term key innovations and technologies.

Fully Synthetic Oil Filter MediaClean engine oil keeps the engine performance consistent and protects the engine from impurities. Performance requirements for Oil filters are increasing along with higher performance demands and more challenging environments. Some examples are: higher engine temperatures, more challenging environments with turbo, direct injection, start/stop technologies.
These trends will continue to raise the performance requirements for filter media as well as the need toward more synthetic and high performance filter media.
We have been developing new filter media to fulfill these needs. We are now developing a fully synthetic filter media which is able to hold its structure in hot temperatures without any support layer. This new product will be able to offer significant cost savings in terms of materials used and in the processing time.

– In air intake filter applications a fire risk or even the chance of an explosion has a high likelihood of occurrence
– If media is not flame-retardant, embers burn the media or even ignite the filter, resulting in expensive engine damages or possibly even worse scenarios

– Majority of the flame-retardant solutions are “washable”, meaning that if an air filter is treated with water (high humidity environment), it loses its flame retardant properties

Marco Levi was appointed President and CEO of Ahlstrom Corporation as of June 16, 2014. Mr. Levi (b. 1959, Italian citizen) joined Ahlstrom from a leading materials company Styron where he was Senior Vice President and Business President of Emulsion Polymers. Prior to that, he has held various senior management positions at the Dow Chemical Company.

Ahlstrom’s new Product & Technology Development Center in China inaugurated
Ahlstrom celebrated the inauguration
of the new Product & Technology
Development Center in Shanghai,
Minhang District, in eastern
China at the end of May 2014.
