What is a participle?
• A participle is a word formed from a verb that can function as part of a verb phrase.
Kinds of participles
• Present participle: A present participle is a verb that ends with –ing.
• Past participle: A past participle is a verb that ends with –ed.
Examples
• Present participle:The soccer players played a soccer gameyesterday and won.The criminal robbed a bank the past week.
• Past participle:The girl is swimming in the pool.The man is playing basketball with his friends.
What is a regular and irregular verb?
• Regular verbs: They always end in –ed.
• Irregular verbs: The ending of the word always changes.
