What is a participle?

• A participle is a word formed from a verb that can function as part of a verb phrase.

Kinds of participles

• Present participle: A present participle is a verb that ends with –ing.

• Past participle: A past participle is a verb that ends with –ed.

Examples

• Present participle:The soccer players played a soccer gameyesterday and won.The criminal robbed a bank the past week.

• Dangling participles are bad because they could change the meaning of your sentence and make the sentence not make sense.

• Example:Bad sentence- Lying out on the grass, the trees were beautiful. Good sentence- Lying out on the grass, I thought the trees were beautiful.
