RACE OFFICIALS

Race Director for the Sulphur Springs Trail Run is Eric Cameron. Eric is formerly the President of the Burlington Runners Club and Co-Director of the Iroquoia Trail Test races.

This event is presented by the over 250 members of the Burlington Runners and is one of four club events (Robbie Burns 8K, Good Friday Road Races, Iroquoia Trail Test) put on each year. The Burlington Runners are a not-for profit group and has been in existence since 1973.

We sincerely hope that each of you will derive the same enjoyment from the beautiful Dundas Valley Conservation Area on race day that our club runners do on a weekly basis throughout the year.

The Burlington Runners (www.burlingtonrunners.com) are delighted with your participation in this race and will work to ensure that your race day experience is as wonderful as possible. We however make no claims to how clean you will be by the time you reach the finish line. Refer to the club website and this guide for all other event details and updates.

If you have any questions after reading the race information on the website and the Participant’s Guide please contact Eric Cameron, email: [email protected]

On race day, you will need to respect the direction of the race director and his designates. Any inquiries that you have will be directed to them. All decisions of the Race Director are final.

the 100 MILE RELAY for a total of 1240.

There are no qualification requirements for any of the events. EACH PARTICIPANT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EVENT THAT THEY ENTER.

As you are aware the costs of hosting this event are considerable. Cost commitments are made many months in advance of the race and we have adopted a NO REFUND OR 3rd PARTY TRANSFER POLICY if you are forced to withdraw from the event prior to or on race day.

You can switch to another race distance at no charge but we do not provide refunds. All changes must be requested before midnight on Tuesday May 19th 2015.

THE RACE

The Sulphur Springs Trail Run takes place in and around the Dundas Valley Conservation Area in the City of Hamilton, Ontario (formerly the Town of Ancaster). This park is managed by the Hamilton Conservation Authority. All race events will take place on a 20K loop consisting of approximately 97% trails and 3% roads within the conservation area. The 10K event will use only the western portion of the loop.

You should be aware of the ULTIMATE CUT-OFF for each event as per the schedule of events. No one will pull you from their race as long as you can make the ultimate cut-off time listed for your event. 100 Mile runners must complete their seventh lap by 9:00 am (27 hours) on Sunday morning.

THE COURSE AND TRAIL DESCRIPTION

While you are running the Sulphur Springs Trail Run you will be traveling through the beautiful Dundas Valley Conservation Area which is part of the Hamilton Region Conservation Authority park system and includes part of the famous Bruce Trail from Queenston Heights to Tobermory (approximately 800K).

The park is open to the public on race day so be courteous to and aware of other users. This will include runners, bikers, horseback riders and walkers. Bear in mind that you will be running through wilderness and may encounter deer, coyotes, raccoons, skunks and others. IF YOU ENCOUNTER ANY WILDLIFE, MAKE A LOT OF NOISE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO APPROACH ANY ANIMAL .

Photos of previous events can be viewed at the Ontario Ultra Series site (www.ouser.org), through links at www.burlingtonrunners and on the Sulphur Springs Trail Run Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/SulphurSpringsTrailRun).

6

THE START/FINISH AREA

All races start at the ANCASTER COMMUNITY CENTRE at 385 Jerseyville Road, Ancaster L9G 3L5. It is at the end of Meadowbrook Dr & Jerseyville Rd in the former town of Ancaster. The actual Start/Finish, registration area and race headquarters is at the rear of the property in the last parking lot off of Martin Rd (at the last baseball diamond).

PARKING is available at the front and side of the Ancaster Community Centre accessible off Jerseyville Rd. The smaller rear parking area is accessible off of Martin Rd on the west side of the centre. Parking is also available across the street at the Ancaster High School. There is no parking allowed on Jerseyville Road or Martin Rd. Trailers are not allowed on site. There is no reserved parking and all parking is on first come first serve basis.

THE COURSE

Aid Stations will be present at roughly 3K, 9K, 12K, 19K of each loop and at the Start/Finish of each 20K lap. All runners are advised to carry fluid and food.

The basic course is a 20km loop.

100 Mile complete 8 laps of the course

50 Mile complete 4 laps of the course

50K complete an initial “10km spur” followed by two 20K laps

25K complete an initial “ 5km spur” followed by 1 20K lap

10K complete the same “10km spur” as 50km runners

The running surface is 97% prepared forest trail and 3% asphalt. The 20K loop course is entirely runnable. Most runners in the ultra distance events choose to gauge their effort by walking many of the hills. Road shoes are usually sufficient unless the course is muddy. Keep an eye on the Ancaster weather in the week before the race. Usually a day or day of dry weather before the race keeps the mud to a minimum.

There is an elevation gain of 580 meter (1740 feet per lap) or 4640 meters (13900 feet) over the 100 Miles. There are no monster hills but the course is constantly undulating under forest cover. Elevation gain was determined using a ALTA Instrument, sensitive to 1 meter changes in elevation

THE 10 KM COURSE The 10K race heads down Martin Rd from the start to the bottom of the hill and turns right onto Hilltop Tr. It swings left onto the Murray Ferguson Way then connects to the Spring

7

Valley Trail for a short distance before meeting with the left turn at Headwaters Tr. at the top of a modest grade.

Once on Headwaters head west towards Martin Rd and Aid Station #2. After crossing Martin Rd you will proceed west along the Headwaters loop in a counter clockwise direction towards Powerline Road and return back to Martin Road. This almost 7K loop is shaped like a lollipop.

After returning to Martin Road and AS #2 travel south on Martin Rd 400 meters to the base of the hill you came down at the start. Proceed to the top of the hill you will turn left into the first parking area to the finish line. Enjoy the climb.

The 25 KM Race

Runners begin the 25K race by following the same course as the 10K event. They do an initial 5K spur then complete an entire 20K loop of the course. After crossing Martin Rd on the Headwaters Tr runners reach a point about 600m beyond AS#2 where you will be turned around by a race official and head back to the start/finish line via Headwaters and Martin Rd to the Start/Finish and complete the 5km “spur” before beginning the 20K portion of the 25K race.

NOTE: the 50K & 25K races begin at the same time. ONLY THE 25K RUNNERS WILL BE TURNING AT THIS POINT ON THE HEADWATERS TRAIL. 50K RUNNERS ARE COMPLETING THE ENTIRE HEADWATERS TRAIL (doing a 10K spur) BEFORE RETURNING TO THE START/FINISH. Miss this turn and you will run an extra 5K.

The 20K loop is described in detail in the 50/100 Mile section. The loop is slightly longer than 20K.

The loop is actually 20.1599km. It begins in the most northerly parking lot by the baseball diamonds at the Ancaster Community Centre.

The 20K loop begins by heading north (downhill) on Martin Rd to the bottom of the hill and turns right onto Hilltop Tr. It swings left onto the Murray Ferguson Way and connects to the Spring Valley Trail Tr junction. Runners proceed along Spring Valley Tr where it connects to Headwaters at 1.4K. Continue straight ahead along Headwaters a short distance and turn hard right (sharp uphill) onto Lookout Tr. Stay on Lookout Tr through the “enchanted” pine forest until it reconnects with Headwaters Tr. Stay on Headwaters for 350m to Mineral Springs Rd. Turn right onto the Mineral Springs Rd. Move to the far shoulder (facing traffic) and proceed 200m to AS #1 (Gatehouse). You will proceed to the AS#1 through an opening in the fence at the corner of Sulphur Springs Rd & Mineral Springs Rd.

You will return along this section of road after completing the east end of the course. The road will be signed as motorists are on the road. Please run facing the traffic while on this section of the course.

Page 8: PARTICIPANTS’ GUIDE - Burlington Runners...You should be aware of the ULTIMATE CUT-OFF for each event as per the schedule of events. No one will pull you from their race as long

8

After leaving the AS #1 (Gatehouse) you will proceed through the parking area and join the Main Loop. Turn downhill at the first trail split beyond the aid station and follow the Main Loop. Cross the bridge at the bottom and bear left up the hill. You will pass through the Merrick Orchard prior to connecting to the Monarch Trail heading west towards the Sulphur Creek bridge crossing.

To reach the bridge you will bear left off the Monarch Tr at this point. The next 400 meters is the trickiest footing on the course as you proceed downhill to Sulphur Creek. A natural spring in the side of the hill often sees this section being muddy, slippery and always steep. The trail bears left at the bottom toward the creek following the tape and trail markings. You will cross the creek (this bridge was built in 2006 by the Burlington Runners built in conjunction with the Dundas Valley Conservation area and the money used to build this bridge came from this race and its participants).

Turn left after crossing the creek and follow the markers around and up a sharp incline to the Sulphur Creek Tr. (This is one of the major changes from the former course. You will no longer head east to the Turnbull Road Aid Station but immediately turn west near the top of the climb to the Sulphur Creek Trail).

When the Sulphur Creek Trail meets the Main Loop turn right and follow it 1.6km back to AS #1. After leaving AS #1 exercise caution and face traffic running along Mineral Springs Rd back to the Headwaters Tr. Follow Headwaters Tr from Mineral Springs Rd. bear left to the Reforestation Trail beyond the park notice board.

Proceed clockwise around Reforestation Tr for 1K. Follow Reforestation Tr almost completely around. At the top of the last climb turn left for 100 meters onto the G. Donald Tr and follow it in a counter clockwise direction from the first trail split. Watch for trail markings on the uphill section a well marked right turn. This short 100m downhill single track trail brings runners to Martin Rd. Turn left (south) on Martin Rd and proceed 1K to AS #2 where you turn right (west) onto Headwaters beyond AS#2.

This section of Headwaters is almost 7km and is shaped like a lollipop and is run in a counter clockwise direction from the trail split which is 1.4K from Martin Rd. Bear right and precede uphill towards the Powerline Rd area. You are just shy at 15km at the top of the first hill of the ‘Three Sisters’ and 5K from the finish. Beyond the top of the ‘Three Sisters’ the trail is flat for a short distance along the corn field area then downhill as you proceed back to the ‘Y’ junction and onto Martin Rd (AS# 2).

After returning to Martin Rd and AS #2 you travel south on Martin Rd a few hundred meters to the base of the hill the race came down at the start. At the top of the hill you will turn left into the parking area to the finish line. Enjoy the climb.

The 50 KM Race

The 50km race consists of completing the “10km course” first, followed by two 20K loops of the course.

Page 9: PARTICIPANTS’ GUIDE - Burlington Runners...You should be aware of the ULTIMATE CUT-OFF for each event as per the schedule of events. No one will pull you from their race as long

9

The 50 MILE Race

The 50 Mile runners will complete four (4) laps of the 20km loop. Drop bags can be left at the start/finish/turnaround area on the morning of the race.

The 100 MILE Race The 100 Mile runners will complete eight (8) laps of the 20km loop. Drop bags for AS #1 must be dropped off by 6:00pm Friday for transport to the Aid Station. Start/finish area bags can be dropped off prior to 6:00am start on Saturday. THE 100 MILE RELAY

2 to 8 members may make up a team. The first team member will begin at 6:00am with the 50M & 100M runners. Subsequent team members must begin at the finish line for each lap they are completing. Each member must complete at least 1 full lap. There is only 1 category in this event. Relay members will wear a race belt with the timing chip. This bib must be transferred between team members at the end of each lap. The final runner will return the race belt. Each runner as they complete a lap should collect their finisher’s medal.

THE TRAIL AFTER DARK

Please remember that this is a trail race and much of the area that you will be traveling along during the 100 Mile event is runnable but relatively rugged in a number of spots. Much of the area in between aid stations is accessible only by foot, horse or mountain bike. Please use caution.

Knowledge of the trail offers both physical and mental advantages during the official run. Participants should make a reasonable effort to run as much of the trail as possible prior to race day. Participants in the 100 Mile event should give particular attention to the trail considering most will do a minimum of three laps in the dark when physical and mental energy may be lagging.

Each runner should ensure that they carry at least two flashlights with power sufficient to last 10 hours (LED lights being the best). It is not recommended that you attempt to change bulbs and batteries in the dark. If your light fails, wait for another runner with a light. DO NOT TRY TO FIND YOUR WAY IN THE DARK. If you are the last runner wait for the sweep team or daylight.

WEATHER

Temperatures can range from 5C to 30C on race day. You should come prepared for both extremes on the same weekend. Race day has been rain free for the many years but we have been hit with severe rain on a few occasions. Prior to leaving

Page 10: PARTICIPANTS’ GUIDE - Burlington Runners...You should be aware of the ULTIMATE CUT-OFF for each event as per the schedule of events. No one will pull you from their race as long

10

home check the weather channel for updates in Ancaster and Hamilton, Ontario. If a lot of rain has fallen in the days leading up to the race the trail will become muddy in a number of spots. The vast majority of the trail is under forest cover which can spell relief on hot, sunny days.

TRAIL MARKINGS

Marshals will be on the course from 6:00 am until 11:00 am on Saturday, to guide runners. After that runners will only have their knowledge of the trail and markings to guide them.

Trail marking will consist of bright coloured surveyor’s tape tied to branches, yellow caution tape, stakes with arrows attached and Chem-lights at night.

Double ribbons are placed at turns on the side of the turn. Always look down a trail you are turning onto. You will be able to see the next ribbon.

Run management does its best to provide an adequately marked trail but runners should try from the start of each event to familiarize themselves with trail names and turns. On occasion persons not associated with the event have been known to remove or change markers and glow lights.

The map is available on the club website (www.burlingtonrunners.com). It can be printed and viewed in expanded format to pick up the trail names. You are ultimately responsible to follow the correct course.

DROP OUTS: If you have to retire from the race where your crew is unavailable, try to get to an aid station or have another runner inform the next aid station that you’re having trouble. We will make every effort to get you to the start/finish area particularly if you need medical attention. If you dropout you must notify race headquarters of your DNF.

TRAIL EDIQUETTE: We do not have exclusive use the Dundas Valley Conservation Area during the weekend. Please be courteous and cautious of hikers, mountain bikes and horses. If you wish to pass another runner, ask for “Trail Right” or “Trail Left”. Slower runners must yield the trail to others wishing to pass. Be particularly careful with horses that you encounter along the trail. Horses can be spooked easily by your sudden appearance with dangerous consequences to the rider and you. STOP and step off the trail to let oncoming horses pass and notify the rider if approaching from the rear.

VOLUNTEERS: There will be approximately 80 volunteers on the course during the 30 hours of the event. Many will spend more hours on the course then runners. Please be polite and make a point to thank them. They will do their best.

PERFORMANCE RULES

Violation of any race rules or directives may be grounds for disqualification from this race

Pacers must not carry supplies for the runner and should have their own supply of flashlights, food and water. Pacers only, not crew may accept aid at Aid Stations. Each runner is allowed one pacer at a time. Pacers must remain with their runner at all times and should enter and leave each aid station with their runner. The pacer may assist the runner with supply replenishment while in the aid station; they may not enter the aid station ahead of the runner or depart after their runner in order to speed up the replenishment process.

CREWS: Crews are not necessary at Sulphur Springs. There are five opportunities to visit aid stations per 20km lap. Most are fully stocked with fluid and food. If you feel the need to bring a crew they must adhere to the following. “Crew” is anyone giving material support to a runner during their race. Crews may assist runners only at designated aid stations and must adhere to directions from Aid Station volunteers. Crews must not park in such a way to block or impede traffic flow. 12

50 Mile Race: Pacers may join their runners at the beginning of their final (4the) lap.

10km, 25km, and 50km: No pacers will be allowed during these events. “Muling” by pacers or crews is not allowed. Runners must carry their own supplies.

7. Runners may not store supplies of any kind along the trail aside from their drop bags at official aid stations.

8. All runners are responsible for the actions of their crews and pacers. Everyone associated with the race must comply with all rules including parking and access instructions. Failure to do so may risk disqualification of the runner.

9. Injection of any fluids or drugs during the event will result in immediate disqualification.

10. Littering of any kind is prohibited. All runners, crews and pacers need to respect the natural beauty of the race course and the right of everyone to enjoy it. Littering threatens our continued use of the conservation area. Runners caught littering will be permanently disqualified. This includes carrying litter away from the aid stations and dropping it in the woods.

11. Runners must refrain from any act of bad sportsmanship.

12. Any runner who is unable to finish the race must PERSONALLY inform race personnel of their decision at the nearest aid station. Runners who leave the course without informing aid station personnel will be considered lost. Any search and rescue effort costs will be billed to them.

RISK FACTORS Participation in this event is at the runner’s own risk. The inaccessibility of much of the course will make it difficult if not impossible for medical assistance to reach a runner immediately. Local police have been notified of our event.

Runners should appreciate the risks associated with the run and prepare accordingly. Risks include renal shutdown, heat stroke, hypothermia, injuries from falling, wildlife hazards, vehicle hazards, risks associated with low sodium chloride counts, muscle necrosis, overuse injuries, common fatigue, poison oak and ivy and getting lost.

AID STATIONS

ALL RUNNERS ARE ADVISED TO CARRY FLUID AND FOOD DURING THE RACE. Aid stations are roughly 3K to 6K apart along the course.

There will be five stops during the 20 km loop. You will pass through AS #1 and AS#2 twice per lap. Aid will also be available each lap at the start/finish. All Aid Stations will be

Page 13: PARTICIPANTS’ GUIDE - Burlington Runners...You should be aware of the ULTIMATE CUT-OFF for each event as per the schedule of events. No one will pull you from their race as long

13

fully stocked with a wide range of fluid and foods. They will have a variety of fluids and food out during Saturday morning.

As lunch hour approaches sandwiches, boiled potatoes and heartier food will be available for runners in the 50K, 50M and 100 Mile events. Hot food, coffee and tea will be available throughout the night. Keep this in mind at AS #1 and #2 as you will return to them. Aid station staff can prepare things for you on your return trip.

DROP BAGS

100 Mile runners must drop their bags for AS#1 (Gatehouse) by 6:00pm on Friday at the Start/Finish area . They will be taken to the AS#1 for you. You will be through this aid station at the 3K and 9K point of every lap. The Start/Finish drop bag you will see at the 0km and 20km point of each lap. These bags can be dropped under cover prior to the race beginning on Saturday morning. You will have access to them throughout the race.

Clearly label your bag. It will be easier at night to identify it when a hundred bags are on the ground.

Do not use paper bags, shoe boxes or any paper-like products as they deteriorate when wet. Distinctive colors work well.

Please make generous use of the garbage containers. Leave nothing in the park.

It is strongly recommended that you place warm clothing, extra flashlights and any special needs that you may require in your drop bags. Avoid glass and perishable items.

Run management is not responsible for lost or damaged drop bags and their contents. The bags from AS#1 will be returned in a timely manner to race headquarters once you have passed through for the last time. Bags left behind will not be returned.
