Ours is a culture of curiosity and openness to new ideas. Our Breathe programme is central to a holistic approach to education where mental and physical wellbeing go hand-in-hand with academic attainment. We are leaders in teaching and learning research and at the forefront of digital technology in education. An award-winning careers programme is bolstered by an established Residency programme, and Putney leavers go on to the finest institutions in the UK and abroad, including Oxbridge, Central St Martin’s and the Royal Academy of Music.

As part of the school’s commitment to cross-

curricular learning and STEAM education, a new Science, Music, Drama and Debating Centre is

scheduled to open in 2021. It will be a space for pupils and staff to come together to learn, to

discuss and to perform, enhancing what is a truly 21st century education.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Biology Team

Biology at Putney is about developing a wider appreciation of the role of life in shaping the world around us. We aim to open up the minds of our students to the importance of Biology at a time when opportunities provided by rapid advances in the capacity of technology to manipulate biological systems combine with challenges presented by the ever increasing impact of human activities on the environment. Experimentation and discovery is at the heart of our approach; we are supported by an excellent team of specialist technicians and we take full advantage of the excellent laboratories, resources and facilities we have here to give our students the best environment to investigate, discover and learn. We take every opportunity to extend our students beyond the curriculum. All students in Years 7 and 8 are invited to our weekly Science Club, and our year 9 and 10 students regularly take part in the Society of Biology challenge. Students from Years 9 – 13 are welcome to attend our thriving weekly Medical Society, and we offer weekly workshops on topical issues in Biology to Sixth Form students considering pursuing the subject at University. Sixth form students enter a variety of national competitions: in 2019 two of our students were finalists in the unsung heroes of science video competition run by Oxford University, and in 2020 five of our students achieved gold medals in the Royal Society of Biology Olympiad. All members of the department contribute to the extensive support that we offer our University applicants, including those applying to Oxbridge or medicine for their challenging entrance examinations and interviews. We run a range of educational visits; year 7 visit Kew Gardens, Year 8 visit Marwell Zoo, Year 9 visit the Science Museum, Year 10 attend lectures at a range of academic institutions in Central London, and our Sixth Formers attend a residential Biology field trip in Pembrokeshire which provides the opportunity to visit the Puffin colony on Skomer Island. We look to develop our students’ ability to communicate their understanding of science: each year a group of Sixth formers are selected to assist with the running of a Junior School science club, where students can demonstrate and explain a wide range of experiments to younger students. Science subjects are amongst the most popular subjects in the Sixth form, and our students go on to study the Sciences at the top institutions both domestic and abroad. In 2020 three of our Sixth form students have received offers to study courses related to Biology at Oxbridge, and twelve have received offers to study medicine at University.
