How does work ?DaytimeOperation
IntheSummermonths,perimeterwindowscanbe
utilisedtoaidcrossflowventilation.Withfreshaircoming
inthroughthewindowsonthewindwardsideofthe
building,staleairwillbeexhaustedthroughthepassive
stackelementoftheWINDCATCHERsystem.Warmair
willnaturallyrisetoceilinglevelbutatthesametimeany
prevailingwindontheWINDCATCHERsystemcarries
asupplyoffreshairdownintotheroombelow,thereby
slightlypressurisingthebuildingandincreasingthe
outwardflowofstaleair.
Bythemovementofexternalairatroof
level,anegativeorsuctionzoneis
alsocreatedtoonesideofthe
Monodraughtsystemthatservesto
encouragetheextractionofstaleair
toatmosphere.
NightTimeandMid-SeasonOperation
Duringmid-seasonsandintheeveningsoratweekends,whenthe
buildingisperhapsnotbeingused,theWINDCATCHERsystem
isnotdependentonopenablewindowsorventsinthesideofthe
building,whichallowsthebuildingtofullysecure.
Withallexternalwindowsclosed,theMonodraught
WINDCATCHERwillstillcontinuetooperateprovidingallthe
benefitsofthis"freeairconditioning".Thisisparticularlyimportant
atnighttimetoprovidefreecooling.Volumecontroldampersat
thebaseofthesystematceilinglevelwillpreciselycontrolthe
amountofairflowthroughthesystem.Iftheinternaltemperature

canbecontrolledbyeithertemperatureorCO2sensors,
dependingupontherequirementsofeachspecific
application.Rainsensorsareincludedasstandard.These
panelscanservemultipleroomsandaresuppliedinfour
standardconfigurationstomeettheprojectrequirements.

AutomaticControl
TherearethreebasicmethodsofcontrollingtheMonodraughtWINDCATCHERnaturalventilationsystem.
CO2Inthecaseofdenselypopulatedareasofabuilding,suchas
classrooms,conferenceroomsorsocialareas,CO2sensors
arerecommendednormallysetto1500ppm,tobeusedin
conjunctionwiththetemperaturesensors.
Manual Override Eachroomhasamanualoverride,whichformspartof
thetemperaturesensor.Thisconsistsofapushbutton
arrangementwiththreeLEDlightstogivetheenduser
completecontrolovertheirventilationstrategy.Thesystem
automaticallyrevertstoitspre-programmedsettingaftera
20minutedelay,orcanbeconfiguredto1or3hours.
TheWINDCATCHERcanbesuppliedwitha
Semi-AutomaticControllerthatalsoallowstheenduserto
controltheopeningorclosingofthedampers
usingthepushbuttonoverrides.The
automaticcontrolsystemopensthe
damperarrangementwhentheinternal
temperaturerisesabove20°C.Below
20°Cthedamperswillbegintoclose.
However,atanytimetheusercanoverride
thedamperpositionusingthepushbuttons.
Semi-AutomaticControl
Thisisthemostbasicmethodofcontrolwithmanual
dampersoperatedbyaleveratceilingdiffuserlevel.
Ingeneraltermsthismeansthatdampersarenormallyleft
fullyopenduringsummermonthsandonlypartiallyopen
duringwintermonthstoallowtrickleventilation,butstill
allowfullendusercontrol.

TheiNVentsystemisabespokein-housedesignednatural
ventilationmanagementsystemforupto4zonesof
SOLA-BOOST®orWINDCATCHERsystems.Utilising
ourseasonallyadjustedproportionalcontrolbasedon
temperatureandCO2.
Theunobtrusivelookallowsthesystemtobesitedall
aroundbuildingsratherthanjusttheboilerroom.This
meanseachpanelcanbelocaltothezonesitcontrols
minimisingcabling.
iNVent: Intelligent Natural Ventilation control system
Classroomsandotherteachingspacesareoneofthemain
areaswherenaturalventilationisvitalforthewellbeingof
theoccupants.TheGovernmentguidelinesonventilation
foreducationalbuildingshavechanged.TheDfEE
document,BB87,concentratedoninternaltemperatures
astheoverridingfactortodetermineventilationlevels.
However,BB101concentratesmoreonairqualitythan
oninternaltemperatureandprovidesguidelineson
acceptablelevelsofCO2overthecourseoftheSchool
day.Afigureof1,500partspermillion(ppm)asan
averageoverthedayhasbeenadoptedinthedocument,
althoughtheupperlevelis5000ppm.However,BB101
stillreferstoacceptableinternaltemperaturelimitsandall
Monodraughtventilationschemestakethisintoaccount.
Duringthesummerperiod,temperaturelevelswill
betheoverridingfactorbutinthewinter,CO2levels
willdictatetheamountofventilationrequired.The
MonodraughtWINDCATCHER®automaticcontrolpanels
arelinkedtotemperatureandCO2sensors,toensure
therequirementsofbothBB101andBB87aremet.
WINDCATCHERsystemsarealsoidealforproviding
ventilationtoothernon-teachingareas,suchas

The£23mAcademyincentralLondonconsistsof3-storeybuildings,whereitwasnecessarytoprovidenaturalventilationnotonlytothetopfloorbutalsotothetwofloorsbelow.MonodraughtWINDCATCHERsystemswereusedtoprovideasustainablesolutiontoachieveventilationtodeepplanClassroomsonmultiplefloors.ThetopfloorClassroomsareservedby800mmunits,positionedinthecentreofeachroom,whereasgroundandfirstfloorsareservedbyrectangularunitsmeasuring1300mmx450mm,connecteduptointernalblockworkventilationshaftsformedinthewallsofthecentralcorridors.
ThedemandsonDesignersforsuchProjectsisconsiderable.Schoolsininnercitiessufferfromevenhigheradverseexternalambient
conditionsthantherestofthecountrybutthedemandforenergyfreesolutionsisevengreater.
Acounterargumentputforwardagainsttheuseofnatural
ventilationforinnercitySchoolsisthequestionofair
pollutionrelatedtoairquality.Monodraught’sanswertothat
isthatchildrenstillhavetotraveltoSchool,theyoftenwalkto
School,andtheystillprobablygoouttoplaybetweenClasses!
Thealternativecostoffiltrationandcoolingbymechanical
meansforsuchSchoolswouldbeimmense.

appropriatetechnicalsolutionandalsometourpragmatic
agendaonotherissues.Theyarecosteffectiveandprovide
alowenergypassivesystemwithgoodgreencredentials.”

thefullrangeofWINDCATCHERnaturalventilationsystems,
togetherwithvariousinsulationthicknesses.
TheBREestablishedthatinitsstandardformat,thestyleof
theWINDCATCHERsystemhastheeffectofreducingnoise
transmissionby15dBascomparedtoanopenwindow.
However,byincorporating25mmofacousticliningtothe
airpaths,afurther11dBwasachieved.Thechartshowsthat
onlargersystems,agreater
thicknessofinsulationfoamhas
theeffectofgreaterattenuation.

Throughoutthesummerof2004,PhilEvans,thenewlyappointedFacilitiesManageratImperialCollege,London,wasfacedwiththeproblemofhowtoovercometheproblemsofsevereoverheatingthathadplaguedtheCollege'sLibraryfortheprevious10years,mostparticularlyinthesummermonths.Thesituationwasexacerbatedbythefactthatthewholeofthetopfloorofthebuildinghadfullheightglasscurtainwallingandtheexistingmechanicalventilationsystemseemedunabletocope.

The Priory Neighbourhood CentreClient:Hastings Borough Council
