Lyseng is a pleasant name because Iys means light. On early maps it was spelled Ljoseng. Today there are two Lyseng farms, one is Lysenghaugen or North Lyseng, the other is South Lyseng; in earlier days these were all one farm. The timber lands and summer pastures that belong to these farms are in the mountains. On the Lyseng farms old log houses, in excellent condition, help to form a picturesque group of buildings. They stand at the top of a foothill range with mountains rising behind them and a far distant view of the snow-capped mountain of Gotunheimen. The view downward includes the Sebufjord, the white church, the buildings at Skrautval and the ancestral homes of many of the people listed in this book: Sebu, Braaten, Holdal, Dahlen, Aabol, Bonli, and Skrutvold. The present owner of our ancestors' farm, N. Lyseng, is a distant relative, Eivind Haugelid.

DESCENDANTS OF ENGEBRET KNUDSEN L YSENG. 1/26

1794 - 1/10 1871 ENGEBRET KNUDSEN LYSENG m. 1797 - 6/25 1877 MARIT ElllNGSDA HER HOLDAl.

All the descendants of this couple through generation VI are named in this book: In 1868 they emigrated, going to Minneola, Goodhue County, Minn., to their son Elling Engebretson. All their children finally emigrated except Marit Hong, an invalid, who was living in Gudbrandsdalen. Engebret died in 1871 and was buried at Minneola Church, church records, p. 250, No.9. After Engebret's

. death, Marit Ellingsdatter Lyseng went to live with her daughter Anne, Mrs. Niels Fylken, at Valders, Wis. The county records, Vol. 2, p. 20, and the Faith Lutheran Church records report her death on June 25, 1877. She is buried in an old Lutheran Cemetery there. Her estate in Norway was-settled 4/15 1880.

The estate of Engebret Knudson Lyseng was located in Norway.

His son, Elling, handled matters for the American heirs; his correspondence was from Wanamingo, Minn. Following are two quotations from the final report of the Probate Court in Skrautval, Norway. "Engebret Knudsen Lyseng died Jan. I Oth this year in the State of Minnesota, the United North American Free States. Elling Engebretson Lyseng, son of the deceased, gave the names of the heirs as follows: 1 son Knud Engebretson. 2 son Elling Engebretson. 3 daughter Anne Engebretsdatter, of age. 4 daughter Ingeborg Engebretsdatter, of age. 5 Marit Engebretsdatter, of age. Gjertrude married to Andreas Olson Lyseng (Norway). 7 daughter Marit Engebretsdatter (invalid, widow) who resides at the farm Hong in the vicinity of Lillehammer, Norway." Part of the final statement of the division of the estate, page 10, says "Funds allotted as follows: To estate widow, Marit Etlingsdatter, in the United States of America, -! part of the total funds." The widow Marit Ellingsdatter and the other heirs in USA gave the Power of Attorney in Norway to Ole Olsen Skrutvold and later to Tollef Leikren. The original document of the probate proceedings of the Engebret K. Lyseng estate has been presented to the Norwegian American Historical Association in Northfield, Minn. by one of his descendants, Mary Hendrickson Rustand. A facsimile of some of the original document is shown on page 100 in this book.

Engebret Knudsen Lyseng and his wife Marit Ellingsdatter have been commemorated by descendants at a Centennial Observance Meeting held on the campus of St. Olaf College, Northfield, August 17th and 18th, 1968, one hundred years after Engebret and Marit arrived in USA. They were the oldest of the family to come to America. At the time of the Centennial meeting the descendants dedicated a new monument to the memory of these great-great~ grandparents in the Minneola Church cemetery in Goodhue County, Minn., where Engebret Knudsen Lyseng is buried. At the same meeting this Family History Book was first available.

The book Valdres Soga, page 364, records the sale of North Lyseng farm in Norway to Engebret's oldest son Knut, who sold it to his sister Gjertrude, who sold it to her daughter Marit, who sold it to other relatives when she emigrated.

DESCENDANTS OF ANNE E. LYSENG THORSON FYLKEN

II. 1. 1818 - 1898 ANNE ENGEBRETSDA HER LYSENG married twice, 1816 - 1853 OLE THORISSEN (THORSON), 1821 - 1898 (2) NILS N. FYLKEN. Anne was born and reared at North Lyseng farm in North Aurdal, Valdres, Norway. She was married in Skrautval church. In 1856; when she was a widow, she sold her property and emigrated with her four small children. At that time the trip was difficult and dangerous. She went to relatives in Manitowoc Co., Wis. In 1858 Anne married Nils N. Fylken and lived in Liberty Twp. Anne and Nils are buried at the Valders West Cemetery of the Faith Lutheran Church at Valders, Wis., see page 5 of the church records. Also see the county records, Vol. 6 - Index, pp 50 and 85.

Anne's grandson, the Rev. Oscar Olson, describes Anne as "a typical Norwegian immigrant, industrious, resourceful, kind, honest and reverent, a grandmother they were proud to honor and remember". The names and records of Anne's children follow.

• III. 1. 1846-1865 ANNA O. THORISSEN m. HARALD THORSON 1841-1920. The

records of the Faith Lutheran Church at Valders, Wis. show that Anna was married to Harald Thorson on Dec. 26, 1864. In 1865 they moved to Northfield, Minn., where Harald and his brother Knut had a store. Anna and her child died in child birth in 1865. See page 164, Valdresser i Amerika, the 1922 Aarbok, an article by Nils Flaten.

Harald Thorson was born at Dovre farm, in North Aurdal, Valdres. He emigrated in 1857 to Manitowoc, Wis., moved ro Northfield, Minn., later to St. Paul, and then to Elbow Lake, Minn. He was very industrious and shrewd and so became the wealthiest of all the Norwegian immigrants in Minn. His chief interests were in store keeping, banking and real estate. He bought and sold wild lands in N. Dak. His success produced enemies as well as friends.

Harald Thorson was one of the chief founders of St. Olaf College. To him belongs the credit for locating that Norwegian Lutheran College on its fine site at Northfield, Minn. He gave St. Olaf College both land and funds during his lifetime, and a bequest for about one million dollars in his will. A beautiful dormitory on the campus is named Thorson Hall.

DESCENDANTS OF MARIT L YSENG HONG

L YSENG - SEBO - HONG

II. 2. 7/4, 1821 - 6/27, 1894 MARIT ENGEBRETSDA HER LYSENG m. 11/13, 1814 - 8/22, 1852 NIELS KNUDSEN SEBO HONG.

They were born, reared, and married in the Skrautval community in Valdres. Niels bought the farm South Hong in Oier, Gudbrandsdal, and they moved across the mountains to that pleasant sunny farm. Life was good to them for a while. It changed suddenly, however, because Niels was drowned while crossing the river on a cattle raft in a storm, and the first born son was drowned in a well. The Sebo-Hong children were: 1845 Kari N. (Rustad), 1847 Knud N. Hong, 1849 Engebret N. Hong, and 1851 Klemmet N. Hong. Their records are placed with those of the Sebos, their father's family, beginning on page 43 in this book. The widow, Marit, married again. Her additional records follow.

L YSENG - OUROM - HONG

II. 2. 1821-1894 MARIT E. LYSENG-HONG, a widow, married 1823-1860 JOHANNES KNUTSON OUROM (HONG). Johannes was a kind neighbor, who moved to South Hong farm, r and helped Marit take care of the farm and all the children his step children as well as his own. A tragedy befell this family too. Johannes died suddenly in 1860. His death, added t~ the grief caused by the-drowning of her first husband and her first son, was more than Marit Hong could endure. She turned to religion for consolation and lost all interest in material things. Later she became an invalid, unable to care for her children and her home. Her children went to live with various relatives. Marit Hong's brother, Knut E. Lyseng, and his family moved to Hong farm to take care of Marit and her farm. On Nov. 10, 1864, he sold South Hong farm to Amund Madson Amodt with a contract that they or' their heirs would care for Marit to the end of her life. She is buried in the church yard at Tretten, where her descendants have placed a monument for her. Amund Arnodt's descendants Elise and Olaf Offigstad, and their daughter Randi and her husband Olav Storegard still own the Sydgar Hong farm, as it is called in Norway. The names and records of the Hong-Ourom children follow.

III. 5. 1854-1938 KNUT J. (HONG) OUROM m. SIGRID ELLEVOLD 1858-1902. Knut was born at Hong farm, but was reared by his father's brother, Erik Ourom at Tretten. In 1873 Knut graduated from Teachers Seminary at Hamar, Norway. He taught and directed the same school in Rendalen for 50 years. In Knut's home the large kitchen served as a workshop for book binding, wood working, and carving as well as for study and music. Nearly all the sons sang and played the violin. Knut made several violins for his family. One of his grand children in Norway wrote, "Knut Ourom was a church and school board official. He was often engaged by the legal courts as a 'domsmann', meaning a man who judges others, (not exactly the same as an American judge or juror.)" Knut and Sigrid had 1 daughter and 8' sons: Johannes, Gudrun Hoye, Bjarne, Erling, Ivar, Magne, Peter, Knut and Sigmund. Only 2 emigrated, Erling and Ivar. All their records follow.

Ladies brought food and men paid 25c each. Ivar played his fiddle for the dancing. He played at school houses called Mistletoe, Sanfordine, and Valentine. The worst hardship the settlers encountered was the depression of the "dirty thirties" 1932-1937. Ivar and Ida had 7 children: Richard, Donald, Lorraine, Adeline, Iris, Dorothy, and Vivian. III. 8. 1859-1930 MATHEAS (JOHANNESON) JOHNSON HONG m. 1865-1908 (BETSY) CHRISTINE JULSON. Matheas (Mathias) was born at South Hong farm near Tretten, Norway. He was reared by his father's sister, Martha Ourom, and her husband Andreas Prestegaarten. They brought him to USA when he was 10. From La Crosse, Wis., the party walked 70 miles to the land they were to homestead near Osseo. When Matt was grown he bought a farm near Osseo and he and his wife never moved away from it. His grandsons tell tales of the early days when the homesteaders used oxen to haul produce to La Crosse and to carry supplies home again. They drove their cattle to market in summer but in winter they often slaughtered the animals out on the farms and hauled them to town in sleighs taking several days for the trip. It was usually bitterly cold; the men wore coon skin coats and hats and used robes of buffalo or horse hides lined with felt. When families went visiting or to church in their sleighs, the children lay under the robes with hot bricks. In spite of hardships, however, the pioneers usually prospered. Matt Hong was so in-dustrious and thrifty that he was able to help each of his sons buy a farm near Osseo. Ch: Minnie Freng, Edward, Alfred 1., Glen. Their records follow.

DESCENDANTS OF KNUT ENGEBRETSON LYSENG

II. 3. 2/29 1824 - 1/27 1917 KNUT E. LYSENG married 6/101828-6/201909 MARIT E. KOLSTAD.

In 1857 Knut obtained the ancestral Lyseng farm and some other land from his father (see V. S., p. 364). When his sister, Marit Hong, became widowed and ill, he moved his family to S. Hong farm in Tretten, Gudbrandsdalen, to take care of her. After a few years he sold her farm and arranged for her life-time care. He and his family emigrated, leaving Oslo April 11, 1868 on the sailing vessel Hanna Par. On the Atlantic their ship was badly battered by a great storm. Mast and sails were destroyed, and they drifted helplessly while the passengers prayed. Most of their possessions had to be thrown overboard, but Marit kept her beautiful spinning

wheel, a family heirloom. A fishing vessel rescued them, towing their ship into the port of Limerick, Ireland. The townspeople treated them with great kindness, nursing them back to health, while their ship was being refitted. Knut used to say that those kind people must be the descendants of the Norwegian Vikings who are supposed to have settled at Limerick. After seven weeks their ship sailed again for the United States, and Knut Lyseng's family landed at Quebec, and went by train and boat to La Crosse, Wis. which was across the Mississippi River from Goodhue Co., Minn. Knut's only brother, Elling Engebretson, lived in Minneola Township, Goodhue County. Knut's family stayed there for a while.

Knut wanted free or cheaper land for his many sons, however, so the family moved to southwest Minnesota, and established a Lyseng settlement two and one half miles south of Clinton, Minn. Knut and his sons Albert and Knut built their log cabins on "Long Island" (Indian name, Shoetyhuska). Winters were severe in Minn.; once in a blizzard all their cattle were blown away or frozen to death. After that Knut built a large log barn for his cattle with a loft for hay. Knut was a carpenter, wood carver, and blacksmith as well as a farmer. His grand children say they remember that Knut made and sold bells of various sizes and sounds: the smallest for the sheep, the medium size for the cattle, and the largest for the horses. Best of all were the merry sleigh bells. He also made knives, ax handles, yokes for oxen, and looms to sell. His descendants still use the rocking horses he made from shaped logs. I

About 1900 Canada offered free homestead land in the Armena district of Alberta. Kn~x g! ,:~s children sold their farms in Minn., and drove by ""899 ... to Canada. Six members of the family took up home~teads near one another. The rigorous pioneer life that they had experienced in Minnesota was now' repeated in an even less settled land. They endured many more hardships in help~,!w the wilderness. Knut and his wife Marit are buried a -8.'1heir many descendants held a Lyseng reunion in 1960 celebrating the 60th anniversary of their ancestors' arrival in Canada. 1899 ANDERS CHRISTIAN KOLSTAD. The Kolstad farms and families appear often in early Valdres records in Norway, see V. B. 49, 105, 205. Anders was born and reared at a Kolstad farm in Heyerdahl, E. Slidre, Valdres. He and Ingeborg emigrated to Goodhue County, Minn., where they bought a farm near the town of Kenyon and lived there the rest of their lives. All their chlidren were christened at Holden Church. A relative recalls hearing exciting tales of her grandpa's youth, when that "merry gang", the seven Kolstad boys, raced their fast horses far and wide over the county. Four Kolstad brothers married four Hagen sisters, their neighbors, and after their marriages lived on four adjoining farms. Isabel and Anders are buried at Holden Church cemetery near Kenyon. CHAPTER 14

DESCENDANTS OF ELLING ENGEBRETSON LYSENG

II. 7. 1838-1910 ELLING ENGEBRETSON (LYSENG) m. MALINE ANDERSON 1844-1934 (SIRI) SARAH GILBERTSON. Elling was born and reared at Lyseng farm. He emigrated from Gudbrandsdal passing through Quebec to Valders, Wis. The Gyrpen Church records show that at Valders on May 29, 1858 he was a sponsor at the baptism of Knud Knudsen's son. Next he went to the home of his sister, Isabel Kolstad, at Kenyon, Minn. There he was married in June, 1861. His wife, ~aline, died the same year and was buried in Holden Cemetery, near Kenyon.

Elling joined the U.S. Army. The official record of his military service is as follows. "He belonged to Company A 5th Minnesota Volunteers. They were in Indian skirmishes along the Minnesota River in 1862. After that they went south and fought in battles at Redwood, Ft. Ridgely, Ft. Ambercrombie, Ft. Riley and in the Red River expeditions in Louisiana and Alabama. His most note-worthy battles were at Vicksburg, Nashville, Farmington, and Corinth. He

re-enlisted as Corporal in 1864. He was mustered out of service Sept. 6, 1865, when the war ended." Elling was permanently disabled by his army service, and always walked with a limp. He was buried in the Lutheran Cemetery at Maynard, Minn. with full military honors.

After the Civil War Elling bought a farm in Goodhue Co., Minn. for about $50, which was the tax due on it. In 1866 he married Sarah Gilbertson. He was a charter member of Minneola Church near his farm. In the 1870 census, page 308, Minneola Twp. Elling's 3 children are listed. After the death of his father, Engebret Knudsen Lyseng, in 1871 in Goodhue Co., Elling sold his farm there. He joined a caravan of several related families that made a long trek by covered wagon to Chippewa Co. in western Minnesota where free land was available. They located about 15 miles from Montevideo. Elling took a quarter of a section of land, as he was a veteran. The settlers there built their first houses of sad blocks obtained by plowing up the prairie land, because there were so few trees for logs. They built permanent houses of lumber as soon as they could afford to do so.

The Engebretsons were industrious and frugal, and over the years became prosperous in spite. of prairie fires and other disasters. When they stopped farming and sold their farm they gave each of their children $1,000. The Mattsons used their gift to help pay for a new house. The Mullins, the only ones who left Minnesota, went to Oregon to seek their fortunes. Elling bought a house in Maynard, and he and Sarah lived there the rest of their lives. Elling sometimes served the county as a commissioner.

Elling's grandson, Elmer Engberg, recalls that his "gramp" was very handy with tools, and made him a flute out of a gun barrel. Elling sometimes' sang the' marching songs of the Minnesota Volunteers, some of which had been sung in Norwegian. Another grandson, Walter Mattson, remembers that his grandfather told the children Indian stories and showed them the sign language that they had used in trading with Indians. He also told thrilling tales about how his army unit pursued the Indians who had massacred white settlers. On every Memorial Day some of Elling's descendants go to the Maynard Cemetery and proudly salute the flag that the American Legion has placed on the grave of their heroic ancestor.

Elling and Sarah had 7 children. Their names and records follow. III. 1. 1866 Edward Engebretson (Lyseng). Holden Church Record. III. 2. 1868 Ena Engebretson Geist. (lnga Marie) Minneola Church Record.

Mary was the first white child born in Havelock Twp., Minn. The Mattsons homesteaded near Murdock on treeless prairie land. The first years were very hard for the settlers. For winter fuel they often had to burn buffalo chips and the long coarse grass that stuck up above the ice in the sloughs. Ch: Walter, Pearl, George, Merrill, Leonard. Their records follow.
