STEM Talent
How is Malaysia positioned with regards to its STEM Talent pool?
• Ineffective teaching methodology
• Ad-hoc changes in policies
• Low levels of awareness of the demand for
specialised talent
A decline in interest in
Science, contributing to
STEM talent depletion

• The Movement is defined as a group of people
working together to advance their shared political,
social or artistic ideas.
• Was formed through a group of individuals,
agencies and institutions working together to
advance their shared passion on STEM
programmes for the country.
• The synergy gathered through the movement will
gear Malaysia forward through STEM education.
Formation of the National STEM Movement
• To drive the passion in fundamental subjects in
STEM
• To nurture excellent scientists for the country
• To instil students and parents about the
importance of science subjects
• To develop a career path for scientists
Objectives of the National STEM Movement
Proposed activities Strategies Target
STEM Mentor-mentee Program
Partnership between universities, ASM, MDEC, MIGHT, PetroSains, IBM, AIM
Increment of pure science students, one class per year
Malaysian STEM Carnival
Partnership with MDEC & PetroSains National level and 5 zones – Jan, Mar, Jul, Sep, Nov every year
100K participants at national level; 50K in each zone. The most people do science experiment together.
STEM Comic Competition
Encourage school students to visualize STEM problem solving process using comics
A series of learner-generated comics for STEM
Malaysian Young Scientist Competition
Organize state-level Young Scientist Competition. State winners compete in the Malaysian Young Scientist Competition (Adopted from US Science Competition)
Replicate the success of Perak Young Scientist in every state
National STEM Council
Adopt the success of The Royal Society, UK. Afford the institute to be the champion of STEM excellence in Malaysia
Oversee and capture success stories in National STEM Movement
STEM Programs & Initiatives
Proposed activities Strategies Target
Olympiad in STEM Work with SEAMOE RECSAM to send reps to participate STEM Olympiad.
Nurture world-class winners in STEM Olympiad
Career in STEM portal Adopt successful models of Singapore & Univ. of Wisconsin
Inform parents, community & students on STEM career opportunities.
In-service training for STEM teachers
Partnership between Bahagian Pendidikan Guru, UPSI & IBM to offer training to in-service teachers in Pusat Kegiatan Guru
Train The Trainer programme: 30 teachers per zone x 6 zones = 180 trainers
STEM Modules Adopt Teachers TryScience modules in Thailand
A complete set of Malaysia Teachers TryScience modules
National STEM Movement website
Adopt the structure of National STEM Centre, UK and La main a la pate, France (teachers interact with scientists)
Synthesize forum, information, events best teaching & learning, best assessment system
Coffee Table Book for STEM
