Home Based Business: Achieve your financial independence in the global economy of the 21st century
Have you been misled by a good salesman selling a “get-rich-quick” Home
Based Business scheme to you? The fairy tale of The Emperor’s New Clothes has
a few very good lessons that every Home Based Business owner must take note
of.
Most of the Home Based Business owners I have been in contact with have been
misled by somebody trying to sell a new scheme or system to them to solve their
financial problems. Apparently, they can earn big money very quickly and enjoy
a new lifestyle of holiday, travelling and working from the beaches of the world
by joining. They will have a lifestyle that most people can only dream of. All they
have to do is buy into the scheme of the salesperson. Training and support will
be provided and many, many more promises are made to them. Most of these
promises do not materialise.
The Emperor’s New Clothes story starts as follows: “Once upon a time there lived
a vain emperor whose only worry in life was to dress in elegant clothes. He
changed clothes almost every hour and loved to show them off to his people.”
The main motive in the life of this emperor was to be seen and admired by his
people. That is the reason why he spent most of his time planning what clothes to
wear, dressing himself, showing the people his beautiful dresses, and being
praised by his people.
His people realised that this was his biggest goal in life. He cannot hide his
motives; everybody can see them. The scoundrels also learned about it. They
realised that if they can satisfy that driving force or motive of the emperor and
offer him something to their advantage, but pretending it was to be to the
benefit of the emperor, they can make money.
They then approached the emperor and offered him their fantastic product, a
cloth that will be woven especially for him. It will be developed only for him. It
will be unique. Nobody else will or can have something like that. They could
satisfy the main motives or driving forces of the emperor in his life, namely, to be
seen and admired by his people for his unique and beautiful clothes. With the
smooth and convincing salesmanship of the scoundrels, the emperor accepted
their offer. He had to pay a bag of gold coins before the scoundrels were willing
to start working on the cloth. Needless to say, there was no cloth.
Good salespeople are studying our motives in life. They know what we want.
Whether we need it is a different story. They know how to convince us that their
product will solve all our needs. Because they understand our deepest driving
forces in life, they capitalise on it to convince us to buy their products.

When the emperor wore this so-called invisible cloth, everybody was
afraid to tell him the truth. The scoundrels were so convincing with their
story to the emperor who convinced his advisors and everybody close to
him of this fantastic new cloth that everybody close to him was afraid to
tell him the truth about the new cloth and that he had made a wrong
decision listening to the scoundrels. Although the emperor realised that
he might have been taken for a ride, he did not want to admit it initially.
He was too proud to admit a wrong decision. He was instead willing to
make a fool of himself in front of his people. His own pride was most
important to him. He only admitted his mistake much later.
The emperor had the wrong motives. His decision to buy the cloth was
only about himself, his image and prestige. He could not admit that he
had made a mistake because then most of his inner motives would be
exposed. The implications of these wrong motives were that the emperor
made a much bigger fool of himself. If his inner motives in his decision
making were open and honourable, he could have admitted his mistake
much earlier and he would not have been the fool in the eyes of his
people.
Lessons For The Home Based Business Owner • The motives involved in why we are doing something must be honourable and
transparent to those that might be influenced by the decisions we are making.
• In a Home Based Business, our family and friends will be influenced in one way or
another by our activities as a Home Based Business owner.
• Do they support you? Are they aware of what you are doing and for what reason
you are doing it?
• Our motives must not be self-centred and be about prestige or being honoured by
people and we must not do something to be seen or to be living like the Joneses.
• Getting involved in a Home Based Business is not a “get-rich-quick” scheme and
being able to show your new lifestyle to everybody.
• You will have to work, read, and study to learn the tricks on how to make a success
of a Home Based Business and build the business in time.
• The scoundrels (salespeople) are not the guilty party in misleading the
emperor (Home Based Business owner). The emperor had wrong motives that
lead to making the wrong decision.
• If you as a Home Based Business owner complain that the salesperson was
able to sell you a “get-rich-quick” scheme that did not work, you are the
guilty party. Your motives/goals/dreams were based on the unrealistic
expectation that you will get rich quickly. The salesperson exploits that and
grabs the opportunity.
• We must change our motives and have more realistic goals that will prevent
us from falling prey to good salespeople.
• Accept making a wrong decision as soon as possible.
• Accept the implications of wrong decisions. It is easier if other people have
been involved in making that decision.
