Passage 3 (133-136)

Anfield

Anfield is a football stadium in Anfield, Liverpool, Eng-land which has a seating capacity of 45,276 making it the seventh largest football stadium in England. It has been the home of Liverpool F.C. since their formation in 1892. It was originally the home of Everton F.C. from 1884 to 1891, before they moved to Goodison Park after a dispute over rent.

The stadium has four stands: the Spion Kop, Main Stand, Centenary Stand and Anfield Road. The re-cord attendance of 61,905, was set at a match be-tween Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1952. The ground converted to an all-seater stadium in 1994 as a result of the Taylor Report which greatly increased its capacity.

Two gates at the ground are named after former Liv-erpool managers: Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley. A statue of Shankly is situated outside the stadium. The ground is 2 miles (3 km) from Liverpool Lime Street railway station.

Passage 2 (130-132)

iPhone or Android: Apps

In terms of apps, Apple may not have the biggest se-lection any more, but in terms of quality it is still out in front.Apple has a huge selection of games and apps with most major companies and app developers choosing to publish the IOS version of their apps first, before looking at Android. This means that if you want access to the best apps first, then an iPhone is your best bet.

Google’s Play store now offers more apps than Ap-ple’s App Store, though the quality is not as good.Android now has over one million apps available in the Play Store and most of the major apps available on iOS are also available on Android these days. However one of the biggest problems facing Android is security. Not only can people install apps from third-party app stores with dubious credentials, the Play store itself has been shown to be hosting numerous malicious apps. The rise of mobile malware has been almost entirely driven by Android apps as the platform is seen as ripe for exploitation by cyber-criminals.While sticking to well-known apps from reputable publishers is advisable on Android, even these can be spoofed by criminals looking to make money.

Passage 5 (140-142)

Breast cancer

Breast cancer is a type of cancer originating from breast tissue, most commonly from the inner lining of milk ducts or the lobules that supply the ducts with milk. Cancers originating from ducts are known as ductal carcinomas, while those originating from lob-ules are known as lobular carcinomas. Breast can-cer occurs in humans and other mammals. While the overwhelming majority of human cases are in wom-en, breast cancer can also occur in men.The balance of benefits versus harms of breast can-cer screening is controversial. The characteristics of the cancer determine the treatment, which may in-clude surgery, medications (hormonal therapy and chemotherapy), radiation and/or immunotherapy. Surgery provides the single largest benefit, and to increase the likelihood of remission (no further sign of the cancer), several chemotherapy regimens are commonly given in addition. Radiation is used after breast-conserving surgery and substantially improves local relapse rates and in many circumstances also overall survival.

Passage 6 (143-146)

Global Warming

Global Warming occurs as a result of increased con-centration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The main greenhouse gases are water vapor, carbon diox-ide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. These gases do not allow all the radiations from the Earth to escape back into space. This is known as the Greenhouse Ef-fect. This trapped radiation or heat helps to keep the Earth at a constant temperature. Greenhouse effect is thus very important to maintain the temperature of the Earth at a habitable level.

Over the past few 100 years, human have been burning trees and Fossil fuels, thereby releasing millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The increased level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has caused the temperature of the Earth to rise. This, in turn, causes more water to evaporate into the atmosphere. Water va-por is also very good at absorbing heat. This causes the Earth’s atmosphere to become even warmer. Scien-tist have called this effect ‘Global Warming’. They have warned that Global Warming could shift rainfall patterns, raise the sea level and alter the ecological balance.

http://www.publishyourarticles.net/eng/articles/a-short-speech-on-global-warming.html

(4) Water vapor is very good at absorbing heat.

145. What can be inferred of Greenhouse effect?

(1) It should help absorb the radiations from outside space.

(2) It should maintain the temperature of the Earth at the level that living creatures can survive.

(3) It should help prevent carbon monoxide from escaping the atmosphere.

(4) It should help produce more oxygen.

146. Which of the following consequences of the rising temperature of the Earth has not been mentioned in the passage?

Passage 7 (147-150)

RMS Titanic

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April, 1912 after col-liding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, US. The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of more than 1,500 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in modern history. The RMSTitanic was the largest ship afloat at the time it entered service. Titanic was the second of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, and was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast with Thomas Andrews as her naval architect. Andrews was among those lost during the sinking. On her maiden voyage, she carried 2,224 passengers and crew.

Under the command of Edward Smith, the ship’s passengers included some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland,Scandinavia and elsewhere throughout Europe seeking a new life in North Ameri-ca. The first class accommodation was designed to be the pinnacle of comfort and luxury, with an on-board gymnasium, swimming pool, libraries, high-class res-taurants and opulent cabins. A wireless telegraph provided for the convenience of passengers as well as for operational use. Though Titanic had advanced safety features such as watertight compartments and remotely activated watertight doors, there were not enough lifeboats to accommodate all of those aboard due to outdated maritime safety regulations. Titanic only carried enough lifeboats for 1,178 people—slightly more than half of the number on board, and one-third her total capacity.

Thatcher served as prime minister from 1979 to 1990. She was the first and is still the only woman to lead the British government. “It was a most fascinating time of my life, and they were gripping years. We sorted out the economy; people came to have a higher standard of living, a real enterprise economy. We then saw the end of the Cold War. They were fascinating – event after event after event.” Thatcher was sometimes known as “the Iron Lady” because of her personal and political toughness. Her policies, especially some economic ones, earned her support and criticism from the British people. One of her constant allies was the United States. Thatcher and American president, Ronald Reagan worked together on many global issues. That includes the Cold War against the Communist Soviet Union, which Thatcher helped end. Thatcher had suffered from medical issues in recent years. She was 87 years old.
