A message from theCarnival Committee

Chairman

Welcome to Carnival 2018.We often see comments on social media that “Carnival isn’t the same asit used to be”. In many ways that is the way it should be - times changeand events need to reflect the current way of living. The volunteercommittee who organise Carnival strive to maintain the traditions of theevent, whilst making it relevant to today.

We appreciate that legislation over the years has made Health & Safetymore of an issue than it used to be, but running a safe Carnival for you allto enjoy has to be a priority.

We thank all those who enter the procession and run stalls in the recreationground. These greatly contribute to the success of Carnival - and are totallyin the hands of the people of our community. We can create the event andarrange the arena events for groups to showcase their activities, butwithout your contribution Carnival cannot happen.

Our objective is to provide a fun day for our local community, and to raisemuch needed funds for local groups. Help us make it happen, book a stallin 2019, enter your group in the procession - the future of Carnival is inyour hands.

There is a form on page 59 to nominate groups to receive a share ofCarnival profit - we list the recipients from 2017 on page 7.

Finally, please put Saturday 13th July 2019 in your diary for Carnival 2019.Don’t forget to let us have your ideas for the 2019 theme by 31st July, tobe balloted on our website in August.

With its roots back in down town Harlem, swing dance hit the UKduring WW2 with an explosion of jazz and swing that provided anemotional escape for young people. This created a culturalrevolution allowing them to abandon their worries and to immersethemselves in the magic of social dancing and music. Nearly 100years later, the swing dance fever is back uniting and connectingus on and off the dance floor. Click here to find out more.

Whatever your age, join our community, learn to dance, and stepforward in time and on to the dance floor to recreate and transformthis magic called Swing Dance!

Leighton Linslade St John Ambulance is extremely grateful for the wonderfulcharitable donation following the success of last year’s carnival. As the nation’s leading first aid charity, we rely on public support to be ableto equip our team of volunteers with the skills and resources they need tocontinue to keep people safe at local events, such as the Leighton LinsladeCarnival. Our volunteers are highly trained and can be the differencebetween a life lost and a life saved.

Could you save a life?

First aid is such a simple skill, but it has an incredible impact. We wanteveryone to learn it, so they have the confidence to do the right thing in amedical emergency.

We currently have exciting volunteering roles available at the St JohnAmbulance adult unit in Leighton Linslade. We’re looking for people tobecome first aiders with the team - full training is provided and it’s anextremely rewarding way of getting involved with the local community. There are also other non-first aid roles available, such as in fundraising, which are just as important in supporting our work.

The group meets weekly on a Tuesday evening at Linslade CommunityHall, Waterloo Road, LU7 2NR (look for the St John Ambulance sign). Formore information please call the Unit Manager Graham Neale on 07826923685.

Or alternatively, for more details about St John Ambulance, including howto make a donation, volunteering opportunities, and details of training forthe public, schools and businesses, visit www.sja.org.uk or call 0303 0030101.

We were delighted with our donation from the Carnival Committeewhich will go towards our seasonal lunches.

We started this project two years ago. We decided to post invitationsthrough doors throughout the village. Our aim was to invite peoplewho lived alone or who are lonely or isolated to join us for a meal,at no cost to them, and entertainment. We hold these events fourtimes a year.

At our first lunch we welcomed 14 guests and at our latest lunchwe welcomed around 50 people! We are delighted with the supportwe receive from local businesses who donate ‘lucky ticket’ prizesand our local co-op recently included our project in their communitysupport fund.

This project has become a significant event in the lives of those wewelcome to each lunch and we very much enjoy the day along withthem.

Thanks to the carnival committee for donating to us.

Scoil Rince Realta, which translates to The Star School of IrishDancing, was established in September 2015 by Dublin nativeMichelle Gannon in Dunstable, Bedforshire. The school has sinceexpanded and now runs weekly classes in Leighton Buzzard andCaddington with almost 40 dancers from the age of four. We do lotsof public performances at local events, school fetes and parades,as well as attend competitions for those that like to. The boys & girlsin the dancing school have grown in so much confidence, made somany wonderful friends, found a love for Irish dancing they neverknew they had, and become one big dance family. If you would like some more information on Irish dancing classesplease contact Michelle on 07847762733 or [email protected]. We also have a very active Facebookpage which can be found at www.facebook.com/scoilrincerealta .I hope you enjoy our performance today as much as we are lookingfor to doing it.

Autism Bedfordshire was delighted to have been chosen as one ofthe charities to receive a £100 donation following the 2017 Leighton-Linslade Carnival.Autism Bedfordshire is an independent charity whose aim is toimprove the quality of life for autistic children, young people andadults and their families in Bedfordshire. We do this throughproviding a range of social activity and skills groups where autisticpeople can ‘be themselves’ and access activities that are designedand run by specialist trained staff/volunteers. Our helpline andtraining courses help parents better support their autistic childrenand our autism training for professionals improves awareness andacceptance in the community.

Autism Bedfordshire relies on the generosity and support of thelocal community and businesses through fundraising and dona-tions to be able to provide our services to these people in need.We are therefore extremely grateful to the Leighton-Linslade Car-nival Committee for choosing to support our work and allow us tohelp the many autistic people who live in the Leighton-Linslade area.

Beaudesert PTA have supported the school with the Carnivaldonation from last year’s event. It was decided to put the money towards the development of a "EcoScience Garden" in the school grounds of which the whole schoolwill benefit. The donation was instrumental in the development of the pond, twonatural wildlife areas plus a fruit and vegetable growing garden. Itallowed for the provision of essential tools, equipment, seeds andplants needed for our children to get fully immersed in our outdoorlearning environment.Mrs Fitzpatrick (Deputy Head) who led the scheme says ….”We arealready seeing the impact of our outdoor learning areas providinga rich environment for the development of exploration andinvestigation skills in our children and are looking forward to carryingout further works on all the garden areas in the half term afterEaster…”
