You’re invited to a huge opening party offering a whole host of free events across the city. From the opulent Idolize Spiegeltent in Prince Alfred Park to the Old King’s School site, from the riverside precinct to Church Street; Parramatta is transformed by big bands, soulful singers, top DJs and street theatre spectaculars.

Bring the kids down to Prince Alfred Park from 4pm as Holly Throsby and her band kick off the afternoon with a fantastical set of children’s songs from her album See! Kids can join in our workshops, learn circus

tricks and be entertained by roving performers, while your hosts, The List Operators, keep everyone laughing. Across the road, Information and Cultural Exchange (ICE) throws open its doors for free activities for young people.

Notting Hill Carnival DJ, Norman Jay, parks his iconic double-decker bus in EatStreet for a marathon seven hour set of feel good summer tunes, creating an all-ages street party in the heart of Parramatta.

As the sun sets, the city comes alive with wandering performers, musicians, projections and mobile sound systems entertaining you in the parks, on the streets and along the riverfront.

As The World Tipped takes over the evening skyline with its towering presence on Church Street. As the stage literally tips skywards, dramatic film and visuals mix with breathtaking aerial performance and music.

At the Old King’s School site prepare for a wonderful double bill. The evening starts with the Barefoot Divas, six fabulous singers from Australia and the Pacific. Then the mighty brass and swirling violins of Europe’s magnificent Taraf de Haïdouks and the Koçani Orkestar lift off into an exhilarating celebration of the night.

Come on Parramatta – let’s party!

For ten days in Parramatta you can enjoy a full Sydney Festival program of events that not only welcomes local audiences but will also have the rest of Sydney jumping on trains and RiverCats to be where the action is.

Riverside Theatres hosts an exceptional line-up of local and international theatre, music and film while Prince Alfred Park gets it’s very own Spiegeltent filled with music and late night cabaret.

There’s also a massive program of free events, with our Opening Party taking over the streets on January 14, a concert under the stars with Dan Sultan and Busby Marou at the Old King’s School site on January 21, as well as activities popping up all over the CBD.

Watch out for dance performances in crowded shopping areas, art installations literally growing out of empty shop spaces, free films, plus the chance to get involved in workshops and art-making with local artists including Parramatta Artist Studios. And check out what’s on at Switch Digital Arts Centre, powered by Information and Cultural Exchange (ICE).

Visit sydneyfestival.org.au/parramatta or head to our Information and Ticket Booth, open daily January 13-22 at Town Hall Square on Church Street, to find out what’s on.

Forceful and funny, powerful and poetic, this international award-winning contemporary circus is a dazzling exploration of a Czech pub, colourfully fusing acrobatics, dance, theatre, puppetry and live music.

Just as the French have their wine, the Czechs have their beer – and in this fantasy Czech bar closing time gets surreal. With the glazed look of a sober pint, this highly original show throws up bar floozies, upstarts, loners, a pair of acrobatic beer-gutted old pensioners and other champions in their own idiosyncratic world.

Their stories, dreams and bar-side philosophies are spliced with inventive physical comedy and surprise theatrics, told with the force of an intoxicating fairy tale.

Applauded from Finland to China, La Putyka is new pub circus with an accomplished brew of action, poetry and laughter.

Carnival of Souls begins with the vivacious Mary Henry improbably surviving a car wreck. She moves to a small town in Utah to begin a new job as a church organist, but then the nightmare begins…

What better way to experience Herk Harvey’s stunning black and white horror classic Carnival of Souls than with an entirely new live soundtrack and an original score from New Zealand’s leading musical madman Leon Radojkovic?

A brilliant cast, including Chelsie Preston Crayford from Underbelly Razor, breathes new life into the original 1962 characters while a sole foley artist recreates every scary sound effect live on stage.

This is an unforgettable and multi-dimensional production that pumps new blood into old zombies and the 1960s horrors of middle America.

Co-commissioned by Auckland Arts Festival and Christchurch Arts Festival with support from Creative New Zealand and Auckland Council.

Nigerian-French artists Asa and Fefe come to Sydney for the first time.

Asa is at ease as the guitar-clasping soulful singer-songwriter and the pop siren bouncing along on a Motown-ish groove. She has drawn comparisons to Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill with her smoke and honey voice and nod to 60s soul and Afro-beats.

A founding member of French hip-hop band Saian Supa Crew, Fefe has since forged a successful solo career with a stunning debut album that topped the French charts. He presents an explosive live show fusing elements of funk, soul, blues, rock and the odd ballad.

Celebrate the last night of Sydney Festival Parramatta in true style with this free concert under the stars.

Busby Marou open with their cracking harmonies, charisma and musical talents.

Special guest Kasey Chambers is a rarity: an Australian country singer who appeals to both the cities and the towns without needing to pander to one or play up to the other. She has five multi-platinum albums

and one gold album, has won eight CMAA Awards and a staggering 18 ARIA Awards, making her one of Australia’s elite artists.

To round off the night, Dan Sultan and his knock-out seven piece band deliver a dynamic live set that will have you on a music-buzz for the rest of the weekend. With Johnny Cash grunt, Elvis cool and a voice like raw velvet, it’s no wonder audiences everywhere love him.

Born on the Ivory Coast and based in France, Fatoumata Diawara blends jazz and blues with the traditional Wassoulou music of her Malian parents to create her own contemporary folk sound.

Her debut album, Fatou, is a testament to her musical style – the fluid and gracefulAfrican rhythms infused with global influences, led by her lithe and sensual voice. This is a perfect opportunity to see a fresh new talent with a unique sound and a bagful of beautiful self-penned songs.

Out of the Central Australian desert comes a voice striking a chord in the hearts of Australians. Frank Yamma’s rich evocative voice and exceptional guitar skills combined with his brutally honest tales are spine tingling.

When Yamma sings, you listen and travel with him. An initiated Pitjantjatjara man, he sings in his native language and English. His mighty songs, magical guitar playing and deeply arresting voice are all there in his compelling new album, Countryman, produced with David Bridie.

Former lead singer with 90s rockers Verbena, AA Bondy’s recent work has shifted towards a more stripped back alt-folk sound. With beautifully evocative acoustic tunes played on guitar and harmonica, the songs on Bondy’s new album Believers were conjured during and between dreams, in bare rooms, and on the late night streets of America.

From low key folk gems on sparse backdrops to soaring, bold melodies set against his haunting voice – in our era of immediacy, Bondy’s languid, late night music has the power to draw life to a stand-still.

Fierce leading lady Clairy Browne and her harmonising girl group, The Bangin’ Rackettes, have been tearing down the house at venues all over the country since 2009. The nine piece rhythm and blues big band’s original songs take you through northern soul, jump blues, doo-wop, ska and gospel with influences ranging from Etta James, Tina Turner and Prince to D’Angelo and Salt n’ Pepa.

The band recently launched their first 7”single, She Plays Up To You, a moody, emerald green, envy-inspired ditty about that girl who just can’t keep her hands off of your man.

Ed Kuepper is one of Australia’s most distinctive and prolific singer songwriters.

Kuepper co-founded seminal punk band The Saints and experimental post-punk group Laughing Clowns, has toured with Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds and, in a hugely successful solo career, has recorded over a dozen albums in his own name.

Having reunited with drummer Mark Dawson to re-imagine the albums Electrical Storm and Today Wonder, this legend of Australian music comes to Parramatta, revisiting some of his best-loved work and lesser known gems in an evening telling tales of love and longing.

Briefs slams together a beef-caked and disorderly line-up of Australia’s finest performers and mischief-makers in a circus-infused variety show for the not-so-faint-hearted.

In the perfect setting of The Idolize Spiegeltent, this ragtag team of skilful buccaneers reinvent vaudeville and circus, dance and clowning, in an evening of wicked humour, absurdity and blatant displays of flesh.

Raw and savvy, they mix political conscience and theatrical rule-breaking with heaps of clever parody and good old entertainment.

A night out at Briefs is variety in the truest sense – it even features a meat raffle!

Photographer William Yang is renowned for his poignant work, exploring social diversity, belonging and travel.

Intrigued by Facebook and the voyeurism it invites, Yang now opens the shutter on his own life with characteristic wry humour and emotional honesty in this very engaging slideshow.

I Am A Camera sees Yang collaborating for the first time with celebrated composer Elena Kats-Chernin, whose work for live cello and percussion will drive Yang’s deeply-felt narrative and remarkable images.

Once again the award-winning duo crash through all things sensible, with a mad take on the brave new world of cyberspace, that interweb thingo, myface, spacebook and fart-ificial intelligence.

Raucous, slapstick, thoroughly entertaining and interactive, The Listies make adults giggle and kids shriek and squirm. Now the boys go geek, stepping into the virtual World of Wool-craft and Pong computer games, PowerPoint, water pistols and LOLz from the very edge.

It’s the end of sanitised nice kids’ entertainment as we know it!

Ten days of screen treasures that reflect the exceptional, the eccentric and the transcendent in the performing and screen arts.

Reflections commences with London’s National Theatre’s stage production of The Collaborators centring on an imaginary encounter between Joseph Stalin and the playwright Mikhail Bulgakov, and concludes with a dance program including the Bolshoi’s perennial favourite The Nutcracker.

Stephen Fry explores his passion for controversial composer Richard Wagner in Wagner and Me, and the complex world of the enigmatic musical poet and world renowned pianist is revealed in Genius Within – The Inner Life of Glenn Gould.

Reflections also pays tribute to two iconic filmmakers with two Roman Polanski classics and a retrospective selection of masterpieces of Australia’s greatest auteur, Paul Cox.

Two musicians take up more than 20 instruments to present Mike Oldfield’s cult classic Tubular Bells in a unique musical – and sometimes acrobatic – performance.

Oldfield’s beautiful and sprawling progressive Celtic-folk-rock opus shot to number one in charts around the world in 1973-74.

Now multi-instrumentalists Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts have arranged the entire score of Tubular Bells to be played live by just two blokes, bringing the influential masterpiece to life in all its multi-layered madness and subtle beauty.
