In Christ our suffering takes on deeper meaning.

When Simeon recognizes the child Jesus as the Savior, he notes that he will save us through a

suffering that will pierce his mother’s heart. That suffering of the Son of God reveals that, in our

daily sufferings, we can find hope in the Savior who knows what our pain feels like and can give it

deeper meaning. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ First Friday Adoration On the First Friday of February we will have a day of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The

church will be open between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm and everyone will be able to come for longer or

shorter period of time to spend with Eucharistic Jesus. We will begin with Mass at 8:30 am, then

the blessed Sacrament will be exposed for Adoration and prayer. At the end of the day there will be

also Mass at 7:00 pm. There is a sign up sheet at the back of the church so that at least 2 people sign for

each hour to make sure there is always someone present in the church with Blessed Sacrament exposed.

But we invite everyone to come during a day to spend some time with our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

January 29, 2014

To: Priests, Deacons, Secretaries and Pastoral Agents of the Diocese of St. Paul

Reverend Friends, On, Jan. 8, I wrote to request that you make a number of temporary changes to liturgical practices aimed at preventing the potential spread of infection during public celebrations of the Mass. These changes were a precautionary response to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Since that time, we have been monitoring the advice of provincial, national and world health authorities regarding the influenza outbreak. We have also consulted directly with Alberta Health Services. Today, the Archdiocese of Edmonton lifted its restrictions.

It is important that we remain vigilant about the good hygiene practices that have been recommended by public health authorities: wash hands thoroughly and frequently, supply hand-sanitizing solutions in places where public gatherings are held, and encourage anyone who feels ill to stay at home out of respect for their brothers and sisters.

I am satisfied that such vigilance will serve us well, both during this unusual flu outbreak and during the normal upcoming winter flu season. Accordingly, I am now lifting the precautionary restrictions on liturgies that I announced on January 8. Specifically, I invite you to:

Resume reception of the precious Blood from the chalice for those communicants who desire it.

Resume reception of the host on the tongue for those communicants who prefer it.

Resume the practice of shaking hands during the Sign of Peace and when greeting parishioners.

I know that the temporary restrictions have caused distress and discomfort for some parishioners, and I appreciate your co-operation in implementing them. It is gratifying to know that we are prepared to act quickly in the event of a serious outbreak of disease.

In our shared mission to care for our brothers and sisters as Christ cares for us, it is our collective responsibility to keep informed on this issue.

Sincerely in Christ,

Paul Terrio

Bishop of St. Paul.
