The Options Process for studying in Year 10: 2016-2017

“An introduction for students and parents/carers”

At Parkside School we believe in providing a challenging and broad based

aspirational curriculum that offers pathways to meet all learners’ needs and

interests.

All students will follow a core curriculum of GCSE English, Mathematics and

Science, as well as Physical Education and GCSE Religious Studies or GCSE

Citizenship.

Students will then choose 3 additional options

Explaining the Qualifications

GCSE (Level 2)

GCSE examinations are set by different awarding bodies. Syllabuses have

been chosen from a variety of Examination Groups to meet students’

needs.

Examinations are designed to enable students to demonstrate what they

know, understand and can do.

A whole range of skills are tested, not only the ability to recall factual

information.

Grades range from 9 - 1:

EQUIVALENT QUALIFICATIONS

BTEC:

BTECs are a range of qualifications which have been firmly established in

education for many years. They are an exciting but equivalent pathway

through education and are nationally recognised by both employers and

universities.

These qualifications offer a vocational pathway for students.

They provide total flexibility for progression to ‘A’ Level/Advanced

Vocational ‘A’ Level Studies and to Level 3 BTEC qualifications.

Students complete core units which are compulsory and specialist units.

BTEC courses are heavily based on coursework and continuous

assessment; all courses do have an examination component as part of

the course.

Explaining the Qualifications

OCR / Cambridge Nationals: Level 2

These qualifications are for students who have an interest in vocationally-

related learning.

They are equivalent to 1 GCSE 9 – 1 grade.

They do not involve exams and are based on continual assessment and the

completion of portfolios of work.

GCSE Triple Science

Why Choose GCSE Triple Science?

Students will gain a broad understanding of the scientific concepts that

provide a framework for making sense of the world. Science qualifications

are crucial to career pathways and are of great value to universities and

employers alike. Science supports the learning of many other subjects,

including Maths, Geography and Technology.

What Next?

Triple Science leads into A’ levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or the

vocational BTEC Science level 3 course in sixth form. Students will learn

pharmacists to engineers and forensic scientists.

Triple Science GCSE covers a vast curriculum. The three disciplines

GCSE Art and Design What Will You Study?

How to record your ideas, observations and insights. How to develop your

ideas. How to analyse the work of other artists. How to experiment in

different media such as pencil, paint, pastel, clay. How to present a visual

Introduction to Small Business and Building a Business. Focusing on

a variety of elements including entrepreneurs, business plans, ownership,

marketing, basic financial terms and the wider world effecting business.

Investigating Small Business. An in depth study of a business focusing

GCSE Business Studies is a very popular subject at GCSE and one in which

many students do very well. This subject introduces candidates to the

What Will You Study? Component 1 – Computer Systems. The first component is an exam focused on computer systems covering the physical elements of computer science and the associated theory. Component 2 – Computational Thinking, Algorithms and Programming. This component is focused on the core theory of computer science and the application of computer science principles. Component 3 – Programming Project (non-exam assessment). This component is the non-exam assessment where candidates will be challenged by a range of exciting and engaging tasks to apply the

knowledge and skills they have learned

GCSE Dance

How will I be assessed? There are three elements:-

1. One hour and thirty minutes written paper – covering studies of the work of professional dance companies and of a set work. Also, knowledge and understanding of choreographic process and performance

skills. (80 marks) 40% 2. Performance in a duet or trio (25 marks). Performance of three set

phrases (15 marks). 30% 3. Choreography of either a solo or a group dance (40 marks). 60%

Why should I choose GCSE Dance?

GCSE Drama What Will You Study?

Drama encourages students to develop a personal interest in why drama

matters and be inspired, moved and changed by studying a broad,

coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study. As well as, working

imaginatively and creatively in collaborative contexts, generating,

developing and communicating ideas and reflecting on and evaluating their

own work and the work of others. The course will consider and explore the

impact of social, historical and cultural influences on drama texts and

activities.

GCSE Food What Will You Study?

This new GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition is an exciting and creative

course which focuses on practical cooking skills to ensure students develop

a thorough understanding of nutrition, food provenance and the working

characteristics of food materials. At its heart, this qualification focuses on

nurturing students' practical cookery skills to give them a strong

understanding of nutrition.

You will develop your ability to use the target language spontaneously for the purpose of spoken and written practical communication. You will use the foreign language in authentic situations and to understand both spoken and written sources (for example: radio announcements, signs, notices, newspaper articles, and letters from pen friends). The course is taught in topic areas and the four language skills, speaking, listening, reading and writing are assessed at regular intervals at Foundation and Higher levels.

There are 3 units. Unit 1 is called ‘The Physical Environment, it covers The

Changing Landscape of the UK, Weather Hazards and Climate Change and

Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Management. Unit 2 ‘The Human

Environment’ looks at Changing Cities, Global Development and Resource

Management. Unit 3 ‘Geographical Investigation: Fieldwork and UK

Challenges’ requires you to study a topic area that draws across knowledge

and understanding from The Physical Environment and The Human

Environment.

Why Geography?

Geography is an ever growing subject that gives you the opportunity to be

taught by enthusiastic and imaginative subject specialists. They will

support you in acquiring skills that will be very useful in later life and

careers. Geography graduates are one of the top 5 most employed

graduates in the UK.

The course provides tasks that engage learners and includes the most

taxing aspects of the National Curriculum, looking at the Values of Care and

the current legislation requirements and also the importance of softer skills

such as communication skills to ensure individual’s right to independence

You will study the structure of ICT systems: as used in the home, at school and in

BTEC Music has been developed in the Creative and Cultural Skills sector to

well as performing covers of music both individually and as a group. In

addition, you will work on a whole school music project ad learn how to

write your own music.

Students will be introduced to a variety of experiences exploring a range of

lens-based and light-based media, techniques and processes. They will

explore relevant images, artefacts and resources relating to lens-based and

light-based media from the past and from recent times, including European

and non–European examples which should be integral to the investigating

and making process. Responses to these examples must be shown through

practical and critical activities which demonstrate the candidates'

understanding of different styles, genres and traditions.

Psychology at an introductory level, it illustrates these methods and

This course gives you the opportunity to design and make products using a

wide range of materials. In preparation for GCSE you will study three

modules: Materials including wood, plastic and metal; Textiles incorporating

electronics; and Marketing. This series of mini-projects will develop your

practical skills and graphical presentation skills. You will then complete

your multi-material Controlled Assessment ‘design and make project’ and

prepare for the final examination.

Product Design is the process of creating new products and items from scratch or working on improvements to existing ones. Craft Construction (Vocational)


The NCFE Certificate in Creative studies: Craft is offered in a carousel

format covering Joinery, Electrical, Brickwork and Plumbing.

Why Choose Craft Construction?

The course offers flexibility and an engaging programme for those considering a role within Construction. Transferable skills are also developed for those considering alternative employment or progression within an education environment. The course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge, skills and understanding required for entry into Construction courses or

The course gives students an introduction to the knowledge and skills

needed to work in motor vehicle repair and related fields.

course. Learners will need to demonstrate both academic ability to work at

the required level and an interest and commitment to Motor Vehicle repair.

This course is 20% theory and 80% practical.
