FARMER’S GROCERY

The Farmer’s Grocery is a project for western Nebraska that gives local farmers a place to sell their prod-uct directly to consumers and also serves as a distribution center for struggling small town grocery stores. The project is inspired by local mar-kets of the past and contrasts the large scale super markets that we see today. The interior and exterior spaces fl ow together with the roof extending to the outdoor market to create space for selling goods in an outdoor farmer’s market.

TRAILS REVITALIZATION

Lincoln has an extensive trail net-work that cuts through the center of the city on the Antelope Valley trail. As a way to revitalize the area and increase use of the system this proj-ect focuses on three points along the trail, most importantly a hub that is centrally located along the trail (site 2). The projects create a space that acts as a starting point for a day on the trails. The project incorpo-rates a bike shop, bike storage and a community garden that acts as a classroom space for promoting a healthier lifestyle. The other nodes on the project create destinations on each end of the path.

UNL LABS

UNL Labs is a project on the pro-posed Innovation Campus that serves as classroom and research space. There was a focus on solar performance throughout the project both in terms of daylighting as well as building effi ciency. The central atrium provides light to the interior of the building while the exterior form maximizes exposure to northern light. Light studies were conducted using Ecotect to analyze both light quality as well as solar gain.

Ecotect was used to ana-lyze and adjust spaces accordingly throughout the design process. This analysis is looking at light-ing levels in the offi ce spaces with the primary light sources being north facing windows as well as light reaching the interior from the atrium space.

BEMIS GARDENS : FACT

I was involved with the creation of the Bemis Gardens project through FACT (fabrication and construction team) at UNL. The group of stu-dents collaborated with local de-signers and artists through a series of weekly design charrettes to cre-ate a garden space on the existing dock in front of the Bemis Center. This provided a unique opportunity to work with a larger group through the design process and also allowed the opportunity to participate in the construction of the project, as well as see the project through to com-pletion which is an incredibly re-warding experience.

SOLT HAITI HOUSING

Solt is an organization that provides care for the community in Hinche, Haiti. Currently the organization builds basic square structures from cinderblock. Using the existing ma-terials available the project’s aim is to maximize and increase the space and usability provided by the struc-tures while reducing the amount of material necessary for construction. The end result is a structure that is 150sf larger, collects its own water and uses twenty linear feet less of cinderblock then the existing design.

FREEDOM BY DESIGN

In 2009 I was the co-chair for AIAS Freedom by Design. Throughout the year we found a client with special needs, worked with them to solve a problem in their daily lives and de-signed a solution for them through charrettes with other students. A build team was organized and the project was completed by the team in the the spring of 2009.
