  • OPERATION: Basically, the B310BDC Contour Probe is an electromagnet producing astrong DC magnetic field. Place the Probe legs upon the ferrous metal surface at a rightangle to the suspected defect. Push the test switch and lightly dust or float inspection powderover the area being inspected. Defect indications will be revealed in a direction shown onfigure 2. Turn the Probe 90 degrees from the first test and repeat the procedure. The testswitch should be released only after the powder application. However, if excess powder is tobe lightly blown away, as is the procedure to reveal minute indications, the Probe shouldremain energized while this procedure is performed. It should be noted that a DC field maynot in all instances, produce the same sensitivity to detect minute surface defect indicationsthat might otherwise be obtained with an AC field. A test standard should always be used toverify sensitivity to detect the smallest rejectable application defect. The B310BDC will complywith the DC weight lift test of 30 to 50 pounds. Occasional checks of the weight lift test shouldbe performed during testing.

BATTERY CHARGING: The BP7 battery pack should provide sufficient battery life to operatethe B310BDC for approximately eight hours of use. The BP15 battery pack should provide fornearly double this use. Recharge either battery overnight only. Do not allow batteries toremain on charge for longer periods.

The exclusive, reversible strain relief feature permits the B310BDC to be used in very confined areas. The strain relief may be rotated to exit the top of the unit (figure 3) or conven-tionally, from the rear (figure 4). With the B310BDC disconnected from the battery, removethe four phillips-head screws holding the strain relief plate. Rotate the plate assembly aroundbeing careful not to twist the wires more than once. Replace the plate assembly and fourscrews.

    Operating Environment: Temperature: 32 to 104F (0 to 40C). Relative humidity: 10% to95%, non-condensing.

Shipping and Storage Environment: Temperature: -40 to 140F (-40 to 60C). Relativehumidity: 5% to 95%. Vibration and shock: As encountered in normal shipping and handlingwith no degradation.

The instrument should be wiped clean with a general purpose cleaner after each use.
