Picnic with Penguins By Ryan Broley, D.A.D.S Group President

Don’t forget the first “Picnic with Penguins” is coming up on Friday, September 22. Formerly known as “Lunch with D.A.D.S.” we felt that a rename was in order to make sure everyone knew they were included and not just D.A.D.S.

For those of you who haven’t been to one, these “Picnic with Penguins”, sponsored by D.A.D.S (more on the D.A.D.S Group below), are an opportunity for all parents, grandparents, etc, to come enjoy lunch with their students on campus. Some parents bring lunch from nearby restaurants, and some bring in lunch made at home. If you're running late you can always get a school lunch for $4! In some cases, parents may just hang out with their child while the child eats a lunch from the cafeteria. It's really just a great opportunity to take a break from our day, spend quality time with our children, and meet other parents. These events are always contingent upon favorable weather (they're subject to rainout, for example).

Here is the schedule of lunch periods by grade that is effective for this Friday’s Picnic with Penguins: 11:15 - 11:45 am Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten 12:00 - 12:40 pm 4th & 5th grade 12:20 - 1:00 pm 2nd & 3rd grade 12:40 - 1:20 pm 1st grade Now for the housekeeping part. 1. Because of the large numbers of parents visiting campus, parents are asked to sign in at the front gate, rather than funnel through the office. Signing out is not required.

2. Please observe all traffic and parking regulations on and adjacent to campus.

3. Please do not take food onto the playground areas and please dispose of all trash properly. For those unfamiliar with the D.A.D.S. Group, the acronym stands for Dedicated And Determined Support. We are a group of (mostly, but not exclusively) fathers who want to make a positive impact on our children's school and school experience. In addition to organizing, Picnic with Penguins, the D.A.D.S. Group sponsors or supports several school events throughout the year, such as Family Movie Night, Bicycle Maintenance and Safety Workshop (with a canyon ride to the waterfall led by our principal), Penguin Rock, D.A.D.S. Olympics, and the Pancake Breakfast and Car Show. Additionally the D.A.D.S have engaged in many campus maintenance and improvement projects over the years.

Volunteers Needed for Penguin PALS By Gina McMillan, Impact Teacher

Parents of Second through Fifth Graders: We will be doing our Penguin PAL program again this year to help students with fluency and comprehension. Penguin PAL volunteers come in once a week to work with a small number of students (usually two or three) in a group setting right outside of the classroom.

You are trained on how to run a 30-minute session using a program called Quick Reads. The students practice their fluency on these non-fiction passages. You also help them improve their comprehension skills on what they have read. The program has been very successful and students leave the program feeling much more confident about their read-ing.

We will need 1 to 2 volunteers per classroom. (for 2nd

to 5th grades) Depending on the classroom, you may work with a

teacher, other than your child’s teacher.

If you are interested in volunteering, and have not participated before, you will need to attend one training session which takes place in room K114 with me, Gina McMillan. There will be two sessions offered: Tuesday, September 26 at 9:15 am or Wednesday, September 27 at 9:15 am. If you have participated before, you are always welcome to attend the training session for a refresher. Please contact me at [email protected], if you are interested in participating or if you have a questions.

Science Night Volunteers Needed! By Shannon Nellies, PV Science Coordinator

Park Village Science Nights cannot happen without the help of wonderful parents and volunteers like you! Each grade level has their own Science Night and students must be accompanied by an adult. Therefore, it’s best you volunteer on a night where your child is not attending.

Science Night Volunteers arrive around 6:25pm and we are usually finished by 8:30pm. You do not need any science background to help out. Your job would be to make sure the station has all the supplies they need and assist the stu-dents and parents if they have questions.

2017– 2018 Science Nights 4th grade - Thursday, October 12 3rd grade - Thursday, November 2 2nd grade - Thursday, January 18 1st grade - Thursday, February 15 TK / Kindergarten - Thursday, March 8

If you would like to volunteer, please click on the link and sign up. Don’t forget to include your email. 2017-2018 Science Nights

Please contact Shannon Nellies with any questions at [email protected] or [email protected]. Thank you! We look forward to seeing you at science night!

Celebrate with a Birthday Book Club Donation to the Library

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Why not honor your child's birthday with a lasting gift? The school library’s Birthday Book Club

is an opportunity to celebrate your child’s birthday (or another milestone occasion) and make a

contribution that will benefit students for years to come. Summer birthdays (June – August) can

enjoy their Birthday Club book on their half-birthday.

This program is completely optional, but if you wish to participate, please complete the form below and

return it to Mrs. Fleming, PVES librarian. We would love to celebrate with you!

How the Birthday Club works:

1. You select a book from the Park Village ES Library Wish List on Amazon.com

(http://a.co/2ZY3HZB). There are a wide variety of pre-selected books to choose from. Shop

through the Foundation’s Amazon Smile link so your gift benefits the school in two ways! You

can ship the book to the library, or you can receive it at home and bring it to the library yourself.

2. Complete the Birthday Club form so the library knows what to expect. This form is also on the

school library’s website.

3. A bookplate bearing the student's name, current age, and date of the birthday will be placed in the

book.

4. When the book is ready, your child will be the first one to check it out.

5. After the book is returned, it becomes part of the library collection but will be displayed on a

special Birthday Club shelf for 30 days so students can easily find the newest donations.

Dear Park Village Parents, Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. We hope you all had a fun and exciting summer. Park Village Elementary School (PVES) has always been a great supporter of the Junior FLL program. We would like to welcome students from 1st through 3rd grade to join this program. What is Jr.FLL? Junior FIRST(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League encourages young children’s inherent curiosity to discover the wonders in the world of science and technology. This program nurtures the curiosity of young minds by providing them with a real world problem. Under the guidance of parent coaches and mentors, children work together in a small group to come up with a solution for this problem through their research and imagination. The children will use lego bricks to build a model with at least one motorized part and a “Show Me” poster to illustrate their research journey. For more information visit http://www.firstlegoleaguejr.org/about-jrfll Who can participate? PVES students from grades 1-3 can participate in the Jr.FLL program. How long does the season last? The team will meet once a week for 1-2 hours for 12 weeks. The time and date of the meetings can be chosen based on the availability of the coaches and the team members. Students will be presenting their work at an EXPO in the local area (usually at Westview High School) in the month of January/February (dates have not been announced yet). There is an optional EXPO at Legoland if the team chooses to attend. What is the challenge for this year? The challenge for this year is Aqua Adventure. Click here to learn more. How to participate? Jr.FLL is all about the children. The children will be doing the work while having lots of fun all under the supervision of their parent coach(es). We request that your child does not miss more than 2 sessions during the season.

How can parents join in this journey with their child? Jr.FLL is a volunteer run program. We request parents to volunteer as head or assistant coaches. The head coaches will be provided with the material, guidance and support from the previous coaches and mentors. Each head coach will train 4-6 students depending upon the availability of the total number of head coaches and students that have applied to Jr. FLL. If there are not enough coaches, we may not be able to take all the students who have applied. Hence, we would like to encourage parents to volunteer as head/assistant coaches. What is the cost? The cost per participant will be around $75-$100 per child to cover registration, field trip, T-shirt, materials and expo registration fees. How to apply? Please fill out the application here. The last date to submit the application is Friday, September, 29th 2017. Please email Vandana Parasaram/Jenny Senior at [email protected] with any questions.
