PLANT STOCK QUALITY CONTROL NOTES
1. Specimens are vigorous, well established, not soft or forced (i.e should be grown in
full sun)
2. Specimens have ability to be clear trunked (this is species dependant) for 25L stock
0.5m clear runk can be expected. 45L stock 1.0m is acceptable
3. Specimens are of a good maturity in relation to the specified container size, i.e.
canopy is not so heavy in relation to the container size that the pot can not remain
upright
4. All specimens must pass the 'Bernley Test' i.e. if the tree trunk can be moved within
the rootball the tree is to be rejected. Selected specimens are to remain firm with the
pot, when moved by rocking the trunk, thus causing the whole pot to move firmly with
the tree
5. Specimens have good root development with roots extending to bottom and outside
of pot without matting or encircling at the bottom or side of pot. No roots to be
sticking above the potting mix. No kinking, 'j roots' or circling at pot surface
6. Specimens are self supporting when left unstaked
7. Specimens are not to be tip-pruned
MAINTENANCE NOTES
1. Stake removal as necessary due to particular growth habits remove stakes at end of
specified maintenance period.
2. Fertilizer applications for every season or at least 3 seasons (omit winter) particularly
spring and remedial or formature pruning before off maintenance.
