AAA Word From the Pastor
Last weekend, our parish celebrated our 55th anniversary. Bishop Robert Brennan, the Vic-ar General of the Diocese and Moderator of the Curia, was the celebrant of the Mass. Fa-ther Steven from the KCA, Father Rafferty and I concelebrated the Mass. Unfortunately Msgr. Beckman, who preceded Father Rafferty as pastor, was unable to attend because of a school function in his parish school. A wonderful celebration with approximately 155 HNJ and KCA parishioners and friends fol-lowed in the parish hall. Member from the FUNdraising committee transformed the parish hall into a banquet hall with decorations, pictures telling the story of HNJ, tables with linen table cloths and napkins, foods from a variety of nations, a variety of beverages including red and white wines hosted by Banfi, beer and soda and music by the M&M Twins. During the course of the evening, there was a Chinese auction and a live auction. All of this along plus the company and support from parishioners and friends made for a very enjoyable evening. Please join me in thanking the FUNdraising Committee for a job well done. They worked long and hard over the months and the past few days preceding the event to make sure we would have a great time. Sunday, November 5, 2017, is the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP). It is a day where Christians all over the world make a special effort to pray for be-lievers who are suffering for their faith. Did you know that over 70% of the world’s population lives in countries with heavy restrictions on religion? Did you know that more than one hun-dred million Christians worldwide are currently suffering interrogations, arrest, and even death for their faith in Jesus Christ? All of this happens on a daily basis around the world while Christians in the West enjoy relative peace, security, and freedom. First Corinthians Chapter 12 compares the church, the body of Christ, to a physical body with each member having a different function. Verse 26 says that if one member suffers, then all the members suffer with it. As Christians, we are called to have an attitude of concern and love for one another as brothers and sisters in Christ. We need to care and give hope to those under du-ress through our prayers especially the Rosary. Can you set aside some time to join with people in over 130 countries praying for our fellow Christians on Nov. 5
th?
Next Sunday, there is the annual Collection of the Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) which includes the missions in the United States. The CCHD was founded forty years ago by the Bishop of the United States to fund community groups that seek justice and create lasting change. Saturday, November 11 is Veteran's Day. This holiday is dedicated to honoring anyone who has served in the US Military. The holiday was originally called Armistice Day to remember the end of World War I. In 1954, the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day. On this holiday, we remember, pray for, and thank all those who have served for the sacrifices they made for us.

FOCUS: Sometimes we forget who we are and whose we are. For the times we fail to put God before all else and put money, power, prestige, or relationships on the throne instead, we ask forgiveness through the mercy of God. In the first reading, a prophet challenges the spiritual leaders of his day. They have a responsibility to display ideal service to God. In the second reading, Paul is thankful for the way the community of faith puts the Gospel into action. In the Gospel, Jesus strongly criticizes the leaders of the Pharisees for not practicing what they preach. Published by Franciscan Media
