Scripture Reflec"on
As I reflected on the Reading selec"ons for today, Exodus 32: 7-11,13-
14, Timothy 1: 12-17, Luke 15: 1-32 and for good measure, Psalm 51,
there are so many good stories that made me think about my rela-
"onship with God, but there was one main theme that jumped out at
me.
In Exodus, The Lord was very angry with his people, Israel, because of
their idolatry, worshiping a golden calf. Moses intervened poin"ng
out all of the Lord’s promises. So, the Lord relented in the punish-
ment he had threatened.
Psalm 51, one of my favorites, asks God outright, “Have mercy on me,
O God.”
Paul was saying to Timothy in his le$er that Jesus considered Paul
trustworthy even though he had once been an arrogant blasphemer
and persecutor. Paul considered himself the worst of sinners. But,
Jesus came into the world to save sinners and for that reason Paul
was mercifully treated.
Then, Jesus relates several parables in the
Gospel with which we are very familiar.
The first tells us of a single sheep being lost
and the shepherd leaves the flock to search
for and find the lost one. There is a great
celebra"on of joy because, it was lost and
now is found. The next parable explains
how a woman lost one of ten coins. She
searches diligently and when she finds it, she calls her neighbors to
celebrate with her when she tells them, “I found the coin I lost”. In
the last story, Jesus describes a father who had two sons. The young-
er asks his father for his inheritance and when his father grants his
request, the son leaves home and goes to a far country. He spent his
money on extravagant and loose living un"l he is poor. He is sent to
feed swine but is not allowed even to share their food. He decides to
return to his father to beg his forgiveness. But, the father has been
looking for him since he le'. He sees him coming at a distance, runs
to meet him, greets him with a kiss, puts a ring on his finger, dresses
him in fine clothes and celebrated with a feast, saying, “ This son of
mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been
found. I believe these readings are poin"ng to one of God’s most
loving a$ributes of over-abundant, extravagant, everlas"ng MERCY.

Look! In CD format, Le%er to the Elderly from Pope John Paul
II by Lighthouse Talks, Augus"ne Ins"tute.
In 1978, Pope John Paul II became one of the youngest popes
ever elected. At the "me of his death in 2005, he was also one
of the longest serving popes, having lived into his early
80s. From his own experience of growing old, and only five and
a half years before his death, John Paul wrote and shared this
moving le$er, addressed “To my elderly brothers and sis-
ters.” His le$er shares and cherishes the experiences, beauty,
agony, and dignity of growing old and drawing closer to
God. Enjoy the CD.

MISSION - St. Mother Teresa continued
Life was very challenging for Mother Teresa a'er she le' the
convent to serve the poorest of the poor. She had a comforta-
ble life in the convent and she loved teaching, praying and liv-
ing community life with other sisters. Now her heart was
drawn to care for the sick and the dying, so she went for a
short medical course with the Medical Mission Sisters in Patna,
in the state of Bihar. A'er the medical course, she returned to
Calcu$a and found temporary lodging with the Li$le Sisters of
the Poor. On 21 December she went for the first "me to the
slums. She visited families, washed the sores of some children,
cared for an old man lying sick on the road and nursed a wom-
an dying of hunger and TB. This would become her everyday
ministry. She started each day in communion with Jesus in the
Eucharist and then went out, rosary in her hand, to find and
serve Him in “the unwanted, the unloved, the uncared
for.” A'er some months, she was joined, one by one, by her
former students.
On 7 October 1950 the new congrega"on of
the Missionaries of Charity was officially es-
tablished in the Archdiocese of Calcu$a. By
the early 1960s, Mother Teresa began to
send her Sisters to other parts of India. Then
the Missionaries of Charity opened a house in
Venezuela in 1965. It was soon followed by
founda"ons in Rome and Tanzania and, eventually, on every
con"nent. Star"ng in 1980 and con"nuing through the 1990s,
Mother Teresa opened houses in almost all of the communist
countries, including the former Soviet Union, Albania and Cu-
ba.
In order to respond be$er to both the physical and spiritual
needs of the poor, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of
Charity Brothers in 1963, and in 1984 the Missionaries of Chari-
ty Fathers. Yet her inspira"on was not limited to those with
religious voca"ons. She formed the Co-Workers of Mother Te-
resa and the Sick and Suffering Co-Workers, people of many
faiths and na"onali"es with whom she shared her spirit of
prayer, simplicity, sacrifice and her apostolate of humble works
of love. This spirit later inspired the Lay Missionaries of Charity.
During the years of rapid growth, the world began to turn its
eyes towards Mother Teresa and the work she had started. She
received numerous awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in
1979. She received both prizes and a$en"on “for the glory of
God and in the name of the poor.”
To be con"nued…
