Vol. 37, No. 28 15th Sunday In Ordinary Time July 10, 2016
Saint Peter’s Parochial School
Late in June, principals from parochial schoolsaround the Archdiocese of Washington attended a DataSummit, at which the results of standardized testingwere reported and analyzed. The hard work of our ownfaculty, staff, and students was evident when wereceived our results:
• Our Faith and Knowledge religion scores improvedfrom last year, and we were above proficiency in allfive areas of assessment—once again!
• Our Scantron scores were higher than both theNational and Archdiocesan scores in both readingand math in all grade levels which were tested (thatis, grades 2–8)—once again!
• All our grade levels tested exceeded the cut-offscores for qualifying for national Blue Ribbon statusin both reading and math—once again!
These achievements are due to a commitment toacademic excellence and a passion for Catholiceducation.
We are grateful to all our parish families—whetherthey have youngsters enrolled in our school or not—fortheir continuing support of our educational ministry.
Is It Too Early to Think about College?
This past year, every eighth-grader from SaintPeter’s Parochial School who applied to one of ourlocal Catholic high schools was admitted to the schoolof his/her choice.
Many of those young men and women receivedscholarships based on academics as well as on artsand music.
At those high schools, the admissions rate forcollege averages over 95%, so it appears that the roadto a good college begins here at Saint Peter’s School.

From Our Pastor
Dear Family,
As you probably know, I have to write thesereflections more than a week before you actually readthem. God willing, as you read these words I am inPhiladelphia with our dedicated teens and their adult advisors, preparing to offer Vacation Bible School tochildren at Saint Veronica’s Parish.
This is the third year in which we have gone on thismission trip, and this is the third year in which I havehad the privilege to accompany them—at least for thefirst few days before I have to get back to Olney.
These young men and women sacrifice a greatdeal. They sleep on the floor of a building which goesunused most of the year. The plumbing is not so goodeither, but it is good enough. Breakfast is achy, afterspending the night on a hard floor. Lunch is usually “on the run” because the teens are busy supervisingfive-to-ten-year old children who may be eating theironly real meal of the day.
Why do our teens do this? There are as many different answers to that
question as there are individual teens. However, by the end of the week they would all
probably agree that they have seen the face of Jesusin the children whom they have served.
By the end of the week, those children have cometo see the face of Jesus in our teens.
• I thank God for these dedicated young people andfor the grown-ups who take time to accompanythem in their journey with Jesus.
• I also thank God for the dozen-or-so high schooland college students who served as counselors atEdge Camp for middle-schoolers last month, andfor the two-dozen-or-so high school and middle-schoolers who served on the staff of our VacationBible School for younger children last week.
• I thank our Youth Minister, Angela Busby, and ourDRE, Cindy Dixon, as well as their respective staffsfor all the hard work they invest in ministry with ouryoung people.
• I thank you for your extraordinary support.
God bless you.Father Tom Kalita

Archdiocesan Prayer for the Year of Mercy
Almighty God and Father,You have created all thingsand know the desire of every heart.
In this Year of Mercy, we reflect on your great love for us,and acknowledge our sinfulnessand need for your healing mercy.
Trusting that you never tire of forgiving us, we open our hearts to receive your forgiveness and love.
Having encountered you, Mercy itself, and guided by the Holy Spirit,
June we witness to the love we have receivedby sharing it with those most in need: the hungry, the homeless, the afflicted, and the oppressed.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Why I Love the Prayer Group
Peace and love are palpable as we sing to God in theChapel near the substantial presence of Jesus in the HolyEucharist. Anyone can propose a song. As Prayer Groupmember Bob Hails says, “the only requirement is that at leastone person knows the song.”
We also share spiritual experiences including ourpetitions for God’s help, prayer for each other, and for eachof our special intentions. On Wednesday evenings from 8–9p.m., we leave the world behind us and remember why weare alive and where is our true home. Join us!
