Dear Friends,
This week I have just a few observations to
share with you as we enter into another week of
coping with social distancing and isolation.
One of the more pleasant things I did this
past week was to offering a prayer and blessing
at Leominster Hospital. Chaplain Rene Andersen
set us up on Facebook as we stood outside on the
front lawn of the hospital. I offered the prayer
and then turned to bless the hospital and all the
workers and patients. It was a moving experience
as I explained to them that my mother worked as
a nurse’s aid at The Memorial Hospital in
Worcester for over twenty years on the 11-7
shift. Many were the days that she came home
exhausted and wanting to sleep but not before we
were all sent off to school. While I may not have
appreciated it then, I certainly recall the sacrifices
she (and my father) made to give us a good
home. As I reflect on all the sacrifices our hospital
workers make each day in this crisis, my heart
and prayers increase each day with love for all
they do.
I am the local priest that the others will call
if someone needs the Sacrament of the Sick. This
is a privilege for me. While only one call was
related to Covid 19, the others were among the
poorest of God’s poor. Without fail, each time
their gratitude was overwhelming and
humbling.
There have been funerals in the church and
in the funeral parlor. It goes against our very
nature as human beings not to be able to hug one
another in our grief. Can you imagine not being
able to attend a loved one’s funeral or to be with
them as they are leaving this world? It is
heartbreaking beyond words and yet it is also
impossible not to see the deep love we all have for
one another.
Remember, in today’s gospel, the disciples
recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread. In
these few stories I just shared with you, we could
all recognize Jesus in the sharing of the “bread” of
the situation. We could see him in the deep love
that only comes from him. He sacrificed his life for
us so we could “have life and have it to the
full.” My prayer is for a continuation of that kind
of recognition to lead us out of this pandemic and
into the full light and life of Christ.
Peace, Fr. Michael
