Yes there is panic buying. Yes there is sickness. Yes there is even death. But, They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise You can hear the birds again. They say that after just a few weeks of quiet The sky is no longer thick with fumes But blue and grey and clear. They say that in the streets of Assisi People are singing to each other across the empty squares, keeping their windows open so that those who are alone may hear the sounds of family around them. They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound. Today a young woman I know is busy spreading fliers with her number through the neighborhood so that the elders may have someone to call on. Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples are preparing to welcome and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary. All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting. All over the world people are looking at their neighbors in a new way. All over the world people are waking up to a new reality To how big we really are. To how little control we really have. To what really matters. To Love. So we pray and we remember that Yes there is fear. But there does not have to be hate. Yes there is isolation. But there does not have to be loneliness. Yes there is panic buying. But there does not have to be meanness. Yes there is sickness. But there does not have to be disease of the soul Yes there is even death. But there can always be a rebirth of love. Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now. Today, breathe. Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic- The birds are singing again The sky is clearing, Spring is coming, And we are always encompassed by Love. Open the windows of your soul And though you may not be able to touch across the empty square, Sing.

Need to Know and Contact Information on pages 10 and 11

Pope Francis’ prayer to Mary during the coronavirus pandemic:

    O Mary,

you always shine on our path

as a sign of salvation and of hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick,

who at the cross took part in Jesus' pain,

    keeping your faith firm.

    You know what we need,

and we are sure you will provide

so that, as in Cana of Galilee,

we may return to joy and to feasting

    after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love,

to conform to the will of the Father

and to do as we are told by Jesus,

who has taken upon himself our sufferings

    and carried our sorrows

to lead us, through the cross,

to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

Scripture Preview for Next Week the Fifth Sunday of Lent by Deacon Max Schellman First Reading—Ezechial 37:12-14: The prophet Ezechial gives hope to the people of Israel who are in exile in Babylon. He tells them the Lord will bring them back to Israel. This reminds them of God’s promise to bring Israel back to life. Because of the metaphorical use of graves in the description, this passage is thought by some to be a basis for our view of the resurrection of the dead. Second Reading—Romans 8:8-11: Paul separates the things of this world (the flesh) from those of God (the spirit). He presents his picture of baptism as dying into life. He tells us that those who believe are not of the flesh but have the Spirit within and are united with God and will rise. Paul tells us that God has power over death. Gospel— John 11:1-45: In this passage, we are reminded of God’s power over death, His love for us and His promise of our resurrection. Jesus is asked to come to Bethany in Judah because His friend Lazarus is very ill. He delays and Lazarus dies. Jesus’ delay was intentional so that He might increase the faith of His disciples in Him and glorify God. When He arrives, Martha and Mary, sisters of Lazarus, are grieving and remark that had Jesus arrived earlier Lazarus may not have died. Jesus tells them that Lazarus is sleeping and goes to him. He tells them that He is “the resurrection and the life” and those who believe in Him will never die. Jesus then raises Lazarus from the dead. As many of us “hunker down and self-quarantine” we can feel exiled like the Israelites in Babylon in the first reading. We confidently pray to the Lord for deliverance and his healing help for those affected by COVID-19.

Scripture for This Week the Fourth Sunday of Lent by Deacon Max Schellman First Reading—1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a: The priest Samuel is charged by God to anoint a new king of Israel. He is to find the new king among the sons of Jesse of Bethlehem. Jesse presents seven sons, but none of them are God’s chosen one. God asks if there are other sons and is told there is one more, the youngest. When the youngest is brought forth, God declares, “...this is the one!” Samuel then anoints David with the horn of oil in hand as the new king of Israel. Second Reading—Ephesians 5:8-14: St. Paul uses the image of moving from darkness to light to show his people they are called to live as the Lord wishes and not in the world’s darkness. In closing, he proclaims, “…Christ will give you light.” Gospel—John 9:1-41: Jesus, while passing by a blind man, stops. He makes clay by spatting on the ground and smears the clay on the man’s eyes. He tells the man to go to the Pool of Siloam and to wash his eyes. When the man does so, he imme-diately can see. The Pharisees become involved in discussions of this and create a controversy over whether the man was actually blind and how his sight could have been gained. They have declared the man a sinner thinking that is why he was blind. Jesus then uses blindness and sight to explain that those who do not see Him as the “Son of Man” are indeed blind.

Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land Submitted by Deacon Max Schellman

We often hear of the persecution and maltreatment of Christians in the Middle East. Most of us feel powerless to do any-thing because we live so far away. All of us can help our fellow Christians in the Holy Land. We can personally make a difference through our prayers, fasting and almsgiving in the lives of our brothers and sisters. On Good Friday, the Church will again take up its annual worldwide collection for the Holy Land—its people and its shrines. The shrines are the Holy Sites, including the Tomb of Christ. Monetary support from each of us is desperately needed by those struggling to maintain our Faith and our physical presence there. We can help to insure current and future genera-tions of Christians in the Holy Land can live and thrive there. Funds collected help to maintain the Holy Sites and support schools, parishes and housing needs for Christian families. This year, we are asked again to be extra generous. If you gave nothing in the past, please consider making some type of gift. If you gave last year, please consider increasing the amount, if you can. If you won’t be at a Good Friday service, consider putting your gift in an envelope marked GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION and mailing it to the parish office. Envelopes are included in the monthly contribution packet for those who receive them. Christianity is rapidly disappearing from the Holy Land. For our brothers and sisters there, it is a daily struggle for survival. Please pray for peace in the Holy Land and we ask all to join in their suffering by making a sacrificial gift on Good Friday. Good Shepherd parishioners have been very generous in supporting this collection in the past and we ask for your continued support by your contributions to the Good Friday Collection.

Eucharistic Exposition Eucharistic Exposition will not be held through April 12, 2020. Parishioners are welcome to visit the chapel for private prayer during office hours. Please enter at door #6.

Pastoral Care and Outreach Deacon Dennis Berry—489-8815 ext. 708 or e-mail [email protected]

Deacon Mark Westendorf—489-8815 ext. 714 or e-mail [email protected] Jack Peltz—489-8815 ext. 709 or e-mail [email protected]

At times people who may be hungry visit Good Shepherd asking for help and are given a “food bag.” We have a supply of nonperishable, long lasting food in paper bags which at times are also given out through St. Vincent de Paul. The following food items cost about $35 at the grocery store and will fit in one paper grocery bag (we ask that the bag be doubled). All nonperishables: Box of dry milk 3 cans of beef stew, meat or chicken Jar of peanut butter Jar of jelly 2 cans of soup 3 cans of vegetables 3 cans of fruit Box of corn flakes Bar of Ivory soap Box of mac and cheese Parishioners can contribute to this effort by shopping for the items above and “filling a bag.” This could be a fun and meaningful family activity. “Food bags” can be dropped off in the parish office at any time to the attention of Jack Peltz. Information about the NEEDS food pantry, Good Shepherd and St. Vincent de Paul are included in an envelope in the bag along with $3 for bread/perishables. We date the bags and store for people in need. We will not let any food go to waste—bags not used for some period of time will be given to St. Francis Seraph Ministries as part of “Shepherds Share.” If you have any questions, contact Jack Peltz at 489-8815 ext. 709 or e-mail [email protected].

Fill A Bag for the Hungry How Can We Help? With children home from school due to COVID-19, there are a number of ways Good Shepherd can respond when a family requires assistance with food. Please take note of the following: Good Shepherd’s St. Vincent de Paul volunteers

respond to specific requests. Families can call Good Shepherd and be connected to St. Vincent de Paul vol-unteers. Your continued support of SVDP will enable them to respond generously to families in need.

“Food Bags” are available in the parish office consisting of a supply of nonperishable food that can help feed families in need for two-to-three days. Parishioners are encouraged to purchase items for the “Food Bags” and drop them off in the parish office. Information about the contents of the “Food Bag” can be found to the right.

Nonperishable food and personal care items can be dropped off in the blue bins by all entrances at any time. The vast majority of items support St. Francis Seraph Ministries in Over-the-Rhine, but items can also be used to support local families.

Your continued financial donations to Good Shepherd outreach enable the parish to respond to specific needs. Recent examples are donations to the St. Leo Food Pantry and the local “Northeast Emergency Distribution Service” (NEEDS).

NEEDS—“Northeast Emergency Distribution Service,” is a local food bank supported by Good Shepherd located at 8341 Kenwood Road. NEEDS can be contacted at CincyNEEDS.org or 891-0850.

Operation Give Back provides food for families within this area who have a need for assistance. Operation Give Back is located in Blue Ash at 10891 Millington Court and can be reached by calling 489-2023.

You also may contact Deacon Mark Westendorf if you know of a local family in need. Call 489-8815 ext. 714 or e-mail [email protected].

March Outreach Activity Center Drives Postponed

The Sanctity of Life “Baby Bottles for Life” Drive, Whitley City Needs Drive, and the GS-SOS Card Drive scheduled for March have been postponed until a later date. Once the Drives are re-scheduled, the dates will be communicat-ed. Thanks for your understanding.

Thank You for Your Outreach Donations

Good Shepherd’s outreach funds are very carefully given to deserving charities with the approval of our pastor and the Pastoral Care and Outreach Commission. Requests can be made to Deacon Mark Westendorf at [email protected]. Recently, $2,323.53 was donated in support of the food panty at St. Leo the Great Church in Cincinnati. St. Leo’s parish is in the poorest community in Hamilton County and has been declared a “Food Desert” by the FDA, as no grocery stores exist in the area. Contact Deacon Mark for additional information. Your support is greatly appreciated!

On February 22, Good Shepherd Supports Our Service Members (GS-SOS) received a request from a parishioner’s son who works with a veteran who has a friend stationed in South Korea. He wrote that the soldier told him that they were out of hand sanitizer and Lysol wipes and also needed energy drinks and snacks. He also told him that someone who knew he was infected with the corona virus still went to the post chapel. GS-SOS reacted immediately and sent Lysol wipes, hand sanitizer, snacks and energy drink powder mixes. (We were fortunate that we received the request when we did and all of our local stores were still well stocked!) Below is the response we received after the unit received all of the goods. It’s a “feel good moment” when you read the response for our ministry and for all of our parishioners who support our ministry. Many thanks! “Hats off and many thanks to Good Shepherd...the unit in South Korea received the packages...it took up half of the mail-room and filled a Humvee! They had enough stuff for their unit, a sister unit, and sent packages to a local home for the elderly that they had adopted.”

A member of our Welcoming Ministry will be honored to assist you.

Baptism Infant Baptisms are celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. Please register for Baptism by calling Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761 or e-mail: [email protected]). Before the Baptism, parents need to attend a session to explore the meaning of Baptism. Sessions are held on the first Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

Adult Initiation Into the Church Adults and children (7 years of age or older) who wish to become Catholics are invited to call Emily Weierman, (513-489-8815 ext. 726 or e-mail [email protected]).

First Eucharist (First Communion) First Eucharist (First Communion) is celebrated on two occasions in early spring. Parents are invited to call Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761). Children are invited to the Sacrament when they are in the second grade or have reached the age of 7. Children receiving First Eucharist (First Communion) need to be prepared to receive First Reconciliation (Confession). Preparation for First Reconciliation (Confession) begins early fall each year.

Confirmation for Youth Confirmation is celebrated in the spring each year for youth who have not yet received the Sacrament. Confirmation Prepa-ration takes place within the 8th grade Faith Formation curriculum. Classes run September through April for next year’s candidates. Please contact Walter Plummer with any questions (513-489-8815 or e-mail: [email protected]).

Marriage Marriages are celebrated throughout the year with exceptions made for Christmas holidays and the season of Lent. Please contact Steve Lindner for information (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]). Preparation for marriage begins eight months before the Sacrament is celebrated. For preparations, call Steve Lindner (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]).

Pastoral Care of the Sick Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick can be offered when someone is seriously ill, requires surgery, or if the same illness or condition becomes more serious. Each week on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m., the anointing is offered within Mass (in the chapel). Please notify Deacon Dennis Berry (513-489-8815, ext. 708, or e-mail: [email protected]) in advance of your need. Our parish priests also come to the sick person at home, in the hospital, or at Hospice.

Ministry to the Dying: Anointing and/or Viaticum If a person is near death, he or she may be anointed. However, if the dying person is able to swallow, it is recommended that they receive the Eucharist as Viaticum. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick ought to be celebrated at the beginning of an illness. Viaticum is to be celebrated when death is close. The Eucharist, given as Viaticum, is food for the passage through death to eternal life. A priest or a deacon may give Viaticum to the dying person. When a priest is unavailable, it is important that the deacon visit the dying to pray with that person and the family and offer Viaticum. Please call the parish office (513-489-8815). After hours, please leave a message about the location of the dying person and your contact phone number. That message will be relayed to a priest or deacon.

Reconciliation (Confessions) Tuesdays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room in the church. Those attending the Sacrament can enter through the doors to the church, prepare in the church and enter the Reconciliation Room when they see the priest is not occupied with another penitent.

Vocations Single men or women interested in answering the call to Priesthood or Religious Life are encouraged to contact the pastor or the Diocesan Vocations Director at 513-421-3131.
