Dear Parishioners, You will by now have heard that some Churches are opening for Masses. However only 10 people (including the Priest) are allowed to participate. There are strict protocols of registering the details of each person and cleaning the church after each person leaves. We have decided here at Sunnybank not to open the Church for our Masses until the weekend of 13th/14th June when we can have 20 people attend. After the weekend of 13th/14th June, we will also celebrate weekday Masses where only 20 people (including the Priest) will be able to attend. We will celebrate some evening Masses during the week. However only 120 people will be able to attend the six Masses on the weekend and 160 people at the proposed eight Masses during the weekdays. We normally have about 2000 people at our weekend Masses, so we will be announcing some sort of registration or ballot system where people can register to attend a weekend or weekday Mass, hopefully at least once a month until higher numbers are allowed to attend our Masses. From 11th/12th July we should be able to have 100 people attending each Mass. When we begin the Masses on the weekend of 13th/14th June we will need some volunteers to assist us to be able to organise a Mass. At each Mass we will need a Marshall(who needs to be under the age of 70) who will need to record each persons name, address and phone number. At each Mass we will need two cleaners to be able to sanitise each seat that is used and to sanitise any touch points”. If you can assist please call the Parish Office during normal office hours and nominate which Mass you can assist with. In organising the Parish Masses, obviously we are following very strict guidelines laid down by the government . Also we are very conscious of protecting the elderly and the vulnerable in our community. I fear that it may be some months or longer before we can return to normal Mass attendances. We continue to live streamon our Parish Facebook and our website (olol.com.au) at 9.30am Mass every Sunday until 13th/14th June when we may live streamanother Mass Time. Of course you can watch and pray this Parish Mass any time after it is recorded. Last weekend after Sunday Mass we had 450 people view the Mass and since Sunday the number has risen to over 540. Anyone wanting to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is vey welcome to ring the Parish office during normal office hours to organise a time to celebrate the Sacrament with one of our Priests. As always our wonderful St Vincent DePaul people are willing to help anyone in need. If you or anyone you know is in need please contact the Parish office during normal office hours and we will arrange for someone to assist. The Ascension of the Lord: Year A

First Reading: Acts 1: 1-11 In this reading, Luke shows how he young, Spirit -filled community of the early Church of Jerusalem is the fulfilment of the promises made to Israel.

Second Reading: Ephesians 1: 17-23 This reading, from the first chapter of the Letter to the Ephesians, is a prayer of thanksgiving for the gifts given to us by God: that we might take for ourselves and use these gifts which have been given to us.

Gospel: Matthew 28: 16-20 Matthew ’s account of the ascension of Jesus characteristically takes place on a mountain - the high place where Matthew’s Jesus is depicted as the new Moses. And while formerly, the mission was to the lost sheep of the House of Israel, now the great commission is to make disciples of all the nations, placing on the lips of Jesus the Trinitarian, liturgical formula.

‘GAUDETE ET EXSULTATE’ Rejoice and Exult THE GREAT CRITERION

CHAPTER FOUR Signs of Holiness in Today’s World

BOLDNESS AND PASSION

129. Holiness is also parrhesía: it is boldness, an impulse to evangelize and to leave a mark in this world. To allow us to do this, Jesus himself comes and tells us once more, serenely yet firmly: “Do not be afraid” (Mk 6:50). “I am with you always, to the end of the world” (Mt 28:20). These words enable us to go forth and serve with the same courage that the Holy Spirit stirred up in the Apostles, impelling them to proclaim Jesus Christ. Boldness, enthusiasm, the freedom to speak out, apostolic fervour, all these are included in the word parrhesía. The Bible also uses this word to describe the freedom of a life open to God and to others (cf. Acts 4:29, 9:28, 28:31; 2 Cor 3:12; Eph 3:12; Heb 3:6, 10:19).

130. Blessed Paul VI, in referring to obstacles to evangelization, spoke of a lack of fervour (parrhesía) that is “all the more serious because it comes from within”. How often we are tempted to keep close to the shore! Yet the Lord calls us to put out into the deep and let down our nets (cf. Lk 5:4). He bids us spend our lives in his service. Clinging to him, we are inspired to put all our charisms at the service of others. May we always feel compelled by his love (2 Cor 5:14) and say with Saint Paul: “Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel” (1 Cor 9:16).

131. Look at Jesus. His deep compassion reached out to others. It did not make him hesitant, timid or self-conscious, as often happens with us. Quite the opposite. His compassion made him go out actively to preach and to send others on a mission of healing and liberation. Let us acknowledge our weakness, but allow Jesus to lay hold of it and send us too on mission. We are weak, yet we hold a treasure that can enlarge us and make those who receive it better and happier. Boldness and apostolic courage are an essential part of mission.

132. Parrhesía is a seal of the Spirit; it testifies to the authenticity of our preaching. It is a joyful assurance that leads us to glory in the Gospel we proclaim. It is an unshakeable trust in the faithful Witness who gives us the certainty that nothing can “separate us from the love of God” (Rom 8:39).

133. We need the Spirit’s prompting, lest we be paralyzed by fear and excessive caution, lest we grow used to keeping within safe bounds. Let us remember that closed spaces grow musty and unhealthy. When the Apostles were tempted to let themselves be crippled by danger and threats, they joined in prayer to implore parrhesía: “And now, Lord, look upon their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness” (Acts 4:29). As a result, “when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:31).

Care for our Common Home – Sustainable Living

When we look at what is happening in your world and hear people speaking about it, we often hear the word ‘crisis’. The original meaning of the word crisis in Greek does not have the negative connotations it currently has in English and in other modern languages. Originally it meant ‘opportunity’, in the wake of a serious obstacle. To pause, look back and give it a new radically new direction. Only crisis brings real change. The crisis in our natural world, with all its grim prospects, holds a beacon of hope for humanity to rebuild our common planetary home and heal the ruptured bonds of fellowship with every aspect of our earth. Pope Francis says, “as never before in history, common destiny beckons us to seek a new beginning … let ours be a time remembered for the awakening of a new reverence for life, the firm resolve to achieve sustainability, the quickening of the struggle for justice and peace, and the joyful celebration of life.”

A VOCATION VIEW: Through His death, resurrection and ascension, Christ showed us the path to eternal life. Know that the Lord is with you always, through your struggles and triumphs, and that he will hear your

prayers.

KEEP CALM and enjoy the ‘Wind of Change’: draw close to God, be

creative, watch - how people would evolve to learn to live through this

time, coming up creatively with ways to do the things we love doing, as

even church and youth ministry will adopt some changes in the way we

deliver. Follow this page and Unite Sunnybank on Facebook

Send along your lock down stories as text or email (listed on left panel) or Unite Facebook page, so that we can share it with the rest of our Unite community. We are all wired for connection and sharing stories enable that in a very powerful way! Have you picked up a hobby? How's your family time and prayer time? Who are the new guinea pigs you tried your newly developed culinary skills on? How have you virtually hung out with friends and dear ones? Tried any Guinness book records? Scientific inventions (beware

neighbours!) ? Send them through...would be so much fun to share and read!

What’s been zooming this week? Young Adults continued to do scripture reflection earlier in the week via Google Meets (yay it’s free now!) and a Zoom masterclass took place with almost 60 other youth leaders across the archdiocese

(guest speaker from Sydney). It was enriching, inspiring, challenging and ended with adoration.
