Today’s Gospel - Jesus’

story of the workers in the

vineyard, ending with the

line, ‘The last will be first

and the first will be last’ is

very puzzling, until we

recall the audience Jesus

was speaking to (and

Matthew was writing for).

The workers who come to work at dawn are the Jews.

The Jews have been God’s chosen people from the

beginning, down through the whole long, hot and

burdensome ‘day’ of history. The workers who start at

5 pm and work for an hour are the Gentiles - the non-

Jews, people like most of us. God included us at the

last in his chosen people through the work of Jesus,

but we receive the equal ‘pay’ on the last day given to

our elder brothers and sisters, the Jews.

St Matthew’s church - in the city of Antioch in Syria -

was moving from being a mainly Jewish-Christian

congregation to being a Gentile Christian parish. St

Matthew used this story of Jesus to ease the tensions

and hurt feelings, and point out the generosity of

God that is greater than earthly fairness. Fr Paul

Coffee & Donuts Social Time Almost every Sunday, after Mass during the year, members of our parish volunteer their time and talents to keep this activity going. Please call Alex, the coordinator of this activity, so your name can be added to the list of helpers. You may reach Alex at 360-682-5222. We would also like to remind everyone that there is a donation basket on the refreshments table to place your gracious donations in to help defray the cost of this activity.
