A SEASON OF HOPE Today we can bask in the imagery that the Mass readings offer us. In particular, Isaiah’s vision of a parched land that blooms with abundant flowers holds a message for each of us. Too often we are just like that parched land. We can allow ourselves to become absorbed in the waves of consum-erism that grip so many. We look for fulfillment in the things that money can buy. Unfortunately, this leaves us like parched land, thirsting for something that money can’t buy. This holy season has much to offer to quench our thirsts. In a word, this season offers hope. We are told that those who are ransomed by God will know joy and gladness. For them, sorrow and mourning will be no more. Let us place our hope in these promises. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Sunday Collection - Stewardship is based upon an “attitude of gratitude” to God.

Today, the Third Sunday of Advent, we celebrate Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete means “rejoice.” Although Ad-vent is a season of penitence and preparation, today is al-ways set aside by the Church to relax and rejoice in the Lord. All of our readings today deal with Christian joy. This may seem not in keeping with the overall mood en-couraged for Advent, but it is most definitely in keeping with what we need to feel, and it is definitely appropriate for those who embrace stewardship as a way of life. Stewardship is, of course, based upon an “attitude of grati-tude” and today is a day to focus on the joy that results from that gratitude. Father Henri Nouwen was a well known Catholic priest, professor, writer, and theologian. In describing the significance of this particular day, Father Nouwen clarified the difference between joy and happi-ness. He said, “While happiness is dependent upon exter-nal conditions, joy is the experience of knowing that we are unconditionally loved by God and nothing — not sick-ness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death — can take that love away. Joy can be present in the midst of sadness.” Please express your “attitude of gratitude” to God today by financially supporting our historic St. Joseph the Work-er, a parish church offering God’s people beautiful prayer, reconciliation and healing. Colección dominical- la mayordomía se basa en una 'actitud de gratitud' a Dios. Total $ 2,768.34.

Hoy, el Tercer domingo del Advenimiento, celebra-mos el domingo Gaudete. Los medios de Gaudete 'se alegran'. Aunque el Advenimiento sea una temporada de penitencia y preparación, hoy siempre es reservado por la Iglesia para relajarse y alegrarse en el Señor. Todas nues-tras lecturas hoy tratan con la alegría cristiana. Esto puede parecer no de acuerdo con el humor total animado para el Advenimiento, pero es el más definitivamente de acuerdo con lo que tenemos que sentir, y es definitivamente aprop-iado para aquellos que abrazan la mayordomía como un estilo de vida. La mayordomía está, por supuesto, basada sobre “una actitud de la gratitud” y hoy es un día para concentrarse en la alegría que resulta de aquella gratitud. El padre Henri Nouwen fue un sacerdote Católico conocido, profesor, escritor, y teólogo. En la descripción del significado de este día particular, el Padre Nouwen clarificó la diferencia entre alegría y felicidad. Él dijo, “Mientras la felicidad es el dependiente sobre condiciones externas, la alegría es la experiencia de saber que nos aman incondicionalmente por dios y nada — ni la enfermedad, el fracaso, la angustia emocional, la opresión, la guerra, o hasta la muerte — puede llevarse aquel amor. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the ties of affection and authority that bound Europe’s Catholics unraveled in the sixteenth century, many cultures lost time-honored customs of faith. Some customs proved to be especially difficult for the reform-ers to wrest away from the people, especially those celebrated in the home. This week in Sweden, a country where the Catholic Church was disestablished four hundred years ago, a Catholic martyr from Sicily is the most beloved figure. St. Lucia, Lucy, is celebrated on December 13. The long-story-short is that Lucy was a Christian whose father wanted to marry her off to a pagan fellow, and she rejected her father’s authority. To make an example of her, her father had her killed. In the course of the brutal martyrdom, Lucy lost her beautiful eyes, but her vision was miraculously restored. The candles worn today by the eldest daughter of the family are tokens of the fire that refused to harm the saint. So this patroness of light and clear vision is revered on the shortest, darkest days of the Nordic win-ter. Before the reform of the Gregorian calendar in the sixteenth century, December 13 was the winter solstice. Today, young girls appear in the morning wearing lighted candles on their crowned heads (battery-operated now after many mishaps), and serve sweet rolls and coffee to everyone in the house. For the Swedes, who are not churchgoers, the “Lucias” are the official heralds of the holiday season and a sign of everyone’s yearning for more light in this world. Eu-rope once abounded with customs like this; the survival of this custom in Scandinavia is a sign of God’s grace, and how fertile the soil is to receive the true message of Advent. —Rev. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Muchos conocemos la historia de la Virgen de Guadalupe en el Tepeyac, pero ignoramos que en Ex-tremadura, España ya había una imagen de la Virgen con el nombre de Guadalupe. En 1252, la Virgen se le apareció al campesino Gil Cordero pidiéndole que tra-jera a los sacerdotes del pueblo para que escarbaran al lado del Guadalupe (río escondido). Al hacerlo, encon-traron una pequeña estatua morena de la misma Virgen. Esta imagen, según la documentación enterrada con ella, la cual también relata su origen, fue escondida durante el ataque de los moros en el año 711. Había sido un regalo del Papa Gregorio Magno al obispo de Sevilla después de que había resultado mil-agrosa. Su primer milagro fue el salvar al pueblo roma-no de una plaga en el año 591. Cuando la llevaron en procesión alrededor del castillo papal se apareció un arcángel que luego terminó la plaga. Esta misma imagen fue un regalo al Papa Pelagio II traída de Constantinopla donde había sido trasladada con los restos del evangelista san Lucas en el siglo IV.
