THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

The celebration of our Catholic Faith helps us in good times and in bad; in sick-ness and in health! While so many things in our lives change, the one constant is our Faith. Sometimes I feel sad for those who live life without an intentional spir-itual life. Every day we hear about friends, relatives, fellow parishioners, neighbors and co-workers who have had unexpected or unexplained trials or crises

come into their lives which bring them great heartache. We sometimes become overwhelmed ourselves when we hear of these things. Prayer and good works often help us and those who suffer regain some balance at a time when we feel con-fused or uncertain.

I recently came across two quotes that I believe provide some comfort to those who feel alone in their distress. The author, Marge Kennedy (Pets at the White House), writes: “In truth a family is what you make it. It is made strong, not by the number of heads counted at the dinner table, but by the rituals you help family members create, by the memories you share, by the com-mitment of time, caring, and love you show to one another, and by the hopes for the future you have as individuals and as a unit.” The second quote is from the author and journalist, B.C. Forbes (Thoughts on Virtue). He writes: “He who has faith has an inward reservoir of courage, hope, confidence, calmness, and assuring trust that all will come out well---even though to the world it may appear that things will come out most badly.”

When you received Matthew Kelly’s two books, The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic and Rediscover Catholicism: A Spiritual Guide to Living with Passion & Purpose it was and still is my hope and the hope of parish leadership that every parishioner would relish these gifts and absorb their content; to find out what it means to be a Dynamic Catholic and what one needs to think about or do to Rediscover Catholicism in his or her daily life.

In the introduction to Rediscover Catholicism Matthew Kelly writes these words to engage the attention of the reader: “There are many, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, who do not want to rediscover Catholicism. Others think religion, and Catholi-cism in particular, has no place in the modern context. I will admit that Catholicism is old. But let me ask you a question. If you had an ancient treasure map, would you throw it away just because it was old? No. The age of the map doesn’t matter. What matters is whether or not it leads to treasure. Catholicism is a treasure map: It may be old, but it still leads to treasure. Let’s rediscover it together, and help others to do the same.”

Next weekend, we will celebrate the Feast of the Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order at all the parish Masses. A while ago our Servite Vocation Team presented a special Vocation Cross to Father Luke and me. Since the month of February is special to Servites around the world, I thought it would be a good idea to inaugurate a vocation program whereby a different parish family or individual would receive the Vocation Cross at Mass every week and then pray daily for vocations to the

priesthood and religious life especially in the Servite Order. The cross and prayer leaflets will be presented to the family in much the same way Mary’s Journey is presented. As soon as we work out the details, I’ll let you know so that you will hopefully come forward to participate.

The main source of our knowledge about the Seven Holy Found-ers is a document called the Legenda written about 1317. We also have a series of legal documents, papal and episcopal letters starting from 1249 in the Order archives in Rome. The traditional names of the Founders are Bonfilius, Manettus, Alexis, Hugh, Sostene, Amadeus, Bonajuncta. We know little about the Seven individually. Documents show that Bonfilius was the leader of the group from 1250-1255. The Legenda sketches a picture of Alexis in his later years and records that he died in 1310 at an advanced age.

The following characteristics of the life of the Founders are gleaned from various sources and official records: 1) A life of penance, poverty and prayer, expressed in their life, in their clothing they wore, and the poverty of their dwellings (remember these men were wealthy cloth merchants in Florence and gave it all away); 2) Their great love of the poor and the sick of every kind. A love for each other that became a deep friendship, shar-ing ideals, decisions and support; 3) Service of the Virgin Mary. Mary was recognized as a way to Christ, a model of the life of the Gospel and a servant of the sick. In later years they dedicat-ed their churches to her and honored her in liturgical services as well as daily prayer; 4) They gave public witness to Gospel val-ues carried out in the growing urban centers in Italy and beyond in times of political dissension and division.

Much more can be said about the beginnings of the Servite Order and the life of the Seven Holy Founders. These few remarks will give you a taste of our origin and the uniqueness of the Order founded not by one charismatic leader but by a group….unique in the history of the Church and Religious Life.

The parish school has formed a committee to research the possi-bility of adding a Transitional Kindergarten. Parishioner and school board member Jenni Minardi may be contacting young families in our community to begin asking questions about the interest in having a pre-school or Transitional Kindergarten at St. Juliana. If you are contacted, please give Jenni your honest opin-ion. If you have an interest in this program or would like to con-tact the school for more information call (714)-879-1965.

I thought you might like this closing tidbit. It’s for all the folks who pine for the days of railroading (I include myself). In the year 1910, over 971 million passengers rode the rails in coach cars and sleepers. The popularity of rail travel peaked in 1920 at over 1.2 billion passengers, but began a steady decline from that year forward. Amtrak reported that over 24.3 million passengers traveled on trains from October 2005-September 2006 about 2 percent of the total passengers in 1910. Let’s support railroading!

In the Joy of Our Faith, Fr. Frank Falco, O.S.M. Pastor.

PATHWAY TO HOPE’S “THE PAW PROGRAM”

Our For Christ Forever Campaign Committee would like to thank all the families and individuals who have contributed so far and have made the diocesan campaign a great success. We have received $894,892 in pledges from 309 parish individuals and families. Currently, we are at 66% of goal from only 19% of our parish. Ince we have surpassed our 2013 PSA goal in cash, we will now receive 25% of all monies collected up to our campaign target of $1,287,473. Our rebate will be used to pay down the Parish Center loan that currently stands at under $800,000 and make some roof repairs to the Church and rectory.

THE FIRST REBATE THAT ST. JULIANA FALCONIERI RECEIVES SHOULD BE CLOSE TO $50,000. Thank you to everyone that made this possible!

NOTE: Pledge and Gift totals are as of 2/4/2014.

We will list our Christ Forever Campaign donors in a future volume of the newsletter. If you would like to remain anonymous, please contact the Parish Office this week at 714-879-1965.

DIOCESAN INFO: As of January 8th, the Orange Catholic Federation reports receipt of $80,025,873.27
