    Companion Saints

Parish of the Precious Blood has been doing a New Year’s tradition

to choose a new Patron Saint for each family member each year. In

the past, we pulled the name of a Saint from a basket. With COVID,

we are changing it up to ensure everyone’s safety.

From the list provided, choose a saint that you feel would be a good

fit for you– something relative to you.

Here are some ideas for celebrating the yearly patron saint or you

can make it a family affair:

Put a statue of that saint in your home.

Give your children holy cards or inexpensive saint medals of the saint.

Learn about your saint over the year.

    Celebrate your saint’s feast day.

Do a quick google search to see if your saint has a prayer you can say together on New Year’s day or throughout the year,

and put up somewhere in your home. Include this prayer in your

bedtime prayer routine for the year.

Make crafts and do activities with your children relating to their saint and his or her patronage.

Good luck in selecting a Saint that you can rely on for the year 2021.

St. Michael the Archangel - Patron Saint of Police Officers.

While there are countless angels, Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael are the

only angels referred to by name in the Bible. These angels were each

entrusted with extraordinary missions and played a specific role in how

our salvation would play out. St. Michael, also known as an archangel

(an elevated angel), is called “Prince of the Heavenly Host,” and is

considered the leader of the angels. As a police officer's role is to

protect the public from the activities incited by the devil it is absolutely

natural that Saint Michael is the Patron Saint.

Saint Florian - Patron Saint of Firefighters.

St. Florian—an officer in the Roman army who died protecting his

faith—is without a doubt reaping his reward in heaven as promised by

God. Put to death for refusing to kill Christians as ordered by Emperor

Diocletian, St. Florian is the man who has been given the title of patron

    saint of firefighters and floods.

St. Lawrence - Patron Saints of the Culinary Arts.

If every steak on the grill could be as considerate as St. Lawrence,

there’d be less overcooked meat in the world. As he lay on a gridiron set

over coals to be roasted to death, this early Christian martyr allegedly

told his executioners, “Turn me over, I’m done on this side.”

Mary Magdalene - Patron Saint of Hairdressers.

Mary Magdalene is often identified as the sinful penitent woman in Luke

7:37-38 who wiped Jesus' feet with her hair. That's why she's the patron

of penitents and perfumes; but also why she might have been the

    patron saint of hairdressers.

Saint Raphael the Archangel - the Patron Saint of Healing.

Unlike most saints, Raphael was never a human being who lived on

Earth. Instead, he has always been a heavenly angel. He was declared

a saint in honor of his work helping humanity. As one of God's leading

archangels, Raphael serves people who need to heal in body, mind,

and spirit. Raphael also helps people in health professions, such as

doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and counselors. He is also a patron saint

of young people, love, travelers, and people seeking protection from

nightmares. Healing People Physically. People often pray for

Raphael's help in healing their bodies from illnesses and injuries.

Raphael clears away toxic spiritual energy that has harmed people's

physical health, promoting good health in every area of the body.

Healing People Mentally and Emotionally. Raphael also heals people's

minds and emotions by working with God's Spirit to help change

people's thoughts and feelings. Believers often pray for help from

Raphael to recover from mental and emotional suffering.

St. Catherine of Alexandria (c. 287-305) – Patron Saint of Teachers

    and Students.

Today, she is known as the namesake of a monastery at Mount Sinai

that claims to be the oldest in the world. She is the patron saint of

wheelwrights, and also a patron saint of teachers, jurists, philosophers,

    students and teachers.

St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) – Patron Saint of Teachers.

St. Thomas is a patron saint of academics, chastity, colleges and

    universities, Catholic schools and theologians.

St. Christopher – Patron Saint of Drivers.

St. Christopher is the patron saint of all travelers and transportation

workers, including mariners, bus drivers and taxi drivers, as well as

bachelors, fruit dealers and epileptics -- a busy man, this guy!

St. Isidore – Patron Saint of Farmers.

St. Isidore the Farmer, was a Spanish farmworker known for his piety

toward the poor and animals. He is the Catholic patron saint of farmers

and of Madrid, and of La Ceiba, Honduras. His feast day is celebrated

    on May 15.

    MORE SAINTS NEXT WEEK!

St. Agatha - Patron Saint of Wet Nurses and Breast Cancer.

St. Agatha was born around 231 A.D. in Sicily to rich noble parents. She is

the patron saint of wet nurses and breast cancer because of her story of

torture where her breasts were torn off and miraculously healed.

St. Agatha was born with beauty and vowed to remain celibate and sexually

pure, devoting her life to God and prayer. A judge named Quintianus wanted

her for himself and tried to force her to marry him through imprisonment and

torture. She never lost her faith or dedication, even when he ordered her

breasts to be removed. While in prison, she had a vision of St. Peter the

Apostle who healed her wounds. She eventually passed away – a virgin – in

251.t. Agatha of Sicily – Patron Saint of Wet Nurses & Breast Cancer

St Luke - Patron Saint of Doctors.

Unfortunately, we know little of the life of Saint Luke (the Evangelist) although

we are able to benefit a great deal from his writings (i.e. his Gospel and the

Acts of the Apostles). It is believed that he is “the beloved physician” from

Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians, and, as a result, he is the patron of

physicians and surgeons. It is thought that Saint Luke was born in Antioch,

Syria and that he lived a long life, dying at the ripe old age of 84 in Boeotia,

Greece (believed to be where he chose to settle so as to write his Gospel).

However, there are other accounts claiming he was martyred.

St. Denis – Patron Saint of Intercessions.

St. Denis was born and raised in Italy. He was sent as a missionary to Gaul

(now France). He became know as the First Bishop of Paris and Apostle of

France. He suffered martyrdom and was beheaded.

St. John Vianney – Patron Saint of Parish Priests.

French priest who was renowned as a confessor and for his supernatural

powers. He was devoted to the sacrament of reconciliation and was known to

spend up to 15 hours a day hearing confessions. He is the patron saint of

parish priests. Learn more about his life and ministry.

St. Mark – Patron Saint Mark the Evangelist.

Author of the Gospel Book of Mark in the Bible, was one of Jesus Christ's

original 12 disciples. He is the patron saint of many different topics: including

lions, lawyers, notaries, opticians, pharmacists, painters, secretaries,

interpreters, prisoners, and people dealing with insect bites. He lived in the

Middle East during the 1st century, and his feast day is celebrated on April

    25th.

St. Joseph – Patron Saint of Workers, Fathers, travelers, and unborn

children. Saint Joseph is the patron saint of workers, fathers, travelers,

unborn children, immigrants and dying a happy death. He was the stepfather

of Jesus and husband of Mary. Saint Joseph was born in 90 B.C. and died in

the year 18 A.D. Much of Saint Joseph's life comes from the Bible. He was a

carpenter who accepted that Jesus was the Son of God but treated him as

his own son. He moved his family to Nazareth to protect them.

St. Theresa of Lisieux – Patron Saint of Sick People, Florists, Aviators,

and Tuberculosis. Saint Therese of Lisieux is the patron of sick people,

florists, aviators, tuberculosis, and foreign missions. She was born in France.

She received a vision of the Child Jesus just before her 14th birthday which

developed in her an incredible faith. St. Therese of Lisieux, also known as the

Little Flower, struggled with tuberculosis throughout her twenties.

St Louis – Patron Saint of Secular Franciscans, Hairdressers and Arts

and Architecture. During his reign, the famous Sorbonne Theological

School was formed in Paris and the gothic jewel, the Sainte Chapelle in

Paris, was built as his personal chapel. In the Sainte Chapelle, he enshrined

the true Crown of Thorns which he had secured from the Emperor in

Constantinople. He’s the patron saint of the Secular Franciscans.

Interestingly, he was a contemporary of St. Francis of Assisi. Louis is also the

    patron of hairdressers.

St. Lucy – Patron Saint of Eye Problems.

St. Lucy is most notably the patron saint of the blind, eye disorders, virgins,

the poor, and the city of her birth, Syracuse, Sicily. “Lucy” means “light” or

“lucid.” St. Lucy, a martyr who inspired classic literature and Renaissance

painters, and is a model for virtuous men and women everywhere. Saint

Lucy is an example of a woman so strong in her faith that she pulled her own

eyes out before she was martyred.
